Football: Maxed Out The Wrong Stat

The eighteen minutes after the equaliser taught Mateo something that the Bundesliga hadn’t yet.

Werder Bremen had fouled him systematically. Twente were doing something different — not fouling him, but surrounding him. Every time the ball moved toward his feet, Brama and Janssen shifted to cut the passing lanes into his position, and Chadli dropped from his advanced AM role to press from the front. Three bodies converging on the point where Mateo would receive, not to foul him but to make the first touch slow and the second touch contested.

It was effective in a way that fouls weren’t, because fouls gave Schalke set pieces and rhythm-breaks. This gave them nothing. The ball arrived at Mateo’s feet late and under pressure, the overlay showing him lines that closed before he could use them, the relay passing still working but operating a full half-step slower than it had against Werder.

Preud’homme had done his preparation properly.

Schalke circulated. The ball moved through Per Kluge and Jones and out to Farfán and Huntelaar and back inward, the familiar pattern, the possession percentage climbing again toward seventy percent. But the final third remained closed. Twente’s defensive block — Brama and Janssen holding the centre, the two centre-backs narrow, Wisgerhof and Rosales sitting deep rather than pushing forward, offered no gaps that lasted long enough to exploit.

Jurado had come on in the thirty-fourth minute when Höwedes went down with a knock to his ankle — nothing serious but enough that Magath didn’t risk it in the closing stages of the half. Jurado, Spanish, experienced, settled into the left side of the midfield three with the ease of a player who had been doing this for years and understood his role in the system precisely. He and Per Kluge made a natural pair: Jurado covering the areas Höwedes had vacated in terms of the defensive shape, freeing Jones to push higher when Schalke had the ball.

It added something to the circulation. It didn’t solve the final-third problem.

At the thirty-eighth minute, Mateo received from Jurado in the inside-left channel, two Twente players closing simultaneously. The overlay showed him three lines — all amber, nothing red. He played it back to Per Kluge, who recycled it wide to Farfán.

Farfán drove at Rosales. The Venezuelan left-back was compact and positionally intelligent, refusing to be drawn, showing Farfán inside rather than letting him reach the byline. Farfán played it back to Mateo. The overlay refreshed: still amber. No red line formed.

This was the problem Preud’homme had designed.

Against Werder, the relay had worked because Werder’s pressing left space behind them when they committed to closing the ball. Twente weren’t pressing, they were sitting. Their block absorbed possession without chasing it, which meant the relay produced circulation but not penetration. The red lines appeared briefly when a Twente player stepped out of position and then disappeared when they recovered.

Mateo played it back to Jones.

Jones recycled wide to Huntelaar.

Huntelaar cut inside — Janssen tracked him, tight, forcing him back outside. Huntelaar played it to Raúl dropping short.

Raúl held it, turned, found Farfán overlapping on the right.

Farfán crossed it early — a driven ball across the face of goal, aiming for Huntelaar’s run to the back post.

Mihaylov came and caught it cleanly.

Tom Warrick, in the EuroSport booth: ”Twenty minutes of possession and Schalke haven’t had a clear sight of goal since the sixth minute. Twente have solved the immediate problem — they’re sitting deep, denying Silva the space he needs to operate. The question is whether they can maintain this shape for another forty-five minutes, because physically this is costing them. You can see the legs tiring, particularly in their midfield. The second half will be different.”

He paused.

”But Schalke need to find a way through before the whistle, or Preud’homme goes into halftime having matched a side that beat Werder Bremen 5-1 last weekend. That will give his players something.”

In the forty-third minute, Mateo had a thought.

The relay was producing amber lines because the relay kept the ball in the zones Twente expected it to be in. Every pass was going where Twente’s defensive shape could account for it. But if the ball went somewhere unexpected — somewhere their block hadn’t specifically prepared for — the overlay might show something different.

He played it to Raúl dropping deep. Not unusual. But instead of immediately calling for the return, he kept moving — past Brama’s marking position, past the zone where Chadli expected him to receive, continuing into the channel between Twente’s last two defenders.

This was not his position. He was the AM, not a forward runner. The system didn’t ask him to make runs in behind — it asked him to be available in the half-space between the lines.

But Twente’s defensive block was organised around where he normally was.

Raúl saw him go.

He played it.

The ball arrived in the space between Wisgerhof and Douglas, a perfectly weighted pass into the channel, dropping precisely where Mateo’s run had taken him. He was there for half a second before Wisgerhof recovered.

Half a second was enough.

The overlay lit red. Huntelaar was arriving from the left, the near post, a diagonal run that had started the moment Mateo had made his forward run — reading it before Mateo had fully committed, their shared training hours making the communication instant.

Mateo’s right foot found the ball and redirected it first-time — inside of the foot, low, angled toward the near post.

Huntelaar arrived.

His shot hit Mihaylov’s legs.

The ball bounced clear. Janssen hooked it out for a corner before Farfán could reach the rebound.

The Veltins-Arena made the noise of fifty thousand people who have just seen a certain goal not happen.

The corner was played short — Mateo to Jurado, Jurado back to Mateo and the sequence dissolved as the referee’s whistle ended the half.

Fweet—!

1–1 at halftime.

Mateo walked toward the tunnel.

Around him, Schalke’s players were processing different things. Jones was touching the bandage above his eye, checking it was holding. Raúl was walking with the deliberate economy of a thirty-three-year-old managing his energy over ninety minutes. Huntelaar had his hands on his hips, already dissecting the shot that had hit Mihaylov’s legs — the angle, the contact, what he’d have done differently.

Farfán fell into step right beside Mateo as they headed off the pitch.

”That forward run,” Farfán said, not wasting any time. ”Around the forty-three-minute mark. Did Magath actually call for that?”

”No.”

”Yeah, well, he’s going to be pissed.”

”It created the chance,” Mateo countered, his voice even.

”It created a chance because Raúl read your mind and put the ball exactly where it needed to go,” Farfán pointed out, pausing as they stepped into the tunnel, the roaring stadium noise suddenly muffled by the heavy concrete walls. ”He won’t always catch that. And if he doesn’t, you’re stranded up there with nobody covering the massive hole you just left behind you.”

Mateo chewed on that for a second as their boots clicked against the floor. ”Their defensive block doesn’t have an answer for an attacking midfielder making a deep forward run. They prepared for everything except that.”

”I know,” Farfán said, a slight, knowing smirk tugging at his mouth. ”That’s exactly why Magath is going to tell you to do it again in the second half—just as soon as he finishes chewing you out for doing it without his permission.”

Mateo glanced over at him.

Farfán just kept walking, keeping his eyes straight ahead. ”Welcome to tactical maturity, kid. It feels exactly like being completely right and slightly in trouble at the same time.”

Up ahead in the dressing room corridor, Magath’s booming voice was already echoing off the walls.

He definitely wasn’t happy about the run.

But he was also loudly telling Hughes Yves to make sure it was written down in the tactical notes for the second half.
