Rebirth 1991: Keep the Fame, I'll Take the Royalties

The PPV Concert Hack

July in the Mojave Desert was not a season; it was an act of geological violence.

The heat radiating off the Las Vegas asphalt was so intense it visibly warped the horizon, creating shimmering mirages over the endless, sprawling concrete. Inside the rusted, failing cabin of the 1984 Honda Civic, the atmosphere was akin to a slow-roasting oven.

Paul Rudd had his face pressed directly against the passenger-side air vent, which was currently blowing a weak stream of hot, dust-scented air. He was drenched in sweat, his flannel shirt clinging to his skin like a wet napkin.

”Elias,” Paul gasped, his voice raspy and desperate. ”We are driving through the literal gates of hell in a car that doesn’t have air conditioning. We have nearly four hundred thousand dollars in the bank! I checked the ledger myself! We could have flown! We could be sipping iced cocktails in a penthouse suite at the Mirage!”

Elias van Kempen steered the rattling hatchback off the main Las Vegas Strip, bypassing the glittering mega-casinos and turning onto a sun-baked, desolate side street. He wore his vintage leather jacket with the impeccable, unbothered posture of a European royal. He wasn’t sweating. His capitalist willpower actively suppressed his biological need to perspire.

”A penthouse suite at the Mirage costs a minimum of four hundred dollars a night, Paul,” Elias stated smoothly, his baritone voice a dark, cool contrast to the blistering heat. ”It is a vanity tax imposed upon tourists who mistake proximity to slot machines for actual prestige. We are here to conduct a hostile corporate extraction, not to subsidize Steve Wynn’s electrical bill.”

Elias pulled the Civic into the cracked parking lot of a single-story, peeling stucco motel. The neon sign out front was buzzing aggressively, missing half its letters so it simply read: ’ OTEL’. It looked like a location scout’s dream for a low-budget crime documentary.

”Forty dollars a night,” Elias announced with a deeply satisfied, utterly shameless smile, cutting the engine. ”Paid in advance. I have successfully preserved three hundred and sixty dollars in operational liquidity. Grab your briefcase, Executive Assistant.”

Paul looked at the motel, letting out a tragic, broken whimper. ”I am going to contract a desert parasite. I am going to die in a room with a vibrating bed.”

As Elias stepped out of the vehicle into the suffocating Nevada heat, the digital loan shark inside his cerebral cortex chimed in, entirely unsympathetic to his frugality.

[CHA-CHING!][SYSTEM WARNING: DAILY MAINTENANCE FEE DEDUCTION INITIATED.][DEDUCTING -$50.00 USD FROM LIQUID CASH RESERVE.]

Elias felt the familiar, phantom sting in his chest. The forty-dollar motel fee and the fifty-dollar daily tax dropped his liquid cash to exactly $395,950.00. His Shameless Points (CP) were resting at a precarious 10. He was hovering just above the poverty line of the system’s aesthetic defense mechanisms.

”The ledger is bleeding, Paul,” Elias murmured, turning his gaze toward the towering, emerald-green monolith of the MGM Grand looming in the distance. ”It is time to tap a new artery.”

Thirty minutes later, Elias and Paul walked into the chaotic, overwhelming sensory explosion of the MGM Grand casino floor. The air was frigid, thick with the smell of ozone, cigarette smoke, and thousands of desperate gamblers feeding tokens into ringing slot machines.

Elias didn’t glance at the blackjack tables. He didn’t look at the roulette wheels. He bypassed the entire floor of manufactured luck, heading directly toward the private, gold-plated elevator banks reserved for high-stakes whales and executive management.

”Elias, wait,” Paul hissed, scurrying behind him, clutching a leather portfolio. ”We don’t have an appointment! Don King is up there! He travels with an army of bodyguards! He’s promoting the Evander Holyfield fight! The man is a titan, Elias. We can’t just walk into his penthouse and ask for a favor!”

”I never ask for favors, Paul. I create dependencies,” Elias smiled, a dark, incredibly charismatic expression.

He didn’t bribe the security guard at the golden elevator. He simply walked past him, projecting the suffocating, heavy gravity of a billionaire owner who was deeply annoyed that he even had to share oxygen with the staff. The guard, overwhelmed by the sheer, unadulterated entitlement radiating from the teenager, instinctively stepped aside.

The elevator shot up to the penthouse level.

They stepped out into a sprawling, opulent suite that smelled strongly of expensive cigars, catered steak, and sweat.

The living room was packed with people. Trainers, sycophants, lower-level promoters, and massive, intimidating bodyguards milled about. In the center of the room, sitting behind a massive glass desk, shouting into a telephone while simultaneously eating a shrimp cocktail, was the unmistakable figure of Don King.

With his iconic, gravity-defying hair, a denim jacket covered in rhinestones, and a diamond-encrusted pendant resting on his chest, Don King was the absolute, chaotic ringmaster of 1990s professional boxing.

”I don’t care what the venue says! I want more seats in the floor section!” King bellowed into the phone, slamming his fist onto the glass desk. ”You tell them Don King brings the spectacle! I bring the thunder! You squeeze another two hundred chairs in there or I pull the fight!”

He slammed the phone down, laughing a booming, thunderous laugh that echoed through the penthouse.

Elias van Kempen didn’t wait to be announced. He glided through the crowd of sycophants, moving with a silent, predatory grace that parted the room like the Red Sea. He stopped directly in front of the glass desk.

”You are focusing on seating capacity when the true capitalization lies in the broadcast frequency, Don,” Elias said smoothly, his baritone voice a lethal, elegant contrast to the promoter’s booming volume.

Don King stopped chewing. He looked up, his eyes narrowing as he took in the striking, incredibly handsome teenager in the vintage leather jacket. He looked at Paul Rudd, who was sweating profusely and trying to look invisible behind his Anti-Awkwardness Sunglasses.

”Who the hell are you?” King boomed, his voice a gravelly roar. He looked at his bodyguards. ”How did this kid get past the lobby? Are you selling magazines, son? Because Don King only buys the cover!”

The sycophants in the room chuckled loudly, eager to please the boss.

Elias didn’t blush. He didn’t raise his voice. He offered a slow, utterly shameless smile that radiated pure, corporate danger.

”I am Elias van Kempen. Managing Partner of Sovereign Media,” Elias introduced himself, placing both hands flat on the glass desk. ”And I am here to elevate your Pay-Per-View broadcast from a mere athletic exhibition into a global, culturally defining stadium concert.”

Don King let out a massive, rumbling laugh. He waved a dismissive hand. ”A concert? Kid, I’m promoting the heavyweight championship of the world! I don’t need a halftime show! I sell blood! I sell drama!”

”You sell primitive violence,” Elias corrected flawlessly, unbothered by the loud promoter. ”But your broadcast lacks an emotional hook. When your fighters walk down the aisle, the arena plays generic, royalty-free instrumental noise. It is a catastrophic waste of tension.”

Elias signaled Paul. Paul, hands trembling, opened his portfolio and pulled out a cassette tape. It wasn’t ”Creep.” It was a brand-new master Elias had produced, hijacking a heavy, iconic bassline from the future.

”This is ’Seven Nation Army’,” Elias lied seamlessly, branding the future masterpiece under the Sovereign Media umbrella. ”It possesses a specific, relentless acoustic frequency designed to trigger mass crowd participation. When your fighter walks out to this track, the entire MGM Grand will chant the bassline in unison. It will translate through the Pay-Per-View broadcast like an earthquake. You won’t just be selling a fight, Don. You will be selling an anthem.”

Don King stared at the cassette tape on the desk. He was a master of spectacle, and Elias’s pitch had hit every single buzzword his promoter’s brain craved. An anthem. Crowd participation.

A shrewd, greedy grin split King’s face.

”Only in America, kid!” King bellowed, leaning back in his plush leather chair, spreading his arms wide. ”Only in America! You think you can walk into my arena and play your song for free? You want to piggyback on my millions of Pay-Per-View buyers to sell your little cassette tape? I respect the hustle, boy. I really do.”

King leaned forward, his grin turning malicious.

”Pay me a hundred thousand dollars,” King demanded, jabbing a thick finger at Elias. ”A hundred grand, cash, right now. Or go back to singing in malls. Don King’s stage ain’t a charity!”

Paul Rudd let out a high-pitched, suffocated squeak. A hundred thousand dollars? They didn’t have it to spare, and even if they did, Elias would rather chew glass than pay a toll to a promoter.

Elias didn’t flinch. He didn’t break eye contact with the legendary titan of boxing. He needed leverage, and he needed it instantly. His eyes flicked down to the glass desk, scanning the chaotic pile of manifests, ticket sales projections, and handwritten ledgers King had been reviewing.

He had to pull the trigger.

The moment he initiated the purchase, an apocalyptic siren detonated inside his skull.

[CHA-CHING!][CRITICAL ALERT! CRITICAL ALERT!][SHAMELESS POINTS (CP) AT 0.][WARNING: AESTHETIC SABOTAGE PROTOCOL ARMED. SITCOM PENALTY WILL INITIATE UPON ANY FAILED NEGOTIATION TACTIC. YOUR DIGNITY IS NO LONGER INSURED.]

Elias’s jaw locked. His heart rate spiked, but his face remained a flawless mask of aristocratic ice. The system was threatening to ruin him right here in the penthouse, but he couldn’t afford to hesitate.

The translucent, red-tinted grid snapped over his vision. It sliced through the stacks of paper on King’s desk, bypassing the public relations documents and highlighting the handwritten, private ledger books buried underneath.

The neon-red text scrolled furiously.

[SCAN COMPLETE. Elias’s dark eyes gleamed with pure, unfiltered capitalist joy. The X-Ray faded, but the bullet was chambered.

Elias didn’t step back. He didn’t flinch. He unleashed a smile so deeply shameless, so utterly predatory, that the sycophants standing behind Don King instinctively stopped laughing.

”Hanya di Amerika, Don,” Elias murmured, smoothly leaning his weight against the glass desk, towering over the seated promoter. (Only in America, Don,) ”Seorang promotor bisa memotong dua puluh persen dari hak siar internasional petinjunya sendiri tanpa mencatatnya di komisi atletik Nevada.” (Can a promoter skim twenty percent of his own fighter’s international broadcast rights without logging it with the Nevada Athletic Commission.)

The silence in the penthouse fell like a guillotine.

Don King froze. The cigar practically slipped from his fingers.

Elias didn’t stop. He leaned in closer, dropping his baritone voice into a silken, lethal whisper that ensured only King could hear the full extent of his financial autopsy.

”A Panamanian shell corporation is a beautiful logistical maneuver,” Elias praised mockingly, his eyes unblinking. ”But when you hide twenty percent of Evander Holyfield’s overseas gate receipts in it, it ceases to be clever tax avoidance. It becomes a federal wire fraud indictment.”

A massive, highly visible, cartoonish sweatdrop materialized on Don King’s forehead. The color drained from his famously expressive face, leaving him looking sickly and gray.

The kid didn’t just have a hunch. He had the exact percentages. He had the offshore location.

”You... you’re bluffing, kid,” King choked out, his booming voice reduced to a hoarse, terrified rasp. He slammed his hand over the stack of ledgers on his desk, as if trying to physically shield the numbers from Elias’s gaze. ”You ain’t got no proof.”

”Beri aku slot walkout itu secara gratis,” Elias commanded seamlessly, ignoring the weak denial, completely dominating the space. (Give me that walkout slot for free,) ”Dan tanda tangani dokumen Sync Licensing ini.” (And sign this Sync Licensing document.)

Elias snapped his fingers. Paul, moving on pure terrified instinct, practically threw the Sovereign Media licensing contract onto the glass desk.

”Jika tidak,” Elias smiled gently, the threat ringing with absolute, verified destruction. (Otherwise,) ”Aku akan menyerahkan buku besarmu kepada pengacara petinjumu, dan kau akan menghabiskan sisa hidupmu di pengadilan.” (I will hand your ledger over to your fighter’s lawyers, and you will spend the rest of your life in court.)

Don King stared at the contract. He stared at the terrifying, beautiful teenager standing in front of him.

The promoter had spent his entire life manipulating fighters, extorting casinos, and bullying networks. He was the undisputed king of the hustle. But right now, he was looking at an evolutionary leap in capitalist sociopathy. The kid hadn’t just beaten him; he had x-rayed his soul.

If Holyfield’s lawyers saw those numbers, King’s empire wouldn’t just crumble; he would go to federal prison.

With a deep, tragic groan of a man utterly defeated by a superior predator, Don King grabbed a heavy gold pen from his desk. His hands were shaking violently as he scrawled his signature across the bottom of the Sync Licensing agreement.

”Take it,” King hissed, shoving the contract toward Elias, his ego entirely shattered. ”You get the walkout. Free. Just... keep your mouth shut about Panama.”

”A pleasure doing business with you, Don,” Elias murmured politely. He snatched the contract with fluid grace, securing the paper in his inner jacket pocket.

He had done it. He had hijacked the biggest sporting event of the year. When the heavyweight champion of the world walked out to the ring next month, millions of Pay-Per-View buyers across the globe would be indoctrinated by the heavy, thumping bassline of a Sovereign Media track. The ensuing physical single sales would be astronomical.

Elias turned on his heel and glided toward the golden elevator, parting the sea of stunned bodyguards with effortless, aristocratic arrogance.

Paul Rudd scrambled after him, looking like he was about to burst into tears of pure adrenaline.

As the elevator doors slid shut, sealing them in gilded privacy, Paul collapsed against the mirrored wall, clutching his chest.

”Elias,” Paul wheezed, his eyes wide behind his crooked sunglasses. ”You just blackmailed Don King. You literally just blackmailed the most dangerous man in sports. I thought we were dead. I thought he was going to have us buried in the desert.”

”Don King is a businessman, Paul. He understands leverage,” Elias said smoothly, checking his cuffs.

But Elias’s victory was cut brutally short by the screaming, flashing red alarms detonating in his neural pathways.

Elias’s jaw locked. His heart rate spiked. He had secured the contract, but his digital bank account was utterly bankrupt. He was walking through a Las Vegas casino with 0 CP. It was the equivalent of walking through a war zone without body armor.

”We need to return to the motel immediately,” Elias stated, his voice tight. ”The operational environment is currently too hostile.”

”The motel?” Paul groaned. ”Elias, we just conquered the MGM Grand! We have to celebrate!”

”There is no celebration, Paul. Only survival,” Elias muttered, staring at the flashing zeros in his vision.

The Phantom Agency had secured its fourth pillar, but its Managing Partner was currently one step away from growing a third eye. The hunt for points had to resume immediately.
