Football: Maxed Out The Wrong Stat

Magath had two problems.

The first was the contract. Carvajal had sent a politely worded letter to Reinhardt’s office on Tuesday confirming that his client’s conditions remained unchanged — 80% of image rights to Mateo personally, a free transfer clause after one season, salary secondary — and that the client was available to discuss these conditions whenever the club was prepared to accept them. The language was professional and entirely devoid of urgency, which Reinhardt had apparently found more unsettling than a demand. He’d called Magath to complain about it. Magath had told him it was his own fault for putting a €500,000 clause in the original contract and ended the call.

The second problem was Michel Preud’homme.

Preud’homme, in the pre-match press conference on Tuesday evening, had said approximately the following: that Twente were current Eredivisie champions, that they’d won their first six league matches of the current season without conceding defeat, that they’d beaten Schalke 2-1 in the UEFA Cup two seasons prior, and that they were not travelling to Gelsenkirchen as participants — they were travelling as competitors. He had delivered this with the specific composure of an Englishman who had managed in the Netherlands long enough to understand both the Dutch media and the German one, and had chosen his words accordingly.

The German newspapers had produced the following from this: Preud’homme: Schalke Don’t Belong in This Competition.

Magath had read it with the kind of resigned fury of a man who understood exactly how the tabloid mechanism worked and could not stop it regardless. The fans had read it with less resignation.

By Wednesday morning, the city had taken on a colour.

The Veltins-Arena, Schalke’s home ground for European competition, could hold 54,740. Magath had watched it fill for Bundesliga matches and cup ties, but the Champions League carried something additional — the specific weight of a crowd that understood this was rarer than domestic football, that not every season offered it, that the occasion demanded something more than the usual weekly commitment. Fans had been arriving since the afternoon, wearing the blue jerseys, filling the streets around the stadium, the particular sound of a city preparing for something.

He’d gone down to the training ground at five in the morning — officially to double-check the setup for the day, but actually just because he couldn’t sleep. He looked out at the training pitch.

Through the early morning mist, he caught sight of Mateo’s silhouette, already moving rhythmically through a passing drill. He watched the kid for a quiet moment, then turned and went back inside. He’d stopped trying to prevent the early sessions. The 2% muscle fatigue reading had given him information he couldn’t use officially but couldn’t ignore either: the normal rules of overtraining simply didn’t apply here in the same way. He still worried. But there was a difference between worrying and interfering, and he’d started to understand where that line was with this particular player.

The squad met at ten for the final briefing.

Magath went through the Twente shape with the focus of someone who had been watching their footage for six days. Their 4-3-3 under Preud’homme used a double pivot — Brama and Janssen anchoring the centre — with Chadli operating as the advanced AM just ahead of them. Chadli was not a midfielder but a natural winger and playmaker, which meant the pressing came in waves: Brama and Janssen held shape while Chadli drove forward to press, and the whole midfield transitioned to attack in sequence. The danger was the speed of their counter: Ruiz on the right, Luuk de Jong on the left, both technical and fast, and Janko as the centre striker positioned to receive and hold under pressure.

”Their pattern when they win the ball is always the same,” Magath said. ”Wide immediately. Then the two remaining midfielders push into the box. That’s three, sometimes four attackers in the penalty area inside four seconds.” He looked at Per Kluge and Jones. ”You two cannot both press. One holds. One goes. Every time. We worked this in the double-pivot. Tonight it is the same principle except the consequences of getting it wrong are fifty thousand people watching it.”

Jones, with the focused expression of someone who had spent the week specifically thinking about this, nodded once.

”Uchida — de Jong is your man. He goes wide first, he’ll try the outside then cut back. Don’t give him the outside.” He paused. ”If you give him the outside, he’ll get the cross, and their forwards know exactly where to arrive.”

Finally, he looked at Mateo. ”Standard job. The relay. They’re going to press you specifically — their scouts have had two weeks to pick your game apart. Jones has your back. If Brama starts getting physical, Jones deals with it.” A brief, heavy pause. ”You don’t deal with it.”

Mateo nodded, keeping his eyes on coach.

”Remember why we’re here,” Magath said in closing. It wasn’t the usual, clinical wrap-up to a tactical meeting. ”Schalke have played in the Champions League four times. Not four hundred. Four. Tonight is what this club looks like when it’s at its absolute best. Go out there and show them.”

The player tunnel at the Veltins-Arena was longer than most, and the sound of the crowd came through the walls before the teams reached the pitch — not as individual voices but as a pressure, a vibration in the corridor, fifty thousand people above and around them.

Raúl stepped up beside Mateo while they waited for the pre-match ceremony to wrap up.

”First time?” Raúl asked quietly.

Mateo kept his eyes fixed on the pitch, watching the massive Champions League star-ball circle being laid out on the grass as the first notes of the anthem began to echo through the stadium speakers. ”First time watching it from the inside.”

”It’s different,” Raúl said, his voice level. ”It’s always different when you’re standing on this side of the line.”

Ahead of them in the line, Farfán had gone completely quiet. It was the deep, heavy stillness of a player who had spent eleven long years grinding through professional football just to reach this tunnel, choosing to simply soak it in rather than put on a show for the cameras. He’d come agonizingly close to this stage twice before — once with a club that crashed out in the qualifiers, and once as a late-season signing who was cup-tied and forced to watch from the stands. This was the first time he was walking out as a starter.

He didn’t say a word. But his hands, which usually fidgeted or gestured whenever he was thinking, were dead still at his sides.

Two places back, Jones stood with a fresh white bandage wrapped tight around a training knock on his left hand. He looked like he’d already forgotten it even existed. Instead, he was staring across the tunnel at the Twente players with a cold, professional focus — the look of a man who had been handed a specific target and was mapping out exactly how to neutralize it. He’d spent six straight days dissecting footage of de Jong. He knew the three-feint pattern by heart. He was just waiting for the whistle.

Mateo looked at the Twente players along the wall opposite — unfamiliar faces, different kit, the slightly wary sizing-up that happened between two clubs meeting for the first time in a high-stakes environment. He picked out Brama from the squad photo he’d studied: thirty-one, Icelandic, physical, the kind of midfielder who made his presence known in the first two minutes of any match as a matter of principle.

He noted the position and looked away.

The anthem was reaching its final measures. The Veltins-Arena’s response to it was significant — the crowd not just watching but participating, the blue sea of the stands visibly moving.

Raúl, beside him, had closed his eyes for a moment.

”What are you doing?” Mateo said.

”Listening.” Raúl opened his eyes. ”I’ve heard this anthem forty-seven times. It sounds different every time.”

Mateo just listened. The horns were building, the thunder of the tympani rolling underneath it all — the whole track engineered for the sole purpose of letting everyone know that whatever happened next mattered.

His mind drifted back to what Farfán had muttered to him that morning, back at the training ground in the cold October dark: You play the way I imagined playing when I was ten years old. The Champions League was exactly what Farfán had been dreaming about back then.

The referee glanced down, checking his watch.

Ahead of him, the line finally began to move.
