Football: Maxed Out The Wrong Stat

After the squad session on Tuesday morning, Mateo knocked on Magath’s office door.

He’d been meaning to do this since Monday, since the café meeting with Carl and Reinhardt’s visit and the whole machinery of transfer speculation that had spent the week grinding around him. He didn’t want Magath to find out through a press release that Mateo had no intention of leaving. Magath deserved to hear it directly.

He knocked and went in.

Magath was behind his desk with a tactics board propped against the wall and a coffee that was probably its third refill of the morning. When he saw Mateo he sat up slightly, which was the Magath version of visible relief.

”I’m not going anywhere this season,” Mateo said. He sat down without being invited to. ”Carl came to say hello. I told him I’d call him if anything changed. That’s all it was.”

Magath looked at him for a long moment.

”Reinhardt also came to see you,” Magath said.

”Yes. I told him I was happy in the dormitory and I’d think about the salary. That’s also all it was.”

”Bayern-”

”They called but I didn’t meet them.”

Magath pressed his lips together. The look of a man reassembling the situation. Then he leaned forward.

”Listen to me,” he said. His voice had changed, not the tactical briefing register or the press conference register, but something closer to direct. ”I am going to tell you what I’ve been working on since Monday and I want you to hear it properly.”

He picked up the tactics board and turned it around.

A 4-2-3-1. Mateo had heard the broad outline from Jones in the corridor on Tuesday, but seeing it drawn out was different.

”Huntelaar on the left wing,” Magath said, pointing. ”Pliatsikas on the right. Raúl as the lone striker. Per Kluge and Jones, double defensive midfield.” He tapped the AM position at the top of the diamond. ”You here. With nothing behind you to worry about and two players whose sole job is to make sure nobody comes at you from behind.”

Mateo looked at the board.

The Frankfurt match had been good but the defensive burden had cost him. He’d spent significant energy tracking back, covering for the shape’s weaknesses, managing the yellow card. The 4-2-3-1 removed all of that. He’d be receiving, distributing, moving, everything his attributes were built for without having to answer for a defensive role his attributes weren’t built for.

”Jones is physical?” Mateo said.

”Yes, he’s strong and aggressive,” Magath said. ”He broke his leg before the World Cup, he’s been working his way back all pre-season. But he’s fit now, and what he does is protect space. He’s not a creative player, limited passing range, that’s why Per Kluge has been playing instead of him. But with you in the ten position, the creativity is handled. Jones doesn’t need to be creative. He needs to stop people.”

Mateo thought about this. A wall between him and anyone who wanted to stop the ball reaching him. That was valuable. That was, in practical terms, the difference between touching the ball forty times in ninety minutes and touching it sixty.

Mateo was quiet for a moment. He was looking past Magath at the tactics board propped against the wall behind him. The next opponent’s name was written at the top in Magath’s handwriting — WERDER BREMEN, underlined twice, with formation notes beneath it that he’d been working through before Mateo knocked.

”We playing Werder Bremen on Sunday?” Mateo said.

”Yes. We travel Friday.”

”Are they going to come after me specifically?”

”Every team in the Bundesliga is going to come after you specifically from now on.” Magath said it flatly. ”Werder’s coach, Schaaf, watches footage. He’s already seen Frankfurt. He’ll have identified the central weakness, your defensive involvement, or lack of it and he’ll attack through it. Which is why Jones is not optional.” He set the board down. ”But I want you to understand something. The 4-2-3-1 only works if the AM is liberated. Fully liberated. You don’t drop to defend. You don’t track their midfielders. You receive, you play, you move. If the ball is in our half, your job is to be ready when it comes out.” He looked at Mateo. ”Can you do that?”

”Yes.”

”Without feeling like you’re not contributing defensively?”

”Yes.”

”Good.” Magath sat back. ”Because some players can’t. They feel guilty. They run back unnecessarily and disrupt the shape. You’re shouldn’t do that.”

It wasn’t a question. Mateo understood that. He stood to leave.

”One more thing,” Magath said.

Mateo stopped.

”The contract.” Magath chose his words with unusual care. ”I’m not asking you to sign anything today. I’m not going to put pressure on you this week. But I want you to know that whatever the club offered through Reinhardt — I am authorised to do better. Significantly better.” He paused. ”When you’re ready to talk, come and see me directly. Not Reinhardt. Me.”

Mateo nodded, a slight smile touching his lips. ”Sure,” he said, before turning to leave.

In the corridor he passed Jones, who was on his way to the weights room, moving with the purposeful stride of a player who had been working his way back from injury for five months and had finally been handed a starting role. He gave Mateo the look of a man who understood the deal: if Mateo was in the ten position, Jones had a job. Both of them knew it.

”Ready for Werder?” Jones said.

”Getting there,” Mateo said.

Jones nodded seriously and kept walking.

The days between Tuesday and Friday had a particular quality, the compressed intensity of a preparation week where the training was pointed toward a specific opponent. Magath ran the 4-2-3-1 shape every session. Jones and Per Kluge worked their double-pivot positioning. Mateo worked the one-touch patterns with Raúl and the wide players.

He also trained alone at five in the morning, as always.

By Thursday evening, the system had given him five more points from the accumulated hours.

He opened the panel in the quiet of the dormitory room and made his decisions. Physical Contact had been sitting at 75 for a week — the gap to 80 was the target and the points were enough to close it.

[Physical Contact: 75 → 80.]

[Cap applied — further increases require Overall Rating 75.]

He’d expected the cap. Physical Contact at 80 was the target he’d set when he’d mapped out the development sequence. The remaining three points: Defence.

[Defence: 58 → 61.]

The attribute panel settled. He looked at the Overall Rating.

Up one from the Physical Contact reaching 80. The cap lift, the moment individual attributes could go beyond 80, was still four Overall points away. 75 was the number. He’d calculated it would take the rest of the season at minimum, probably longer. That was fine. You didn’t build a complete player in two months. You built the next layer and then the next.

Defence at 61 was still poor by Bundesliga standards, but it wasn’t the hopeless figure it had been. He’d stopped getting turned quite so easily. The footwork had a bit more solidity in it. He could slow an attacker down when he needed to, even if he rarely won the ball back himself. Jones existing in the formation meant the bar for what he needed to do defensively was lower anyway.

He closed the system and was asleep within minutes.

The Schalke squad flew to Bremen on Friday afternoon.

It was a short flight, barely an hour in the air, enough time to read through the tactical notes Magath had given each player but not enough time to do much else. Mateo sat by the window and worked through the Werder Bremen file: the formation, the key players, the set piece tendencies, Thomas Schaaf’s preferred patterns in the first fifteen minutes.

Raúl was in the row ahead with Farfán beside him. They’d been talking since the bus, low and comfortable, the easy conversation of two experienced professionals who’d been doing this long enough to treat travel days as rest time.

Somewhere over the north German flatlands, Raúl turned around in his seat and looked at Mateo over the headrest.

”That feeling,” Raúl said.

Mateo looked up from the file.

”In the Frankfurt match.” Raúl was choosing his words with the care of someone who knew he was describing something he didn’t have full language for. ”From the moment I received your first pass, my body was different. Speed, the decisions coming faster.” He paused. ”It lasted for the match and then after the match it was gone. I’ve had my doctor look at everything. Blood work, muscle function, the full assessment.” He turned the coffee cup in his hand. ”Nothing.”

Mateo said nothing.

Farfán, in the seat beside Raúl, had turned to look at Mateo as well. His expression was specific, the expression of someone who had been thinking about this separately and had not arrived at a satisfying answer.

”I had it in the cup match,” Farfán said. ”At Hannover. The same thing. Sharper than usual, decisions a fraction earlier, that turn past Schmiedebach--” He stopped. ”I don’t usually turn like that. Not at that speed with that timing.”

They were both looking at him.

”Good days happen,” Mateo said.

Raúl looked at him for a long moment. The look of a man who had played football for twenty years, who had trained under Capello and Del Bosque and Benitez and knew the difference between a good day and something that had no ordinary explanation.

”Good days,” Raúl said.

”Yes.”

Raúl held his gaze for another moment. Then he turned back around in his seat.

”I wonder,” he said, mostly to himself, ”if it will happen again on Sunday.”

Mateo looked back at his file.

The seat pocket in front of his face contained the Werder Bremen tactical sheet, a safety card, and a small printed menu. He looked at the tactical sheet and thought about who he was going to bind the card to on Sunday and knew that this particular problem was not going away.

Below the plane, the north German landscape was flat and brown and lit amber by the late afternoon sun.

Bremen was an hour ahead.
