Chapter 1408: Chapter 30: Night Infiltration

When it was completely dark, searchlights lit up one after another inside St. Limen fortress, sweeping over the Geya Alliance lines.

Although the searchlight bulbs were often shot out, the Sun Kingdom side would immediately replace them with new high‑wattage bulbs, to keep the enemy from sneaking into the fortress under cover of night.

”Sir, are you sure this is fine? I keep feeling a chill down my back.”

A woman’s voice came from a shell hole 300 meters below the fortress.

”Shut up.”

The shell hole fell silent.

”Don’t paint there too... this is so embarrassing...”

”...”

”Sir, you’re groping your female subordinate under the pretext of the mission, that’s a court‑martial offense—uwu~ I was wrong.”

In the pitch‑black shell hole, the little assistant, her whole body smeared with mud and her eyes especially bright, poked her head out and swept her gaze around.

”No enemies found, sir. Sir?”

The little assistant tilted her head to look—Su Xiao was already gone.

In a shell crater a dozen meters away from the little assistant, Su Xiao was choking an enemy’s neck from behind and covering the man’s mouth and nose with his hand. Between his legs lay another body whose neck had already been snapped.

”Uu~”

Crack!

With a crisp sound, the enemy Su Xiao was choking stopped struggling.

A black shadow pounced in; this shadow had a dagger in hand and started frantically stabbing the enemy between Su Xiao’s legs, several thrusts almost hitting Su Xiao’s thighs.

Su Xiao’s boot slammed into the little assistant’s side waist. She let out a strangled grunt, a sound almost identical to when Su Xiao kicked Bu Bu.

The little assistant pulled a bitter face and looked at Su Xiao.

”He’s already dead.”

”Eh~ is that so.”

The little assistant grabbed the corpse by the collar and shook it. The enemy was indeed already cold.

Never mind her mistake of repeatedly stabbing a corpse; just that ferocity alone was something most women didn’t have.

Su Xiao took out a pair of Night Vision Goggles and tossed them to the little assistant. She put them on with a puzzled look, then as if discovering a new world, she reached out and grabbed at the air in front of her.

The Night Vision Goggles Su Xiao provided were certainly not standard‑tech Night Vision Goggles. In the little assistant’s view right now, aside from the whole world looking greenish, what she saw actually had color, though the colors were very faint.

The little assistant looked at Su Xiao.

”Sir, you’re green.”

The little assistant gave a cheeky grin and almost got kicked again by Su Xiao. When she took a kick, she never got angry, because from Su Xiao’s actions she could sense something—namely, that in Su Xiao’s eyes she wasn’t some weak girl, but a soldier. On the battlefield there was no distinction between male and female soldiers.

Su Xiao pointed at two shell craters ahead. Two enemies were lying in ambush there; these Sun Kingdom Soldiers were on guard against enemies infiltrating the fortress at night.

Once it was fully dark, the battlefield turned deathly silent. Only occasional gunshots could be heard—some scummy rookies trying to scare the enemy. It did little in practice. The veterans weren’t afraid of that kind of sporadic fire; but if they heard the howl of shells, they’d jolt awake from sleep.

The little assistant looked at the two craters Su Xiao indicated and understood what he meant: one crater had five men inside, the other had two.

Su Xiao would clear the crater with five; the little assistant would handle the other two.

The little assistant went prone and slowly crawled toward the crater with two men.

As a searchlight beam swept by, the little assistant immediately froze. She turned her head to look at Su Xiao—he’d vanished again.

After a faint muffled groan, Su Xiao snapped an enemy’s throat. His left arm gave a tug and the Blood‑stained Boundary Line drew tight; the smooth strand flicked off the blood and finally retracted into the Wire Wheel.

Using the cover of Night, Su Xiao looked toward the other crater not far away.

”Mmm...”

A whimper came from the neighboring crater. The little assistant had her legs wrapped around a soldier’s neck, one hand clamped over his mouth and nose, her whole body riding on his shoulders.

The dagger spun in the little assistant’s hand; her arm swung down, and the Sharp dagger pierced into the enemy’s Heavenly Spirit Cover.

The enemy’s body went limp, but the little assistant still kept a death‑grip on his mouth and nose, causing her to slam head‑first into the soft mud.

Behind the little assistant lay a soldier whose throat had been cut more than halfway through; the smell of Blood spread out.

The little assistant shook the dirt from her head and looked toward Su Xiao’s side. She felt she’d taken her targets down pretty fast—maybe she could even go give Su Xiao a hand.

When the little assistant crawled into Su Xiao’s crater, her brows knit together. She couldn’t smell any Blood, but when she saw the five bodies neatly arranged together, without even any obvious wounds on them, her pride took a bit of a hit. She was supposed to be coming to the rescue...

”Not bad work.”

Su Xiao fastened his buttons; he’d already changed into a Sun Kingdom uniform.

”Ten seconds.”

Su Xiao tossed a set of Sun Kingdom uniform to the little assistant. She sighed, and rustling sounds came from the Darkness. A moment later, the little assistant, wearing a steel helmet and the enemy’s uniform, was fully kitted out.

”Dagger.”

Su Xiao looked at the little assistant’s Weapon. This time she hesitated; this dagger had some special meaning to her.

”Damn it.”

The little assistant drove her dagger into the mud and yanked a standard‑issue dagger off an enemy corpse.

”Sir, then it’s settled.”

”...?”

Su Xiao looked slightly puzzled.

”If we pull this mission off, you’re giving me a Special Screw Steel Dagger. You just said so yourself.”

The little assistant raised what was basically a sure‑death flag.

”Did I? I know a cemetery with a pretty nice view.”

”Ha, I was just kidding. This dagger’s fine. Good condition, and the chips... the chips along the edge are real neat~”

Su Xiao and the little assistant had to creep forward. Right now they were about a hundred meters from the enemy trenches.

The hardest part of infiltrating the enemy fortress was a strip fifty meters in front of their trenches. That strip was lit up by hundreds of searchlights with basically no blind spots. Once you entered it, you’d be in full view of the enemy; who knew how many Snipers were staring at that kill zone.

The strip was at least twenty meters wide. Banking on his Speed alone, Su Xiao couldn’t realistically sprint across. Those Snipers had terrifying Dynamic Vision. They didn’t need to clearly see Su Xiao—if anything looked suspicious, they’d pull the alarm, and then came artillery bombardment to plow the ground.

Once, a rabbit that crawled out of a burrow and ran across that strip got blown into chunks by shells. Only after a few minutes of shelling and heavy machine‑gun fire did everything quiet down.

”Sir, what do we do?”

The little assistant stared at the bright strip of Light a dozen meters away; it was like a demarcation line.

”We wait.”

Su Xiao took out a timer. He was three minutes ahead of schedule.

The three minutes passed quickly. In their own trenches, a man whose face was extensively burned stuck his head out over the parapet.

”That ghost actually came begging me for help. Feels damn good.”

The man gave a sinister chuckle and raised his rifle to aim.

Bang!

The gunshot tore through the Night sky. A bullet struck the lightning rod at the top of St. Limen fortress, ricocheted, and finally hit a bulb on the sloping rear of the fortress.

A section of the Light‑flooded zone went dark. At the same time, a shape flashed through the Darkness, seemingly with something slung in its hand.
