The Female Lead Decides to Act Wickedly

Chapter 700: Chapter 284 My Mother-in-law is a Loyal Servant (Finale)_2

Following this, Marquis Pingnan urged the Capital Governor repeatedly to expedite the investigation of the case.

The truth was no longer important; what mattered was that the troublesome slave, Nanny Zhao, must die!

The efficiency of the Magistrate Mansion was not lacking, mainly because Nanny Zhao had intentionally left some clues behind.

Following these clues, the Capital Governor conducted a thorough investigation, and indeed, the truth was restored—Feng Yanting was indeed the legitimate son born to Mrs. Zhang for Marquis Pingnan, and it was Nanny Zhao who secretly switched the babies.

As for why Nanny Zhao would do such a thing?

Obviously, it was out of greed for the wealth of the Marquis Mansion, using the Matriarch’s favor to switch the children in hopes of usurping the nest!

Once the investigation results were disclosed, Nanny Zhao faced a torrent of curses.

As a troublesome slave deceiving her master, with a malicious mind, feigning love and being utterly insane...

With the Marquis Pingnan’s Mansion covertly fanning the flames, Nanny Zhao soon became the epitome of a villainous and wicked servant, a classic villain worthy of being written into the tales of novelists.

Nanny Zhao:...

Originally, she could not hear these insults and mockeries while in the dungeon.

But she had a naive and filial son, after all.

”Heh, heh heh!” After listening to the dejected Feng Zhongliang recount these words, Nanny Zhao, already haggard and dazed from the torment in the dungeon, let out a burst of noise from her throat.

Her eyes bulging out, her face filled with grief and indignation, and finally, with a twist of her head, she actually died from rage!

He Tiantian:...How does it feel to be forced to take the blame? Isn’t it dreadful?

In fact, what happened to Nanny Zhao, was still much better than the original owner of the body.

The original owner first slaved away for the Feng Family for over a decade, then ended up with a horrible reputation, and was eventually sentenced to beheading.

On the way to the execution ground, the original owner was pelted with rotten vegetable leaves and smelly eggs by numerous contemptuous or mockingly curious people.

Having her head chopped off, she still became fodder for stories, providing an enduringly popular ”Stolen Dragon for Phoenix” play for future generations.

It was indeed wrong of the original owner to attempt to switch the children.

But her sin was not so great as to nail her to the pillar of shame for eternity, was it?

Besides, the only one truly qualified to judge the original owner is Wei Yuanniang, the victim, not Mrs. Zhang, Nanny Zhao, and Wei Yanting who had once been supported by the original owner.

Of course, He Tiantian did all this not to avenge the original owner, but to seek justice.

Mrs. Zhang was ”sick,” ostensibly sent to a villa for recuperation, but in reality, it was an exile by Marquis Pingnan.

Nanny Zhao died still bearing the stigma, dying ”wrongfully” in disgrace.

He Tiantian felt that ”Gu Xiuniang” had settled her grievances with the Marquis Mansion.

So, when she met with people sent secretly by Marquis Pingnan, He Tiantian did not say much, only giving a slow nod.

Marquis Pingnan:...Damn it, finally, that woman has shut her mouth!

He Tiantian did not persist in clinging on, while Marquis Pingnan endeavored to suppress the issue and somehow came up with new Eight Trigrams.

Thus, the uproarious ”substitution of the heir” matter of the Marquis Mansion quietly drew to a close.

Marquis Pingnan stabilized the inner estate and then began to haggle with Emperor Chengtai.

Marquis Pingnan wanted to return to the Southwest as soon as possible, whereas Emperor Chengtai was reluctant to return the Pingnan Army to the Wei Family.

If it had been some days earlier, Emperor Chengtai might have considered supporting a Wei puppet.

But since Marquis Pingnan had captured several barbarian leaders, the unrest in the Southwest was temporarily contained, making Emperor Chengtai less in need of the Wei Family.

Not to mention, the influence Marquis Pingnan wielded in the Southwest was so high that should he be allowed to return there, it would be like releasing the tiger back into the mountain.

Of course, the Saint did not wish to let Marquis Pingnan return, but he couldn’t force him outright.

Mrs. Zhang is sick, isn’t she? Then let Marquis Pingnan and his wife recuperate well in the Capital City!

Marquis Pingnan:...

There was a moment when Marquis Pingnan truly wished he could just kill Mrs. Zhang and be done with it!

Unfortunately, he couldn’t!

Since the Saint had mentioned Mrs. Zhang, it meant that she had entered the surveillance range of the Saint.

If something happened to Mrs. Zhang, Marquis Pingnan would be actively delivering leverage into the hands of the Saint.

Yet if he continued to let the Saint use Mrs. Zhang as an excuse to force him to stay in Capital City, he was extremely unwilling.

”...Father, please take mother to the Southwest. I will stay behind.”

Feng Yanting, oh no, the newly acknowledged Wei Yanting, sensing Marquis Pingnan’s dilemma, took the initiative and said, ”I should have come to the Capital City in the first place, and now staying here is just resuming the proper course!”

”Mother is unwell; perhaps it’s the climate of the Capital City she’s not used to, or maybe it’s the memories that haunt her. Although Nanny Zhao committed a great wrong, she served mother for decades after all. Seeing her meet such an unhappy end surely grieves mother!”
