Football: Maxed Out The Wrong Stat

Twente’s second attempt at a kickoff looked identical to the first.

Janko back to Chadli, the two wingers pushing immediately, Janko already turning to run before the ball had settled. Preud’homme hadn’t adjusted — the plan was the plan, and one early goal against it didn’t mean the plan was wrong, just that it needed to be executed with more care.

Schalke had adjusted.

Farfán on the right tracked de Jong from the moment he pushed forward, staying within a stride of him, not trying to win the ball but denying him the easy first touch. Per Kluge shifted left earlier to cut the diagonal to Ruiz. The shape was tighter, the defensive reaction faster, and when Chadli received and looked for the wide option it wasn’t there.

He drove forward himself.

Raúl stepped across to slow him — not to win the ball, too little pace to win the ball at thirty-three against a player twelve years younger — just to force a check. Chadli stepped past him, a clean outside-of-the-boot touch, and had a half-second of clear space ahead.

Mateo stepped in front of him.

He’d been tracking the movement from the restart, reading where Chadli would arrive if the wingers were cut off. The timing was exact — Chadli’s touch had been slightly heavy, the ball sitting just a fraction ahead of his stride, and Mateo’s right foot got there first, catching the ball cleanly and redirecting it away before Chadli could recover.

The Veltins-Arena made the sound it made for a tackle rather than a pass — sharp and immediate, the recognition of something unexpected.

Chadli turned immediately and pressed back.

He came in with his right foot, reaching for the ball. Mateo pulled it back with the sole of his right foot — Chadli’s foot passed through empty space. Chadli reversed his weight and tried again with his left, this time from the other side.

Mateo pulled back with the sole of his left.

Two touches. Two misses. Chadli’s momentum was committed now, his weight forward, and the narrow gap between his feet was briefly open.

Mateo’s right toe found the ball and pushed it through.

It rolled cleanly between Chadli’s legs.

Mateo walked past him on the left side, collected the ball on the other side of Chadli, and looked up.

The stadium was loud in the specific way it got when something had happened that not everyone had caught yet — a rolling wave of noise as the crowd in different sections of the ground registered the nutmeg at slightly different times.

Farfán was on the right, pushing into space. The overlay showed the line — amber, potential, the defensive shape not yet broken but shifting.

Mateo weighted the ball toward Farfán’s run.

He felt the contact before he heard the sound.

Brama arrived from his left side — not a challenge for the ball — a forearm driven into the ribs at full extension, his body angled between Mateo and the referee’s sightline. The contact was deliberate and clean and entirely invisible from the official’s position.

The ball rolled away. Mateo went down.

His ribs absorbed it — the injury immunity doing what it always did, the structural protection holding, but the pain of the impact real and immediate and not something he could simply stand up through without a moment.

Jones was there in four strides.

He didn’t touch Brama. He stood in front of him — close, the specific closeness of a body asserting territory — and looked at him. Brama raised both hands immediately, the pantomime of innocence, weight shifted toward the referee.

The referee came over. Yellow card: Brama.

Brama received it without particular reaction, the expression of a player who had budgeted for this and found it acceptable.

Jones looked at Mateo, who was getting to his feet. ”One more of those and he’s off.”

”Don’t let him make you get one first,” Mateo said.

Jones thought about this for a moment. ”Fair.”

The free kick came to nothing, and the match entered its middle phase.

Twente’s tactical response to being 1–0 down was not to panic but to compress — pulling their defensive block back slightly, reducing the spaces Schalke’s relay passing had exploited in the previous match against Werder, and waiting for the counter. Preud’homme had watched the Bremen footage. He knew exactly what Mateo’s system looked like and what it required to function: space and time. His answer was to offer neither while his team conserved energy, and then to attack from set positions when the opportunity came.

The midfield contest became a study in competing systems.

Schalke circulated — Mateo at the hub, Jones and Per Kluge behind him, the ball moving one-touch through the relay pattern, Brama and Janssen tracking without pressing hard because pressing hard left the space Schalke wanted behind the midfield line. Twente sat in their block, five or six players behind the ball, daring Schalke to find a way through the organised shape.

It was difficult.

Not because the relay stopped working but because the final ball — the one that actually threatened the goal — required a gap in the defensive structure that Twente were specifically denying. Mateo played forty-two passes in twenty-one minutes. The possession percentage was overwhelming. The shot count was zero.

Tom Warrick, in the EuroSport booth: ”Schalke dominate the ball but Twente have solved the immediate problem — there’s no space in behind. The question is whether Schalke can create the gap or whether Twente can hold this for ninety minutes. Realistically, their fitness over a full match is the limiting factor. But they don’t need to hold for ninety. They need to hold for the right moment.”

The moment came in the twenty-seventh minute.

Mateo received from Jones at the top of Twente’s half, two Twente midfielders closing. He played it to Huntelaar on the left — the pass firm, the line clear — but Brama had read the direction and got across early, a full-length slide tackle that reached the ball just before Huntelaar did.

The touch was heavy. The ball spun sideways off Brama’s foot rather than staying with any Twente player.

But it was enough.

Wisgerhof reacted first, gathering the loose ball on Twente’s right side and playing it immediately without looking up — Ruiz already in motion, reading the turnover before it had resolved, already turning and accelerating before the ball had arrived at his feet.

He caught it in stride and was gone.

The counterattack was textbook perfection. Four Schalke players were suddenly trapped on the wrong side of the ball, completely caught out by the turnover. The three Twente midfielders who had just been swarming Mateo were now bursting forward, exploiting the vacant space instead of chasing back. Janko was on a dead sprint right down the center, while Chadli and de Jong flew in from the flanks — a relentless wave of jerseys flooding into the Schalke half all at once.

Per Kluge and Jones were both twenty metres behind the ball.

Ruiz zipped a pass to Janssen, who had pushed up aggressively from his deep pivot role. The two of them spun a quick, slick triangle exchange, effortlessly passing right around Jones’s desperate, lunging recovery run and moving the ball before he could even dream of closing them down. Janssen slipped it to Chadli, who immediately faked a shot. Metzelder, having stepped out of the defensive line to close the gap, bit hard on the feint and threw his body into a block — only for Chadli to cleverly roll it backward into the path of the oncoming Janssen.

Janssen was completely unmarked, just ten meters from the edge of the eighteen-yard box.

He didn’t hesitate, striking it first-time. He hit it low, sending a missile tracking hard toward the bottom left corner. Manuel Neuer was already in motion; he’d done his homework on Janssen’s low-shooting habits from the scout tapes, reading the trajectory and diving early.

With a frantic, athletic stretch, his fingertips just managed to graze the outside of the ball.

It was a fractional deflection, just enough to alter the path — enough to clatter off the inside of the post, but agonizingly, not enough to send it wide. Instead, the ball ricocheted straight back into the chaos of the six-yard box at a nightmare angle.

Reacting a split-second quicker than Metzelder, Janko threw himself at the rebound, poking his right boot out to guide it goalward. Neuer, still scrambled on the turf, somehow twisted his torso and managed to block the point-blank effort with his chest.

But the danger wasn’t over. The ball popped straight up into the air off Neuer’s chest. A backtracking Höwedes arrived a moment too late, desperately swinging a boot to clear the lines—but he mistimed the connection, scuffing the clearance. The ball dropped short, hovering dangerously in the air.

And Luuk de Jong was already storming in from the flank, completely untracked, swept it in with his right foot from three metres.

SWISH!

Fweet—!

1–1. 27th minute.

The away section in the north stand made a noise that arrived half a second after the goal — the delayed reaction of a small group who couldn’t quite believe it before it registered as real.

On the pitch, Neuer lay on the grass for a moment, one forearm pressed against the turf, absorbing the result of three separate blocks that had collectively kept the ball out for four seconds before the fourth touch went in.

He stood, pointed at Höwedes — not in blame, just indicating where the clearance had fallen — and walked back to his line.

Magath on the touchline said nothing. He folded his arms and looked at the scoreboard.

Mateo stood at the centre of the pitch and watched the Twente celebration at the corner flag — Janssen and de Jong and Ruiz all there, the release of a team that had held for twenty-seven minutes of pressure and been rewarded the moment Schalke lost the ball once.

He’d had forty-two passes. They’d had six.

And it was 1–1.
