Football: Maxed Out The Wrong Stat

The alarm went off at five, same as always.

Mateo sat up, dressed in the dark, and was out the door within four minutes. The dormitory building was quiet — the building was always quiet at this hour, the handful of academy players who used the floor above still asleep, the corridor lights on their dimmed overnight setting.

Outside, the October air had the specific bite of a Gelsenkirchen autumn morning, cold enough to feel in the lungs on the first few breaths. He walked to the training ground in the dark and turned the floodlights on himself.

He worked for two hours before anyone else arrived.

This was the rhythm now: stairwell drills on away trips, the training ground at home, the system tracking every hour regardless of where the hour was spent.

He was midway through a passing sequence against the rebound wall when he became aware of someone watching from the edge of the pitch.

He looked over. A woman, mid-twenties, dressed for the cold in a long coat, standing with the particular stillness of someone who had stopped on her way somewhere else and was deciding whether to keep walking.

He didn’t recognise her. He nodded anyway, the neutral acknowledgement you gave anyone on club grounds at an unusual hour, and went back to the wall.

When he looked again a few minutes later, she was gone.

Lisa Hartmann had been at Schalke for four months, working under the team’s medical staff while finishing her doctoral research at Cambridge in absentia — sports physiology, specifically the relationship between recovery markers and training load in adolescent athletes. The Schalke position had come through a connection from her supervisor, and she’d taken it because elite training environments were difficult to access for research purposes and because, privately, she preferred actual football clubs to laboratories.

She hadn’t expected to be at the training ground at six in the morning on a Monday. But the club’s all-hands directive for Champions League week had everyone arriving early, and she’d walked the long way to the medical building specifically because it passed the pitch, and she’d seen someone out there working through a passing drill alone in near-darkness with the kind of repetitive precision that, professionally, interested her far more than it should have at that hour.

By the time she reached her desk, Dr. Haber had already called twice.

”We need everyone scanned and processed before the squad meeting,” he said when she picked up. ”Champions League week. Magath wants full data on every player who featured at Bremen.”

”I’m here,” she said. ”Give me ten minutes.”

Mateo finished his final set of high-intensity drills. His phone, resting on a nearby water crate, had been buzzing constantly since the previous evening, the vibration rattling against the plastic with a persistence that suggested whoever was calling had no intention of stopping.

He trotted over, wiping sweat from his forehead, and reached out to finally check the screen.

”Mr. Silva.”

Mateo paused and looked up. Dr. Haber was walking toward him across the pitch, a clipboard tucked under his arm.

”Leave the phone,” the doctor said, gesturing toward the facility buildings. ”Standard post-match assessment. We need your full muscle and recovery data before Wednesday’s fixture. Head up to the examination room now.”

”Understood,” Mateo said, dropping his hand.

He walked into the facility and found the examination room. It was unglamorous in the specific way of a Bundesliga club that hadn’t yet decided whether to invest seriously in its medical infrastructure, a single scanning bed, two monitoring units, and a basic printer that slowly hummed out low-resolution reports.

Dr. Haber entered a moment later, passing the clipboard to a waiting assistant. ”Lisa will run the scan. I have four more players waiting.”

Lisa gestured toward the bed. ”Whenever you’re ready.”

The scan itself was pure routine. Lisa worked with the smooth, easy competence of someone who could do this in her sleep, sticking sensors across Mateo’s calves and thighs. Mateo just lay back and let it happen. After ninety minutes on the pitch and a cramped flight home, lying perfectly still on a scanning bed felt less like a medical chore and more like a luxury.

”You played the whole ninety yesterday,” Lisa said, her voice casual as she tapped at her monitor, mostly just breaking the quiet.

”Yeah. Plus the flight back,” Mateo muttered, staring at the ceiling.

”How’s the body actually feeling?”

”Fine. Just regular tired.”

Lisa didn’t just take his word for it; she looked him over properly. As a medic, you learn to spot when a player is lying to stay on the roster. But Mateo’s shoulders were relaxed, his breathing was steady, and he wasn’t favoring one side or guarding any muscles. He really did look totally fine.

”Good,” she said, turning back to the screen. ”Let’s see what the data says.”

The machine chimed as the report compiled. Lisa leaned in to grab the printout, her eyes skimming the text, and then she just... froze.

Mateo watched her. The easy, rhythmic clicking of her keyboard had stopped completely.

Without saying a word, Lisa frowned, tapped a few buttons, and restarted the sensor calibration. She reran the leg scans. The machine hummed, processed, and spit out the exact same result.

”Lisa?” Mateo sat up, the paper crinkling under him. ”Is something wrong?”

”No,” she said, though the answer came a second too late to be convincing. ”Stay right there. I need to get Dr. Haber.”

A minute later, Dr. Haber was staring at the paper, his eyebrows knit so tightly they almost met. He looked from the report to Mateo, then back again.

”Run it again,” Haber said, his voice dropping.

”I already did,” Lisa replied quietly. ”Twice.”

”Use the backup monitor. Swap the cables.”

She did it all, her fingers moving fast now. But when the screen flashed its final update, the number didn’t budge.

It was right there: 2%.

Dr. Haber sat down at his desk, which he rarely did during a working morning, and looked at the figure with the specific expression of a physician confronted with data that contradicted everything his training told him should be possible.

Muscle fatigue, as a clinical measure, tracked the accumulated micro-damage and metabolic byproduct buildup in tissue following exertion. A player who had completed ninety minutes of Bundesliga football the previous day, followed by a flight home and a short night’s sleep, should show readings in the high teens to mid-twenties — Neuer, who had the least physically demanding ninety minutes of anyone on the pitch, had registered 17%. Per Kluge, who covered more distance than almost anyone, was at 24%. Even Raúl, whose experience and conditioning were exceptional for his age, sat at 19%.

Mateo’s reading was 2%.

It made absolutely no sense. Even accounting for a seventeen-year-old’s rapid metabolism, teenagers didn’t recover ten times faster than seasoned veterans. And it wasn’t like Mateo had coasted through the match; his GPS tracker showed he’d actually covered more distance in the second half, constantly drifting into space to link up the passing play. That kind of high-frequency, short-burst running usually left a player’s muscles completely drained.

”The calibration must be off on both units,” Dr. Haber muttered, rubbing his chin as he stared at the readout. ”But a double hardware failure with the exact same variance is highly unlikely.”

”Could it be a glitch in how his baseline was logged?” Lisa asked, leaning over his shoulder.

”Maybe, but that wouldn’t explain why his current lactic acid indicators are virtually nonexistent.” Haber tapped his clipboard against his thigh, his brow furrowed. ”It’s not showing signs of an injury or illness. It just looks... wrong. Like we’re reading the chart of someone who didn’t just play ninety minutes of professional football.”

He picked up the printout. ”I need to pass this along to Magath before Wednesday’s match. Not because there’s a problem, but just so he knows what the data is claiming.”

Meanwhile, Mateo was completely oblivious to the confusion he’d left behind in the medical wing. Walking back toward the dormitory, he finally flipped his phone screen on.

The display lit up with a wall of notifications: Thirty-one missed calls.

He scrolled through the list. Most were unrecognized German prefixes, one was an international number, and two were from Reinhardt’s office line. Instead of dealing with the stress of the voicemails, Mateo simply powered the phone back down and shoved it into his pocket. The calls had been piling up since yesterday; they could wait a little longer. Urgency wasn’t going to solve whatever chaos was waiting on the other end.

Right now, he had more practical things to worry about before Wednesday. He needed to study the Twente tactical videos, manage the calf that was still faintly sore, and find some privacy to figure out what, exactly, the system meant by an ”Equipment Treasure Chest” reward.

Reaching his room, he kicked off his trainers and collapsed onto the bed, shutting his eyes for a quick twenty-minute reset before the mandatory squad meeting.

In the medical building, Dr. Haber was already walking toward Magath’s office, still trying to make sense of the piece of paper in his hand.
