Football: Maxed Out The Wrong Stat

The last twelve minutes played out the way the last twelve minutes of a 4–2 match usually did.

Frankfurt kept pushing, they had no other option with their crowd still in the ground and the result still something they could theoretically affect. They won corners, forced Neuer into two more routine claims, and had one genuine chance when Lord beat Höwedes in the air and directed it toward the bottom left corner. Neuer was already moving, got both hands to it, and pushed it around the post.

Last corner. Headed over by Escudero.

Fweet—! Fweet—! Fweeeet—!

Full time. 4–2 Schalke.

The away end made the noise it had been building toward all second half, the specific release of a few thousand supporters who had been holding it together through two equalisers, two red cards, and forty minutes of defensive football. Raúl raised both arms toward them and held it for a moment. His teammates came to him.

Mateo stood near the centre circle and let the moment settle around him.

He looked at the pitch - the specific flatness of a football pitch at full time, the scuff marks and worn patches telling the story of ninety minutes. He’d played every minute of it. One goal, three assists, a yellow card, a match that went from 0–1 to 4–2 and had required him to adapt his position twice against a Bundesliga side that had come in unbeaten.

Then the system spoke.

[Ding... Bundesliga Debut mission complete.]

[Completion rating: SSS.]

[Reward: Equipment Treasure Chest.]

He read it once. SSS, the highest rating the system gave.

Equipment Treasure Chest.

Not a skill card. Not an attribute boost. Something called equipment, a category the system hadn’t used before. He turned the word over in his mind. Equipment could mean almost anything in a performance system: a piece of kit, a piece of data, an enhancement to something he already had. The chest was closed until he opened it. He’d need to find a quiet moment.

He closed the system notification and walked toward his teammates.

The Bundesliga Man of the Match was announced over the PA system as both sets of players were still on the pitch exchanging handshakes.

”Mateo Silva — Schalke 04.”

Huntelaar, who was shaking hands with a Frankfurt midfielder, stopped and looked back. Pliatsikas heard it from the far touchline and jogged across. Per Kluge, already heading toward the tunnel, turned around.

Raúl found Mateo in the middle of the pitch, grabbed his shoulder, and pulled him into a proper, lingering handshake—the kind reserved for a moment neither of them would forget.

”First of many, kid,” Raúl said, his voice thick with pride.

Mateo let out a breath he felt like he’d been holding all game, a small grin finally breaking through his exhaustion. ”First of many.”

Annan jogged up, looping an arm around Mateo’s neck and throwing him off balance. ”Debut goal and Man of the Match? Some guys grind for fifteen years and never see a night like this, you brilliant bastard.”

”I know,” Mateo laughed, wiping sweat from his forehead. ”It doesn’t feel real.”

”Then make it feel real,” Annan said, giving him a gentle shove toward the traveling fans.

”Go take it in.”

Mateo looked at him. The Commerzbank-Arena was still making noise — Schalke supporters in the away end, Frankfurt supporters making their way out, the post-match PA cycling through its announcements. The floodlights were sharp and white on the pitch.

He let himself feel it for a moment. It was real. The Bundesliga was real. The goal and the three assists were real. The yellow card was real. All of it had happened and it was on the record.

Then he went to collect the trophy.

In the technical area, Magath was already moving.

Stiel Hall crossed the pitch and shook his hand with the directness of a coach who meant the gesture.

”Good match,” Hall said. ”Your kid is extraordinary.”

”He’s a good player,” Magath said carefully. ”Still developing. A lot of areas to improve.”

Stiel Hall smiled, the smile of a man who had just watched the match and found this assessment unconvincing. ”Felix.” He used his first name, which was the register of two men who had known each other a long time. ”Be careful with the winter window.” He paused. ”His buyout clause — what is it still at?”

Magath said nothing.

”I asked around at halftime.” Stiel Hall looked at him steadily. ”Five hundred thousand. Any club can trigger it directly. Bayern makes that decision before breakfast.” He let it settle. ”You should fix that before Monday.”

He turned and walked toward the tunnel.

Magath stood very still for a moment.

Then: ”Hughes.”

Hughes Yves was already beside him. ”I heard.”

”The contract department. Tonight if possible, first thing tomorrow if not.”

”Yes sir, I already sent the message.”

Magath looked at the pitch where Mateo was holding a small trophy and talking to Annan. Fifty-one thousand people had watched this match. EuroSport Report had broadcast it. The Munich Sports Daily had a reporter here. By morning, every football desk in Germany would have a file open on a seventeen-year-old from Brazil playing for Schalke 04.

And any club in Europe could sign him for five hundred thousand euros.

He pressed his lips together and went inside.

In the broadcast booth at the top of the east stand, Tom Warrick was wrapping up.

”Final score - Frankfurt 2, Schalke 4. Schalke’s first league win of the season.” He looked at his notes. ”Mateo Silva: one goal, three assists, ninety minutes, one yellow card. Man of the Match.” He paused. ”The standard comparison at this point would be to say a number - youngest this, youngest that. I’ve been cautious about those claims all evening because I couldn’t verify the historical records with confidence. What I can say without qualification is this: a seventeen-year-old played ninety minutes of Bundesliga football tonight, absorbed being beaten defensively in the first minute, adapted his position, scored a goal, created three more, and finished the match as the best player on the pitch.”

His phone buzzed. The EuroSport Report editor.

He looked at the screen, looked at the pitch below where Mateo was still talking with teammates, and answered.

”I know,” he said before the editor could speak. ”I watched the whole thing.”

A pause.

”Yes, the viewership number is real.” Another pause. ”I’ll talk to you tomorrow.” He ended the call, picked up his notes and his coffee cup, and took one last look at the Commerzbank-Arena before the lights began to dim.
