Football: Maxed Out The Wrong Stat

Mateo was already on the pitch when Farfán arrived.

He’d been there since six, the stairwell work first, the bodyweight sequence he’d developed for spaces without equipment, then the walk to the training ground once it was light enough. The morning was grey and cold in the specific way of northern Germany in October, the grass still carrying the overnight damp, the floodlights on at the far end where the groundskeeping staff were working.

He’d been running the passing drill for an hour before he heard the gate.

Farfán came through it with a coffee and the slightly settled expression of someone who had been awake longer than his appearance suggested and had arrived at something. He stopped at the edge of the pitch, watched the drill for a few minutes without speaking, then sat down on the low wall at the side of the technical area.

Mateo gathered the balls into the bag and came over. He sat on the grass a few metres from Farfán, knees up, and waited.

Farfán looked at the pitch for a moment.

”I was going to say this last night,” he said. ”But I wanted to get it right first.”

Mateo waited.

”You know why I came to Schalke?” Farfán said.

”Magath’s offer?”

”No.” He turned the coffee cup in his hands. ”Because Raúl came here.” He looked at the empty pitch. ”Real Madrid told him he was done. That the cycle had moved past him, that the new generation didn’t need what he brought. He was thirty-two and they handed him a polite exit.” He paused. ”And he looked at that and said no. He came to Germany and took a contract at a team that hadn’t won a title in its history, because he still wanted to play football at a level where it meant something.” He drank his coffee. ”That told me something about what football actually was. Not the business of it. The thing underneath.”

He set the cup on the wall.

”I grew up watching Teófilo Cubillas,” Farfán said. ”You know him?”

”A little. He played for Peru in 1978 World Cup right?”

”Yes, he scored five goals,” Farfán nodded, a distant look in his eyes. ”He was matching giants like the Dutch line for line. Back then, Peru was so small, and barely had anything to celebrate on the world stage. But this man was out there in Argentina making the whole planet watch him.” He looked down at his hands. ”I was ten years old when my dad first showed me the tapes. And I remember thinking: that’s what football is. You’re good enough, the world finds out, and the rest follows.”

A bird was moving somewhere in the trees beyond the training ground perimeter. The groundskeeping staff had finished and gone in.

”I came to Europe at twenty-two,” Farfán continued. ”I’d done well in South America. I thought I was ready. I thought the part I’d missed was the stage, that if I could get to Europe I’d find out what I was actually capable of, and it would be enough.” He was quiet for a moment. ”My first club didn’t think I was suited to their system. My second club thought I was suited to their system but kept me as rotation cover. I came to Schalke at twenty-seven because Raúl was here and because the tactical setup was one where someone like me had a role.” He said it all without particular feeling, the way someone stated facts about a journey they’d had time to understand. ”I play when the formation suits me and sit when it doesn’t. That’s eleven years of professional football.”

He looked at Mateo.

”You’re seventeen,” Farfán said. ”And you play the way I imagined playing when I was watching Cubillas with my father. That certainty about where the ball is going. That complete confidence that what you see in the space is real, that the pass is going to arrive, that the run will happen because you’ve already decided it will.” He paused. ”I’ve met two players in my career who had it naturally. Just two. One of them went to a big club at nineteen because a manager saw him in one good season and wanted him immediately. He sat on the bench for two years waiting for an injury to open a slot. He came back from those two years a different kind of player. More patient. More careful.” He held Mateo’s gaze. ”Less certain. That certainty, once you start accommodating yourself to not playing, once you start making your game smaller to fit the space you’re allowed, it doesn’t come back the same way.”

Mateo said nothing.

”The other one,” Farfán said, ”stayed where he was until he was ready. Played every week at a level slightly below his best, developed properly, arrived at his next club knowing exactly what he could do.” He paused. ”He’s at Barcelona now.”

He picked up his coffee again.

”I’m not telling you to stay at Schalke,” Farfán said. ”I’m not telling you anything about what Magath wants or what the contract should say. That’s not my business.” He looked at the pitch. ”What I’m telling you is that whatever you’ve been doing at five in the morning — it’s working. You’re better than you were three weeks ago. Not visibly better in the way that shows up on a broadcast. Actually better. The decisions are faster. The touches are more controlled. The picture you’re reading on the pitch is wider than it was.” He looked at Mateo. ”Don’t trade that for a squad number at a club where you’ll spend eighteen months trying to justify your place to a manager who bought you on potential and needs to see you prove it before he’ll trust you.”

Mateo was quiet for a moment.

”I’m not going to United,” he said, his voice flat. ”Not this season.”

”I know,” Farfán said.

”I made up my mind before we even sat down.”

”I know that too.” Farfán almost smiled — not warmly, but with the dry recognition of someone who had done the preparation for a conversation and discovered the other person had already arrived independently. ”I came because there was something I wanted to say out loud. Not to change your mind. Just to say it.” He stood, brushed off the back of his training trousers. ”Some things are worth saying properly even when the other person already knows.”

He picked up his cup.

”That’s it?” Mateo said.

”Yeah,” Farfán said, tossing the cup toward a nearby bin. ”That’s it.” He turned his back, starting a slow walk toward the facility.

”Farfán.”

He stopped.

”Do you know any agents? I need someone to handle this. Carl keeps calling. Bayern sent a scout. Reinhardt is coming round every afternoon. I’m trying to train and there’s someone at the gate every three hours.”

Farfán turned around and studied him with the expression of a man reassessing the last forty minutes.

”You want me to find you an agent,” he said.

”It would be useful,” Mateo said, trying to keep a straight face.

A pause.

”Or,” Mateo said, leaning back on his hands, ”you could just get a licence yourself.”

A longer pause. Farfán looked up at the sky briefly. Then down at Mateo. Then back at the sky again, as if asking the clouds for strength.

”I just spent twenty minutes pouring my heart out about something I actually thought about,” Farfán said, pointing an accusing finger, ”and your grand plan is to turn me into a suit?”

Mateo grinned. ”It was a good speech.”

”Absolutely not,” Farfán scoffed, though the corner of his mouth twitched.

He walked away.

Mateo watched him reach the gate, push through it. Then he stood, dragged the ball bag back out to the centre of the pitch, and set up the cones again.

He had another hour before the squad session.

The morning was cold and grey and entirely adequate.

He started the next sequence.
