Football: Maxed Out The Wrong Stat

Mateo had changed into his training kit and was lacing his boots when his phone rang and someone knocked on the door at the same moment.

He looked at the screen. Carl, the Manchester United scout.

The knock again.

He answered the call, crossed to the door, and opened it. Reinhardt, the club manager, stood in the corridor with his professional smile already deployed.

”Mr. Carl,” Mateo said into the phone, ”I have a guest. Can I call you back in ten minutes?”

A pause from Carl’s end. Then, controlled: ”Of course. I’m nearby.”

He ended the call. Reinhardt had caught the name clearly, the slight widening of the eyes, the smile becoming more deliberate.

”Mateo.” Reinhardt extended his hand. ”Klaus Reinhardt, club administration. May I come in?”

Mateo stepped back. Reinhardt entered, took in the dormitory room, two beds, a desk, a window with a view of the car park and sat on the edge of the spare bed without being offered it.

”First,” Reinhardt said, ”yesterday’s performance. Extraordinary. The whole board watched together at the Arena. I can tell you there wasn’t a quiet moment in that room.”

Mateo sat on the edge of his bed, listening quietly.

”The club wants to look after you properly,” Reinhardt continued, leaning forward slightly. ”A pay increase, something that truly reflects your contribution to the first team. And we’d like to arrange an apartment for you. Something a bit better suited to your new role.”

”I really appreciate that, but I’m actually very comfortable here,” Mateo said, offering a small, polite smile.

”The dormitory is meant for academy players-”

”I was just an academy player three weeks ago, sir,” Mateo said softly, keeping his eyes on Reinhardt. ”I still feel like one. The training pitch is only two minutes away, and the canteen is right downstairs. I just want to focus completely on my training right now, and this really is the best setup for me to do that.”

Reinhardt’s smile remained, though his posture stiffened just a fraction.

”The salary, then,” he said. ”At least let us address that part. Your current wages are, frankly, they’re not something the club can defend publicly anymore. A figure in the range of a million annually would be much more appropriate for what you bring to the squad.”

”Thank you, that is incredibly generous,” Mateo said, standing up respectfully and gesturing towards the room’s exit. ”I’ll definitely think it over. Thank you for coming down here to tell me in person, it means a lot.”

Reinhardt recognized the cue. He stood, buttoned his jacket, and extended his hand. Mateo shook it warmly.

”If you change your mind about the accommodation, just let me know,” Reinhardt said at the door.

”I will do, sir. Thank you again.”

The door closed.

Mateo stood in the centre of the room for a moment. He knew exactly what Reinhardt’s visit had been, the club trying to create obligation before any buyout clause could be triggered. A raised salary and a nicer flat were not generosity; they were an attempt to make leaving feel ungrateful. He bore Reinhardt no ill feeling for it. The man was doing his job.

While Mateo was dealing with Reinhardt, the rest of European football was dealing with Monday.

Tom Warrick’s EuroSport Report broadcast had been viewed by the highest number of unique viewers the channel had recorded for a non-Champions League match in four years. His editor had called three times before Tom had finished packing up at the Commerzbank-Arena and twice more since. By Monday morning the clip of the La Croqueta heel-variant escape and the through ball to Raúl had been shared across every major football forum in Europe, translated into twelve languages, and discussed in threads that ranged from ”technical breakdown of the pass mechanics” to ”is this the next Xavi?”

The football world had a structural problem that the clip had illuminated neatly.

Barcelona’s tiki-taka, under Guardiola, had remade how every major European club thought about the midfield. Everyone was trying to replicate it. Nobody had quite managed it, because replicating tiki-taka without Xavi was like building a watch without the mechanism, the parts were there but the thing that made it work was absent. Xavi didn’t just pass accurately. He processed the pitch and released the ball at the exact moment the receiving player needed it, before the pressing defender had completed his close.

That quality, the one-touch circulation that kept the shape fluid and the press disorganised, was the rarest thing in football. Genuinely rare. Pirlo had something close to it and was thirty-one. Kaka had the movement but not the passing geometry. Iniesta had the technique but was fundamentally a carrier, not a circulator.

A seventeen-year-old playing for Schalke 04 had just demonstrated something similar in ninety minutes of Bundesliga football.

In Munich, Bayern’s technical department had been working since Sunday night.

Van Gaal sat at the head of his meeting table on Monday morning and watched the clip package his staff had assembled. They had pulled every available match, the two Third Division appearances, the cup match against Hannover, the Frankfurt league match and compiled the passing sequences across all four.

”Total passes across all four matches,” his technical director said from the front of the room. ”Four hundred and eleven. Of those, seven resulted in failed deliveries, three attributed to the sender, four to receivers losing their runs. Personal completion rate across all matches: ninety-nine point three percent.”

The room was quiet.

”The Bundesliga match specifically,” the director continued. ”One hundred and twenty-seven passes, one hundred and twenty-five completed. Both failures: receiver errors. His own completion rate for the ninety minutes: one hundred percent.” He clicked to the next slide — a spatial map of the pitch, showing every pass Mateo had played colour-coded by outcome. It looked like a web of red lines radiating outward from the central midfield zone, reaching every corner of the pitch. ”There is no position on the pitch he hasn’t successfully delivered to. His passes are just that accurate.”

Van Gaal had his elbows on the table and his chin in his hands. He’d been watching without expression.

”The weaknesses,” the director said.

”I know the weaknesses,” Van Gaal said. ”Defence, physical contact, aerial duels. Tell me the buyout.”

”Five hundred thousand euros.”

The room made a collective sound that wasn’t quite laughter.

Van Gaal straightened up. ”Send someone to make contact. Private channel, no press. I don’t want this in the papers before it’s done.” He stood. ”Five hundred thousand. We spend that on travel.”

Across the city, in Dortmund’s training complex, the mood was different.

The sporting director had been in his office since eight in the morning with the door closed, which his assistant had learned to recognise as a sign that something had gone wrong and the correct response was to bring coffee and not ask questions.

Inside, on the screen, the Frankfurt match was paused on Mateo’s goal, the fake shot, the ankle roll, the ball rolling into an empty net.

The player on the screen had been released from Dortmund’s youth academy seven weeks ago.

The sporting director had signed off on that decision. It had been a routine release, a seventeen-year-old who had shown some ability but hadn’t been selected for the first-team development programme. Standard procedure. The kind of thing that happened forty times a season at a club this size.

He rubbed his face, looked at the ceiling, and pressed play again.

Mateo called Carl back from outside the dormitory building, standing in the car park with his training bag over his shoulder.

”Sorry about that,” Mateo said.

”Not at all,” Carl said. The warmth in his voice was genuine this time, not the salesmanship warmth of the first visit, but the warmth of someone who has decided to be straightforward. ”I’m at the café on Wilhelminenstraße. Do you have time this afternoon?”

Mateo looked at the training ground. He had planned to be there for three hours. Carl had flown from Manchester.

”Five o’clock,” Mateo said. ”I’ll come to you.”

”Perfect.” A pause. ”And Mateo, whatever you decide, I want you to hear the offer properly this time. Ferguson asked me to say that specifically.”

Mateo quietly processed the conversation and headed out to clear his head on the pitch.
