Rebirth 1991: Keep the Fame, I'll Take the Royalties

The Harem Catfight Arbitrage

Late May of 1992 draped the sprawling metropolis of Los Angeles in a warm, electric twilight. The city was gearing up for the pre-summer gala season, a time when the invisible hierarchies of Hollywood were brutally enforced on fifty yards of red carpet.

Inside the aggressively air-conditioned cabin of a rented Lincoln Town Car, Elias van Kempen was attempting to calculate the depreciation rate of the vehicle’s leather upholstery.

”I still do not understand why we could not simply utilize the Honda Civic, Paul,” Elias murmured, his baritone voice a smooth, velvet hum of pure financial annoyance. He adjusted the cuffs of his flawlessly tailored, midnight-blue Armani tuxedo—a garment he fully intended to return the next morning with the tags carefully hidden. ”This luxury sedan cost two hundred and fifty dollars for the evening. I am functionally subsidizing the chauffeur’s mortgage.”

Sitting across from him, Paul Rudd was clutching a massive, brick-like Motorola cellular phone, looking dangerously close to cardiac arrest. He was wearing a rented tuxedo that was marginally too large in the shoulders.

”Elias, we are attending a major pre-summer Hollywood Charity Gala. We are representing the reigning It-Girl of the film industry and the highest-paid supermodel on the planet,” Paul wheezed, wiping a layer of cold sweat from his forehead. ”If you drop them off at the red carpet in a backfiring, rusted hatchback that smells like a wet dog, Creative Artists Agency will have us arrested for gross negligence!”

”Perception is a highly manipulatable commodity, Paul,” Elias countered, checking his Rolex Daytona. ”A billionaire in a rusted car is viewed as eccentric. A poor man in a limousine is viewed as a fraud. We are currently trapped in the expensive middle ground.”

Before Elias could further dismantle the economics of luxury transportation, the massive brick phone in Paul’s hands rang with a harsh, electronic chirp.

Paul fumbled with the device, nearly dropping it on the floor mat before pressing it to his ear. ”Sovereign Media, Executive Assistant Paul speaking.”

A pause. Paul’s face drained of all color, transforming into a mask of pure, unadulterated horror.

”What do you mean there was a manifest leak?” Paul shrieked into the receiver. ”How is that even mathematically possible?! We booked the showroom three weeks ago!”

Elias’s dark, predatory eyes shifted from the window to his assistant. ”Put it on speaker, Paul.”

Paul frantically pressed a sequence of rubbery buttons. The fiery, distinctively South African accent of Charlize Theron crackled through the static-filled speaker.

”Elias, your little empire is about to spontaneously combust,” Charlize announced, her voice dripping with the specific kind of exasperation reserved for managing lunatics. She was currently at the Sovereign Media headquarters, acting as the de facto intelligence hub. ”I just got off the phone with my contact at the Versace showroom. Michael Ovitz’s assistant at CAA somehow got a look at our wardrobe pulls. They executed a targeted sabotage.”

”Specify the liability, Charlize,” Elias commanded, his tone dropping an octave into absolute, clinical detachment.

”Cindy Crawford and Winona Ryder are both scheduled to walk the red carpet in exactly four minutes,” Charlize explained, her voice tightening. ”And thanks to CAA switching the garment bags at the hotel... they are both wearing the exact same dress. The black Versace Fall/Winter gown with the plunging neckline and the gold safety-pin accents. It’s a total collision.”

Paul let out a high-pitched whimper, burying his face in his hands. ”We are dead. We are so completely dead. The paparazzi are going to slaughter us. The ’Who Wore It Better’ headlines will destroy their brand equity! They’re going to kill each other right there on the carpet!”

”They will not kill each other, Paul. Murder is terrible for corporate PR,” Elias said smoothly, though his mind was instantly calculating the sheer, catastrophic magnitude of the crisis.

Having two apex predators from two different cultural factions—The Runway Mafia and The Hollywood Royalty—clash on a red carpet was not just an embarrassment. It was a declaration of war. If the media framed Sovereign Media as a sloppy, amateur agency that couldn’t even manage brand exclusivity, Ovitz would use the narrative to poach Winona back by morning.

”Charlize. Monitor the wire services. Do not engage with any press inquiries until I dictate the official narrative,” Elias ordered, his mind racing.

”Good luck, Boss,” Charlize replied dryly. ”Try not to bleed on the Armani.”

The phone clicked dead.

The limousine slowed to a halt, merging into the glittering, chaotic queue of vehicles dropping off the Hollywood elite outside the grand venue. The red carpet was a sea of flashing strobes, screaming photographers, and velvet ropes.

”Elias,” Paul panicked, grabbing his boss’s sleeve. ”We have to intercept them! We have to turn one of their cars around!”

”We cannot recall an asset once it is in the public domain, Paul. That implies weakness,” Elias stated, his dark eyes narrowing into terrifying slits of pure, sociopathic resolve. ”We are not retreating. We are going to execute a market correction.”

Elias didn’t wait for the chauffeur. He kicked his door open and stepped out into the humid Los Angeles night, instantly bathed in a blinding barrage of flashbulbs. He ignored the screaming reporters, his gaze sweeping the chaotic drop-off zone.

He found them instantly.

To the left, stepping out of a sleek black town car, was Cindy Crawford. She was the absolute manifestation of 1990s supermodel supremacy. Tall, impossibly glamorous, and radiating an aura of lethal confidence.

To the right, emerging from a classic Rolls Royce, was Winona Ryder. She possessed the fierce, ethereal, effortlessly cool aesthetic of a generation’s ultimate muse.

And they were both wearing the exact, identical, highly distinctive black Versace gown.

The moment they stepped onto the carpet, the atmosphere shifted. The ambient noise of the crowd seemed to vanish, replaced by the deafening, frantic clicking of five hundred camera shutters. The paparazzi had instantly realized the catastrophic wardrobe malfunction. This was the holy grail of tabloid journalism.

Cindy and Winona froze. Their eyes met across twenty yards of red carpet.

The temperature plummeted. The Runway Mafia and the Hollywood Royalty were officially at war.

Instead of turning away in embarrassment, both women—fueled by massive, world-class egos and the fierce competitive instincts that had driven them to the top of their respective industries—squared their shoulders and began walking directly toward each other.

Elias watched the collision course with clinical horror. He mentally engaged the digital loan shark. He needed an illusion. He needed a smoke screen.

Elias’s jaw locked. The system was entirely useless. He was going to have to do this the hard, analog way. He was going to have to sacrifice his own liquidity.

He didn’t run. He moved with the terrifying, fluid speed of a predator breaking from the shadows. As he passed a stationary waiter holding a tray of drinks for the VIP arrivals, Elias smoothly snatched a crystal goblet filled to the brim with dark, heavy Cabernet Sauvignon.

He breached the center of the red carpet exactly as Cindy and Winona came face to face. The cameras were practically exploding around them.

”It appears Sovereign Media failed to secure brand exclusivity,” Cindy sneered, her voice a low, elegant purr that masked a lethal edge. She tilted her head, looking Winona up and down with absolute, withering supermodel disdain. ”I feel like I’m looking in a mirror with an indie actress.”

Winona didn’t flinch. Her dark eyes flashed with brilliant, Gen-X rebellion.

”Better an indie actress than a walking clothes hanger,” Winona fired back, her tone sharp enough to cut diamonds.

Before the verbal spar could escalate into a highly publicized, brand-destroying physical altercation, a tall, midnight-blue blur stepped directly between them.

Elias van Kempen didn’t shout. He didn’t try to pull them apart.

With a movement of profound, calculated theatricality, Elias violently jerked his own wrist. The entire goblet of dark red Cabernet splashed directly onto his own chest, instantly staining the pristine white silk of his tuxedo shirt with a massive, jagged, bloody-looking crimson mark.

Both women gasped, taking a synchronized step back as the wine splashed onto the carpet. The paparazzi screamed in absolute, bewildered frenzy.

Elias didn’t stop. He dropped to one knee with the grace of a knight, his dark, mesmerizing eyes locking onto Winona. Before she could process the sheer absurdity of the situation, Elias’s long, elegant fingers gripped the delicate, high-tension seam near the thigh-high slit of her Versace gown.

With a sharp, violent, and entirely shameless yank, Elias ripped the fabric.

Riiiip!

The sound tore through the flashing strobes. The bottom tier of Winona’s dress tore away entirely on the left side, transforming the elegant, floor-length gown into a fierce, asymmetrical, jaggedly cut punk-rock masterpiece. It completely severed the visual identicality between the two women.

Elias stood up slowly, the ruined crystal goblet still dangling from his fingertips. His white shirt was a disaster. Winona’s dress was fundamentally altered. Cindy’s gown remained pristine.

He turned to face the wall of screaming, flashing cameras, placing one arm around Cindy’s waist and the other around Winona’s, physically binding the two warring factions to his sides.

He engaged the system one final time. It was a microscopic investment for a macroscopic return.

[CHA-CHING!]

Elias let out a rich, dark, overwhelmingly charismatic laugh that resonated over the noise of the press. It was a laugh that projected total control, brilliant eccentricity, and absolute superiority.

”You are both wrong,” Elias dictated, his baritone voice a smooth, velvet hammer that commanded absolute silence from the press line. He looked at Cindy, then at Winona, and finally directly into the primary television camera.

He unleashed a smile so deeply shameless it bordered on the divine.

”This is not an oversight. This is the Sovereign Media Duality Statement,” Elias announced flawlessly, inventing a multi-million-dollar marketing campaign out of thin air. ”You are monopolizing the camera lenses by presenting the cultural shift of this decade. From the pristine, untouchable perfection of the 1980s...” He gestured gracefully to Cindy’s flawless gown. ”...to the raw, asymmetrical, unapologetic rebellion of the 1990s.” He gestured to Winona’s jagged, torn hemline and his own wine-stained shirt.

The silence on the red carpet was thick, heavy, and pregnant with realization.

The fashion journalists, desperately eager to find profound meaning in celebrity chaos, instantly bought the narrative. They didn’t see a wardrobe malfunction. They saw a brilliant, avant-garde performance art piece orchestrated by the most mysterious, dangerously charismatic talent manager in Hollywood.

”It’s a statement on the death of generic glamour!” a reporter from Vogue screamed, frantically scribbling in a notepad.

The flashbulbs erupted with twice the intensity.

”Now,” Elias whispered, his voice dropping so only his two clients could hear him. His tone was suddenly devoid of all warmth, replaced by the chilling, sociopathic reality of an accountant viewing a damaged ledger. ”Smile for the cameras. Play the parts I just handed you. Because the moment we are out of sight, I am billing both of your accounts for my ruined silk shirt.”

Cindy and Winona, completely overwhelmed by the sheer, staggering intellect and the terrifyingly smooth execution of the man standing between them, obeyed. They posed, they smiled, and they owned the carpet, their previous animosity buried under the brilliant illusion of a collaborative masterpiece.

As they finally escaped the flashing strobes and stepped into the dim, opulent VIP lounge of the gala venue, the illusion shattered.

Elias immediately let go of their waists, pulling a white linen handkerchief from his pocket and dabbing at his wine-soaked chest with a look of profound, aristocratic disgust.

Paul Rudd came sprinting into the room, practically sliding across the marble floor. ”Elias! You’re a genius! The press is eating it up! They’re calling it the ’Dress of the Decade’! You saved the agency!”

”I did not save the agency, Paul. I engaged in high-risk damage control because my assets failed to verify their logistical supply chains,” Elias stated coldly, turning his dark eyes onto his two superstars.

Cindy crossed her arms, though the haughty supermodel sneer had vanished, replaced by a begrudging, undeniable respect. Winona looked down at her torn dress, running a hand over the jagged edge, genuinely impressed by the aesthetic.

”You ruined a ten-thousand-dollar vintage piece, Elias,” Winona pointed out, a small, fascinated smile playing on her lips.

”I depreciated a fabric to appreciate your cultural relevance, Winona,” Elias corrected flawlessly. ”And you will find the cost of that dress, along with the replacement value of my imported Italian silk shirt, deducted from your next gross participation check.”

”Wait, you’re charging us for the shirt you spilled wine on?” Cindy asked, her jaw dropping slightly at the sheer, unfiltered cheapness of the multi-millionaire standing in front of her.

”The spill was a direct tactical necessity born of your inability to coordinate with your respective stylists,” Elias reasoned, entirely deadpan. ”Therefore, the liability falls on the talent. Sovereign Media does not absorb the cost of your egos.”

Before either woman could argue with the terrifying logic of the shameless capitalist, the digital loan shark inside Elias’s mind decided to render its own brutal judgment on the evening’s chaos.

[KAAA-CHINGGG!]

The retro green text flashed violently across Elias’s vision.

Elias’s eye twitched. A single, visible vein throbbed on his temple.

The system was literally taxing him for the stress of managing his own romantic ecosystem. The five hundred dollars was ripped directly from his liquid cash reserves, vanishing into the digital ether. Coupled with his standard fifty-dollar daily maintenance fee, the bleeding was atrocious.

He took a slow, deep breath, maintaining his mask of absolute control.

”Paul,” Elias murmured, his voice tight. ”Find the catering staff. Secure a tray of hors d’oeuvres and wrap them in napkins. We are skipping the charity dinner to recoup our losses.”

Paul sweatdropped, nodding frantically. ”Yes, Elias. I’ll get the miniature quiches.”

Elias turned back to Cindy and Winona, his striking face illuminated by the dim, romantic lighting of the VIP lounge. They were two of the most beautiful, powerful women on earth, and they were both staring at him with a mixture of intense frustration and undeniable, intoxicating attraction. He was an enigma. A monster. A savior in a wine-stained shirt.

”Enjoy your evening, ladies,” Elias offered a slight, deeply elegant bow. ”Try not to collide with any more of my assets.”

He walked away, leaving the Runway Mafia and the Hollywood Royalty to silently process the sheer, terrifying gravity of the man who owned them both.
