Football: Maxed Out The Wrong Stat

Manchester. Monday morning.

Carl had been in a bad mood since returning from Germany two weeks earlier.

It wasn’t the rejection that bothered him, he’d been turned down before, occasionally, by players who had specific reasons for staying where they were. What bothered him was that he’d gone to Gelsenkirchen specifically for a player in the Third Division who was developing well, had laid out a clear and reasonable opportunity, and had come away with nothing.

He sat in the waiting area outside Ferguson’s office with a copy of Marca on his lap.

The Spanish paper covered all five major leagues and its Bundesliga section was one of the best in European football journalism. He’d read the article three times already. The photo occupied a third of the page, a still frame from the broadcast, the moment just after the second goal, Mateo in the Schalke away kit, arms slightly out from his sides, expression completely neutral.

One goal. Three assists. Man of the Match in his Bundesliga debut.

Seventeen years old.

The statistics beneath the photo were specific and clinical: 127 passes attempted, 125 completed. A near 100% personal completion rate across a full ninety minutes of Bundesliga football.

The article used the phrase ”generational passing talent” twice and then, in the final paragraph, noted the buyout clause.

€500,000.

Carl had read that figure and felt the specific discomfort of a scout who has identified a player early, failed to sign him.

The secretary’s door opened.

”Mr. Carl. Sir Alex will see you now.”

Ferguson’s office was the same as it always was, the team photograph from the treble season above the desk, the shelves of trophies behind him, the man himself looking slightly smaller in his chair than he did on a touchline.

He didn’t look angry, which Carl had been bracing for. He looked interested.

”Sit down,” Ferguson said.

Carl sat.

”Coach Akama called me on Sunday.” Ferguson set down his pen. ”Congratulating me, apparently, on having a player at Schalke. I had to tell him the player rejected us. That was an awkward conversation.” He paused. ”Tell me exactly what happened when you went.”

Carl explained it accurately. The training ground visit, the conversation at the dormitory, what he’d offered: training integration with the first team, cup appearances to build experience, a competitive wage. He had believed at the time it was a fair opening position.

Ferguson listened without interrupting.

When Carl finished, there was a short silence.

”You offered him a wage and some cup minutes,” Ferguson said.

”I offered him-”

”A wage and some cup minutes.” Ferguson’s tone wasn’t unkind. It was the tone of a man correcting a tactical error with the patience of someone who had made many tactical corrections over a long career. ”He’s seventeen. He was in the Third Division. You treated it like a routine pickup.” He picked up his pen. ”It wasn’t routine.”

Carl said nothing.

”I watched the footage on Sunday night,” Ferguson continued. ”The pass for the third goal, the one the commentator said he played without looking.” He opened a folder on his desk. ”He played it to where the runner was going to be.” He looked at Carl over his glasses. ”Do you know how many players I’ve worked with in forty years who could do that consistently?”

Carl knew the answer was a small number.

”Go back,” Ferguson said. ”Take this with you.” He slid a single sheet across the desk, the club’s headed notepaper, no specific figures, just the framework of what was being offered: first-team starting consideration from day one contingent on performance, genius clause active for immediate eligibility, contract and compensation at the player’s discretion within reason, full flexibility. ”Tell him this is what I’m offering. Not a squad place. A starting position — if he can hold it.”

He paused.

”Tell him I’ll build around him if he earns it.”

Carl picked up the sheet carefully.

”And if he says no again?” Carl said.

Ferguson looked at him for a moment.

”Then he says no,” he said. ”But I don’t think he will this time.” He went back to his documents. ”Book yourself a flight. Tonight if there’s one.”

Carl stood, folded the paper, and walked out.

The secretary gave her professional smile as he passed. He didn’t notice it. He was already looking at his phone for the next available flight.

He booked it before he reached the end of the corridor.
