Football: Maxed Out The Wrong Stat

November arrived, and with it the specific rhythm of a season finding its shape.

Schalke’s fixture list didn’t slow down to accommodate anyone’s storyline. Three Bundesliga rounds followed the Tel Aviv trip in quick succession, each one a data point in a run of form that was beginning to look less like a hot streak and more like a genuine identity.

Round 9 brought Hoffenheim to the Veltins-Arena.

They arrived looking thoroughly organized and compact, a classic mid-table side that had clearly traveled with far more defensive discipline than attacking ambition. From the opening whistle, the match settled into a familiar, high-stakes chess game. Schalke dominated possession, refusing to force the issue and instead patiently circulating the ball across the backline, waiting for the slightest tear in Hoffenheim’s defensive fabric.

That tear finally opened in the 31t minute. Farfán found a pocket of space down the flank and whipped a sharp, low cross into the box. Raúl, showing the predatory instinct that defined his career, anticipated the flight perfectly, meeting it first-time from six yards out to break the deadlock.

The second blow landed in the 64th minute, killing off any hopes of a Hoffenheim comeback. Mateo caught the center-backs shifting, waiting for the exact split-second they lost their alignment. He slid a gorgeous, laser-accurate diagonal ball right between them, slicing the defense wide open. Huntelaar latched onto it in full stride, kept his composure as the goalkeeper rushed out to close the angle, and calmly slotted it home to double the lead.

Fweet—! Fweet—! Fweeeet—!

2–0. One assist for Mateo. A comfortable, professional afternoon — the kind of match that didn’t produce highlight reels but did produce three points, which mattered considerably more in the long arithmetic of a league season.

Round 10 — Kaiserslautern, away.

This one was harder. Kaiserslautern, fighting for their own points near the relegation zone, defended with the specific desperation of a team that understood exactly what was at stake for them, packing bodies behind the ball and refusing to be drawn out.

Schalke’s relay worked without producing chances for most of the match — the amber lines forming and dissolving, Kaiserslautern’s low block absorbing everything without cracking. It held until the eighty-eighth minute. Their exhausted defensive midfielder, tracking Mateo for what felt like the hundredth time that afternoon, finally arrived a half-step late. It was all the space Mateo needed to whip a diagonal pass from the top of the box — a trajectory he had been patiently setting up for the last ten minutes.

Raúl met it clean with a header, scoring the only goal of the match.

Fweet—!

1–0.

A hard-fought, unglamorous win — the kind that separated a team building something real from a team riding good form.

Round 11 — Wolfsburg, home.

The fixture against Wolfsburg carried a heavy, unspoken narrative weight. They were Magath’s former club — the exact team he had miraculously engineered into Bundesliga champions back in 2008–09, a dizzying pinnacle from which the club had fallen considerably since his departure.

When Magath emerged from the tunnel, the reception from the traveling Wolfsburg supporters was a tangled, messy thing. There was undeniable respect there, of course, but it was heavily laced with that bitter, personal resentment reserved strictly for a manager who gives a fan base the greatest moment of their lives and then leaves to build something new with a rival. The away end didn’t quite know whether to boo the man who broke their hearts or cheer the man who gave them their only star, creating a strange, conflicted hum that echoed through the stadium long before kickoff.

Magath said little about it beforehand. He rarely said much about anything that wasn’t tactical, and this wasn’t an exception. In the team meeting the night before, he ran through Wolfsburg’s shape with the same attention he gave every opponent, no visible sentiment attached to any of it. If the occasion meant something to him personally, he kept it entirely off the training ground.

Jones, walking out of the meeting, said quietly to Mateo: ”He built that whole club. Then he left them for us.”

”Does that bother you?”

”No.” Jones considered it further. ”It’s just football. He works here now.”

The match itself was one-sided from early on. Wolfsburg’s decline since their title-winning peak was visible in real time — a team that had lost its shape and its confidence in roughly equal measure, still containing individually talented players but no longer resembling the coherent unit that had shocked the Bundesliga two seasons earlier. Schalke scored four without particular difficulty: Huntelaar with two, Raúl with one, and a late Farfán finish that Mateo set up with a pass that split three defenders in the space of two seconds.

Fweet—! Fweet—! Fweeeet—!

Four-nil. Mateo had finished his shift early, withdrawn in the seventieth minute as Magath carefully managed his workload, leaving the pitch with two assists already tucked into his belt.

At the final whistle, Magath offered his former club’s coaching staff a brief, firm handshake. It was the tight greeting of a man carrying complicated memories, with absolutely no intention of putting them on display for the cameras. He turned and walked straight down the tunnel, never lingering, never casting a single glance back at the pitch where he had once built something historic.

Three matches. Three wins. Schalke had now racked up victories in five of their last six outings across all competitions. The rough, early-season stumble now felt like ancient history, as if it belonged to a completely different team entirely.

Off the pitch, the hidden numbers were quietly stacking up.

His Training Points were climbing steadily, with thirty-five banked over the recent run to add to his existing balance.

By Sunday evening, with the Wolfsburg match behind them, Mateo finally sat back on his bed. Unlocking the system interface, he began to run the actual math for the first time in weeks.

Twenty-one match points. Enough for the two remaining Beckham Curve fragments, at ten points each.

He looked at the number for a long moment.

Bayern Munich was next.

He closed the system, set his alarm, and thought about what a completed free kick might mean against a defence that size, at a stadium that size, in a match that would matter more than anything he’d played since arriving in Germany.

He decided not to save the points any longer.

There would be other seasons for patience. This match wasn’t one of them.
