Rebirth 1991: Keep the Fame, I'll Take the Royalties

The Billionaire’s Surrender

The morning sun hit the peeling paint of The Pelican Motel with an unforgiving glare. Inside Room 104, the atmosphere was a bizarre cocktail of extreme poverty and high-stakes corporate terrorism.

Paul Rudd was hunched over the edge of the mattress, his face practically pressed against the screen of the motel’s ancient, buzzing tube television. The channel was tuned to CNBC.

Elias van Kempen sat at the wobbly desk. He was dressed in his signature, faded vintage leather jacket, projecting an aura of absolute, terrifying calm. In his hand, he held a plastic spoon, meticulously extracting the last few ounces of generic, sugar-coated cereal from a dented cardboard box. He had exactly six thousand dollars to his name, and he was eating like a king who had already conquered the world.

”Elias,” Paul whispered, his voice trembling as he pointed a shaking finger at the TV screen. ”It’s happening. The ticker. Look at the ticker.”

Elias took a slow, deliberate bite of his cereal. He didn’t turn his head. He simply shifted his dark, predatory eyes toward the television.

On the bottom of the screen, the red stock ticker was flashing with violent, rapid aggression.

OMC (Omnicom Group) -8.4% ▼ | MASSIVE LIQUIDITY SCARE | ANALYSTS DOWNGRADE FOLLOWING UNEXPECTED $12M LIABILITY LEAK...

”Eight point four percent,” Charlize Theron breathed, sitting cross-legged on the floor, her combat boots discarded near the door. She looked from the TV to Elias, a massive, comedic sweatdrop rolling down the side of her face. ”You didn’t just give them a bill. You blew a hole in their stock price.”

”A multinational conglomerate’s valuation is built on the illusion of stability,” Elias explained smoothly, crunching his cereal with shameless, resonant volume. ”When twelve million dollars of toxic debt—yacht leases, condemned real estate, and penalty fines—suddenly materialize on their ledger through a teenage proxy they legally bound themselves to, the illusion shatters. Wall Street hates surprises.”

”They’re going to come for us,” Paul whimpered, wrapping his arms around his knees. ”They are going to send men with briefcases and baseball bats.”

”They will send briefcases,” Elias corrected, taking a sip of the sugary milk left at the bottom of his plastic bowl. ”But they will be filled with surrender documents.”

As if summoned by the sheer, unadulterated arrogance of the statement, the roar of a massive, aggressively expensive engine vibrated through the thin walls of the motel.

Charlize scrambled to her feet and peered through the smudged window blinds.

A sleek, midnight-black Lincoln Town Car limousine had just pulled into the cramped, trash-strewn courtyard of The Pelican Motel. It looked like an alien spaceship landing in a junkyard. The motel manager, currently trying to sweep the walkway, dropped his broom and stared at the vehicle with his mouth hanging open.

The rear door of the limo opened.

A man stepped out. He was in his late fifties, wearing a bespoke Brioni suit that probably cost more than the entire motel. His silver hair was perfectly coiffed, but his face was an absolute disaster. He was pale, sweating profusely, and gripping a leather briefcase so tightly his knuckles were white.

It was John Wren. The CEO of Omnicom Group. One of the most powerful men in global advertising, standing in a puddle of dubious motel water.

”He’s here,” Charlize hissed, backing away from the window. ”The CEO is actually here.”

Elias didn’t panic. He mentally engaged the loan shark.

[CHA-CHING!]

Elias ignored the flashing red warning lights in his HUD. He didn’t need CP to survive the next ten minutes; he just needed the man on the other side of the door to believe he was standing in the presence of a god.

Knock. Knock. Knock.

The blows against the flimsy door were frantic, desperate.

Elias didn’t move. He gestured to Paul with his plastic spoon. ”Open it, Executive Assistant.”

Paul swallowed a lump of pure terror, unlocked the deadbolt, and pulled the door open.

John Wren burst into the room, flanked by two massive bodyguards who immediately looked confused by the squalor of their surroundings. Wren bypassed Paul completely, his eyes locking onto Elias, who was still sitting at the desk, casually chewing his cheap cereal.

”Van Kempen,” Wren gasped, his chest heaving, completely ignoring the fact that he was yelling at a sixteen-year-old boy. ”What the hell have you done?! My CFO is having a nervous breakdown! We have leasing agents from Long Beach threatening to sue us for environmental cleanup! We have Ferrari dealerships sending us insurance bills for cars we don’t even possess!”

Elias didn’t flinch. He didn’t offer the CEO a chair. He simply looked up, the Boardroom Domination Aura rolling off his shoulders like a suffocating, invisible fog.

”Kau mencuri dompetku di Belanda, John,” Elias said, his voice a smooth, flat baritone that completely killed the frantic energy in the room. He took another slow, loud crunch of his cereal. ”Jadi aku menggunakan kartumu untuk membeli kapal pesiar. Ini adalah edukasi ekonomi dasar.” (You stole my wallet in Holland, John, so I used your card to buy a yacht. This is basic economic education.)

Wren stared at him. A massive, highly visible sweatdrop formed on the billionaire’s forehead, rolling down his cheek. He had expected a terrified teenager, crying for his mother. He was facing a stone-cold sociopath who was currently eating a ninety-cent breakfast while holding a twelve-million-dollar gun to the head of a Fortune 500 company.

”You set us up,” Wren whispered, the realization hitting him with physical force. ”You knew the conservatorship made us liable. You purposely signed those insane leases just to trigger the debt transfer.”

”I am a minor, John. I am prone to impulsive, irrational financial decisions,” Elias smiled, a dark, empty expression. ”It is precisely why I needed your ’protection’, isn’t it?”

”Cancel them,” Wren hissed, slamming his hands down on the wobbly desk, nearly knocking over Elias’s bowl. ”You call those brokers right now and you void those contracts. If my stock drops another point, my board of directors will have my head!”

Elias didn’t blink. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a single, cheap motel napkin. He wiped his mouth with aristocratic elegance.

”Aku bisa membatalkannya,” Elias stated, leaning back in his chair. ”Tapi Sovereign Media mengenakan ’Biaya Administrasi Pembatalan’ sebesar dua juta dolar. Tunai. Anggap saja itu denda atas kelancanganmu menemui ibuku.” (I can cancel them. But Sovereign Media charges a ’Cancellation Administration Fee’ of two million dollars. Cash. Consider it a fine for your audacity in visiting my mother.)

The silence in Room 104 was absolute.

Paul Rudd let out a high-pitched squeak and actually fainted, collapsing onto the carpet in a heap. Charlize covered her mouth with both hands, her eyes wide with sheer, unadulterated awe.

Two million dollars.

John Wren looked like he was about to vomit. He stared at Elias, his mind desperately calculating the math. If the twelve-million-dollar liability remained on the books for another twenty-four hours, the stock drop would wipe out hundreds of millions in market cap. Paying the two-million-dollar extortion fee was, sick and twisted as it was, the fiscally responsible choice.

The billionaire CEO was trapped.

”You’re a demon,” Wren choked out, his voice shaking with a mixture of rage and absolute defeat. He grabbed his briefcase, threw it onto the bed, and popped the golden latches.

He pulled out a thick, legal document. It was the complete, unconditional release of the Conservatorship.

”Sign the cancellation orders for the leases,” Wren commanded, his hands trembling as he shoved the release form toward Elias. ”And I will authorize the wire transfer to your offshore account.”

Elias looked at the document. He pulled his silver fountain pen from his jacket. He didn’t sign it immediately.

”A wire transfer takes three business days to clear the international routing protocols, John,” Elias murmured smoothly. ”My liquid cash is currently sitting at six thousand dollars. I have a production schedule to maintain, and my executive assistant,” he pointed down at Paul’s unconscious body, ”requires medical attention. I need immediate liquidity.”

Wren stared at him, literally crying tears of sheer frustration. ”What do you want from me?! I don’t carry two million dollars in a briefcase!”

”No,” Elias agreed. ”But you are a billionaire traveling with a security detail. You carry petty cash.”

Elias held out his hand, completely shameless, palm up.

”Ten thousand dollars. Right now,” Elias demanded. ”As an advance on the two million. Or I let the warehouse in Long Beach default tomorrow.”

John Wren, the CEO of Omnicom Group, let out a broken sob. He reached into his bespoke suit jacket, pulled out a thick, banded stack of crisp hundred-dollar bills—his emergency travel funds—and slammed it into Elias’s open palm.

”Take it!” Wren screamed, his ego entirely annihilated. ”Just sign the damn papers!”

Elias smiled. He signed the release of the Conservatorship, freeing his mother, his assets, and his entire empire in a single stroke of ink. He then quickly drafted the cancellation notices for the absurd leases, tossing them to the broken CEO.

Wren snatched the papers, turned on his heel, and practically ran out of the motel room, his bodyguards scrambling after him.

The Lincoln Town Car peeled out of the parking lot, leaving a cloud of dust and the smell of burning rubber in its wake.

Inside Room 104, Elias van Kempen stood up. He looked at the ten thousand dollars in his hand. He looked at the signed release form that guaranteed his two million dollars.

He had won. He had taken the most terrifying legal trap the corporate elite could throw at him, and he had turned it into his first multi-million-dollar payout.

Deep inside his neural pathways, the loan shark finally broke its silence.

Elias walked over to Paul and gently nudged the unconscious actor with the toe of his scuffed boot.

”Wake up, Paul,” Elias said, his baritone voice a smooth, satisfied rumble. ”The crisis has passed. We are buying pizza.”
