Rebirth 1991: Keep the Fame, I'll Take the Royalties

The Empress’s Foundation

Mid-August in Beverly Hills possessed a very specific texture. It was the texture of manicured palm trees, imported Italian marble, and the quiet, desperate hum of people spending money they didn’t actually have to impress people who didn’t actually care.

Elias van Kempen stood in the center of the sprawling, ultra-luxury penthouse suite of the Regent Beverly Wilshire, entirely immune to the romance of the city lights glittering through the floor-to-ceiling windows.

He was currently staring at a small, embossed piece of white cardstock resting on the grand mahogany dining table. It was the invoice for the night.

Five thousand dollars.

To a man whose liquid capital had just surpassed two million dollars, five thousand was a rounding error. It was a fractional percentage of his net worth. Yet, to the digital loan shark embedded in Elias’s cerebral cortex, and to Elias’s own deeply traumatized, poverty-stricken soul, it was an ungodly, agonizing hemorrhage of physical cash.

”Five thousand dollars,” Elias murmured, his baritone voice a smooth, icy vibration of pure capitalist mourning. ”For a bed, a panoramic view of vehicular congestion, and soap shaped like a seashell. I could fund a guerrilla marketing campaign in three European countries with this capital. I could purchase a controlling stake in a mid-level textile manufacturer.”

Behind him, the heavy oak doors to the suite clicked open. Paul Rudd shuffled in, carrying a silver ice bucket holding a bottle of vintage Dom Pérignon. Paul looked around the palatial suite, his jaw practically hitting the plush Persian rug.

”Elias... this place is unbelievable,” Paul breathed, setting the heavy bucket on the table. He looked at Elias, who was glaring at the invoice as if it had personally insulted his mother. ”Are you actually pouting? You have two million dollars! You just bought a Hollywood studio for pocket change! You can afford a nice hotel room for one night!”

”I am not pouting, Paul. I am experiencing severe fiscal grief,” Elias corrected, adjusting the cuffs of his impeccably tailored, midnight-blue silk shirt. He didn’t even glance at the champagne. ”That fermented grape juice you are holding likely costs more than a month’s rent in Den Haag. Did you pay for it out of the petty cash fund?”

”It was complimentary with the penthouse, Elias!” Paul shrieked, clutching the ice bucket protectively. ”Look, you told me you were hosting a ’vital strategic summit’ tonight. I brought the champagne. I made sure the paparazzi don’t know you’re here. Now, please, for the love of God, act like a billionaire playboy and stop acting like an accountant auditing a bakery!”

Elias finally looked up, his dark, striking eyes locking onto his assistant with a flawless, shameless smile.

”You have fulfilled your logistical parameters, Paul. You are dismissed,” Elias commanded smoothly. ”Return to the motel. Ensure the air conditioning unit is turned off to preserve electricity.”

Paul opened his mouth to protest, but the sheer, overwhelming dominance radiating from Elias’s posture silenced him. He grumbled something about labor laws and toxic work environments before scurrying out of the penthouse, leaving Elias alone in the cavernous, opulent silence.

Elias checked his Rolex. It was precisely eight o’clock.

Ten minutes later, a soft, rhythmic knock echoed through the suite.

Elias glided across the marble foyer and opened the door.

Standing in the hallway was Charlize Theron.

The air in the room seemed to physically shift. At seventeen, she already possessed the kind of breathtaking, apex-predator beauty that made casting directors hyperventilate. She wasn’t dressed in the garish, oversized neon trends of the early 90s. She wore a sleek, minimalist black slip dress that fell perfectly against her statuesque frame, her blonde hair swept over one shoulder. She looked like a weapon forged from pure cinematic gold.

Elias didn’t offer a cheesy pickup line. He didn’t gawk. He offered her a smile of absolute, magnetic charm, stepping aside to let her in.

”Welcome to the apex of municipal overpricing,” Elias murmured, his voice a low, welcoming hum.

Charlize stepped into the foyer, her heels clicking against the marble. She took in the sweeping staircase, the grand piano, and the breathtaking view of the Los Angeles skyline. She didn’t look intimidated. She looked exactly like she belonged there.

”Five thousand a night, I heard from Paul,” Charlize teased, turning to face him, a brilliant, knowing smirk playing on her lips. ”I’m surprised you didn’t ask the concierge if they offered a discount for bringing your own towels.”

”I considered it, but the cost-benefit analysis of arguing with the front desk yielded a negative return on my time,” Elias replied flawlessly, walking toward the dining table. He effortlessly popped the cork on the Dom Pérignon, the soft thwip echoing in the quiet room. ”Champagne?”

”Only if it was free,” she laughed, walking over to join him.

Elias handed her a crystal flute. Their fingers brushed for a fraction of a second. A sharp, undeniable electric current sparked between them, completely unscripted and entirely visceral.

They walked out onto the sprawling, glass-paneled balcony. The warm, dry Santa Ana winds swept over the city, carrying the faint, distant sounds of sirens and traffic. Below them, Los Angeles stretched out like a glittering, sprawling circuit board of ambition and broken dreams.

This was the city that had tried to starve them both. And tonight, they were standing on top of it.

”I heard about the Sunset Boulevard property,” Charlize said, taking a sip of the champagne. She leaned against the glass railing, the city lights reflecting in her eyes. ”Paul told me you bought an abandoned theater. And then, he mentioned something about the EPA, asbestos, and David Fincher.”

She turned her head to look at Elias, her eyebrows raised in absolute, disbelieving amusement.

”Tell me you didn’t actually scam the director of Alien 3 into paying for your toxic waste cleanup,” she whispered, a wide grin breaking across her flawless face.

”I provided Mr. Fincher with a highly curated, authentic environment of urban decay,” Elias smiled shamelessly, taking a sip from his own glass. ”His artistic vision required filth. My corporate ledger required liquidity. I merely facilitated a synergistic transaction. He paid the city’s abatement fee under the guise of an ’Artistic Environmental Conditioning’ clause.”

Charlize threw her head back and let out a rich, unrestrained laugh. It was a beautiful, genuine sound that cut through the sterile luxury of the penthouse.

She was the only woman in the world who truly understood him. The other models in the industry saw Elias as a terrifying, untouchable god. The executives saw him as a monster. But Charlize had been there on Hollywood Boulevard when they were both broke, desperate immigrants. She had seen him extort a bank teller for a ten percent commission on her own cashed check. She didn’t just tolerate his sociopathic capitalism; she reveled in it.

”You are unbelievable,” she breathed, shaking her head, her laughter subsiding into a warm, lingering smile. ”A month ago, we were eating stale bagels. Tonight, you have two million dollars in the bank, a Hollywood studio, and the executives at Showtime are probably taking blood pressure medication because of you.”

The playful banter faded, replaced by a sudden, heavy shift in atmospheric gravity.

The cool night breeze whipped a strand of blonde hair across her face. Elias reached out. His movements were slow, deliberate, and utterly devoid of hesitation. He gently tucked the stray lock of hair behind her ear. His long, calloused fingers lingered for a microsecond against the soft skin of her jawline.

Charlize’s breath hitched. The air between them suddenly felt incredibly thin.

Elias didn’t pull away. He mentally engaged the digital parasite waiting in the dark corners of his mind. It was time to lay the absolute, unbreakable foundation of his empire. He needed her loyalty not just as a business partner, but as the gravitational center of his entire future.

The biological shift was instantaneous. The micro-muscles around Elias’s dark eyes relaxed into a state of supreme, hypnotic dominance. His posture shifted, projecting an aura of lethal, protective authority. He wasn’t just a handsome model anymore; he was a king looking at his queen. The pheromonal and psychological pressure radiating from him was intoxicating, designed to bypass logic and strike directly at the emotional core.

Charlize looked up into his eyes, and she felt a sudden, thrilling shiver race down her spine. The playful boy she had bantered with a moment ago was gone. Standing before her was an apex predator who had claimed her as his own.

She reached up, her hand gently cupping the side of his face. Her thumb brushed against the faint, fading bruise on his cheekbone—a remnant of the Detroit Brawler.

”Kau baru saja menipu sutradara terbesar di industri ini dan merampas jutaan dolar dari jaringan TV, Elias,” Charlize whispered, her voice husky, her eyes searching the dark, mesmerizing depths of his gaze. ”Apa kau tidak pernah merasa puas?” (You just scammed the biggest director in the industry and extorted millions from a TV network, Elias. Are you never satisfied?)

Elias stepped closer, erasing the remaining distance between them. The scent of his expensive, custom musk mixed with the crisp night air. He didn’t break eye contact. He reached out, his hand sliding smoothly around her waist, pulling her flush against his chest. His touch was incredibly possessive, yet carrying an underlying current of absolute, devoted respect.

He looked down at her, his lips curving into a smile of devastating, shameless ambition.

”Kepuasan adalah mitos yang diciptakan oleh kelas menengah untuk membenarkan kemalasan, schat,” Elias murmured, his baritone voice a dark, velvet whisper that vibrated against her skin. (Satisfaction is a myth created by the middle class to justify laziness, darling.)

He slowly trailed the knuckles of his free hand down the elegant curve of her neck. Charlize closed her eyes for a brief second, leaning into his touch, utterly captivated by the overwhelming gravity of his presence.

”Tugasku adalah menguasai ruang rapat dan menghancurkan para eksekutif itu,” Elias continued, his words a solemn, blood-bound vow delivered with the cadence of a corporate takeover. (My job is to dominate the boardrooms and crush those executives.) ”Tugasmu adalah berdiri di depan kamera dan membuat dunia memujamu.” (Your job is to stand in front of the camera and make the world worship you.)

He tilted her chin up slightly, forcing her to look back into the dark, hypnotic voids of his eyes.

”Aku tidak akan berhenti sampai setiap studio di kota ini berlutut memohon untuk mempekerjakanmu,” Elias promised, his voice stripped of all its usual sarcasm, leaving only raw, terrifying devotion. ”Dan wajahmu berada di setiap layar bioskop di bumi. Kau akan menjadi Ratu di industri ini, dan aku akan menjadi bank yang membiayainya.” (I will not stop until every studio in this town is on its knees begging to hire you, and your face is on every cinema screen on earth. You will be the Queen in this industry, and I will be the bank that finances it.)

Charlize stared at him, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs.

She had met hundreds of men in Los Angeles who promised her the stars. Directors, producers, trust-fund babies. They all offered her roles in exchange for her submission. They all wanted to own her beauty.

Elias was different. Elias didn’t want to own her; he wanted to own the world so he could lay it at her feet. He wasn’t offering her a role in a movie. He was offering her the entire studio system.

It was the ultimate, intoxicating aphrodisiac.

She didn’t reply with words. She slid her arms around his neck, pulling herself tightly against his chest, burying her face into the crook of his shoulder. She could feel the steady, powerful rhythm of his heartbeat beneath the silk shirt.

Elias wrapped both arms around her, holding her with the fierce, unyielding grip of a dragon guarding its most precious hoard. He rested his chin on the top of her head, looking out over the glittering, sprawling expanse of Los Angeles.

The transaction was complete. The foundation of the dynasty had been poured.

They stood there in the quiet luxury of the penthouse balcony, two immigrants who had arrived in Hollywood with nothing but empty pockets and sharp teeth. The industry thought it could chew them up and spit them out. They were about to learn that Sovereign Media did not play by the rules of the old guard.

The digital ledger chimed quietly in Elias’s mind, a subtle reminder of the ticking clock of capitalism.

His balance adjusted to $2,087,258.00.

For once, Elias van Kempen did not mourn the loss of capital. He held the future Empress of Hollywood in his arms, feeling the absolute, unbreakable weight of her loyalty.

He looked down at the streetlights of Sunset Boulevard far below.

Let them keep their flat fees and their standard contracts, Elias thought, his eyes narrowing with cold, calculating ambition. I am coming for the equity.
