Football: Maxed Out The Wrong Stat

Frankfurt came at them.

The crowd’s energy after being equalised had converted into something more urgent, the specific push of a home side that has been answered on their own pitch and wants to re-establish something. From the restart the press was higher, the transitions faster, the decisions quicker. The half-second margins that Mateo had already identified as the difference between the Third Division and this level compressed further.

He tracked back as the ball moved wide to Altıntop. Annan was already across, showing him inside. Altıntop cut inside and Annan stayed with him, which meant Annan wasn’t in his natural position on the left flank, which meant the left channel was emptier than it should be. Mateo read this and drifted left to cover the space.

Altıntop found Zavilas in the centre.

Zavilas had good balance and a quick release, he played it back before Per Kluge could close, found Kittel with the return, and Kittel drove into space that Mateo had just vacated.

Kittel looked up. Played it wide to the right.

They were rotating the ball quickly, making Schalke’s shape shift again and again, finding the seams between positions. It was organised rather than inspired - Frankfurt pressing on a pattern rather than reacting to individual genius and it was effective.

Tom, in the booth: ”Frankfurt are pressing on a rotation scheme, move the ball wide, pull the winger, find the space the winger leaves. Schalke’s central midfielder is being asked to cover too much ground. Silva’s defensive limitations are a structural factor here, not a personal failing, the same gap would exist with almost any attack-minded midfielder in this position. The question is whether Magath can compensate positionally.”

[His defence is showing now. Kittel got through him twice.]

[Of course it is, he’s a seventeen-year-old attacking midfielder. His job is to create, not to stop Bundesliga players. Look what he’s already made happen going forward.]

[The formation is the issue. Two strikers and one AM means the midfield is undermanned when they press. This is a Magath decision, not a Silva decision.]

Mateo arrived late to the second challenge on Kittel, reaching him just as the ball was moving wide. Not the right position, not quick enough to intercept. He turned and tracked back again.

This was the Bundesliga. The spaces lasted half as long as he’d been used to, and the players using them were better at protecting the ball after they’d received it. He was losing individual defensive duels he hadn’t been losing against Hannover. That was the information he had to work with.

He recalibrated again: hold deeper, reduce the ground he had to cover, make himself harder to play around rather than trying to win the ball back himself. Let Per Kluge and the back four handle the containment. His job was to be available when Schalke had the ball and cause problems when they did.

Just past the midpoint of the half, Frankfurt created their best chance since the opening.

A combination between Zavilas and Kittel in Schalke’s half - nine touches between them, the kind of rehearsed sequence that came from three years of playing alongside each other, moved the ball to Yekas on the right flank. Yekas chested it down and drove at Schmitz, crossing early before the full-back had set himself. The ball rose and floated toward the back post.

Lord was already in motion. He’d read the delivery before it left Yekas’s foot, the same instinct he’d shown in the first minute. He arrived at the back post ahead of Höwedes, swung his right foot through the ball on the volley.

The contact was wrong. He caught it underneath, and the ball ballooned into the upper tier of the south stand.

A groan from the Frankfurt support.

Neuer’s goal kick. He played it long - the only option when Schalke were so deep and the ball dropped into the midfield. Zavilas rose and got to it ahead of Mateo, redirecting it to Lord who had checked back.

Lord controlled and turned. Per Kluge was immediately in front of him, forcing him sideways. Lord played it out to Altıntop on the left and the pressure was released but the attack had stalled.

Tom watched Mateo in the sequence and made a note.

”Silva was outjumped by Zavilas for the long ball, not a surprise given the physical mismatch. What he did immediately after was interesting: he didn’t chase Lord when Per Kluge engaged, he tracked wide to anticipate the pass to Altıntop. He’s reading ahead of the action. The defensive positioning is improving, even if the individual contests aren’t being won.”

Magath stood at the technical area edge with his arms folded.

He’d seen enough. The shape was creating a structural problem, two strikers meant one fewer body in midfield, and Frankfurt’s double-pivot of Zavilas and Kittel was finding the gaps. He needed Raúl to drop deeper, link up with Mateo in the half-space, create a false nine arrangement that would compress Frankfurt’s midfield superiority.

He called across the pitch.

”Raúl.”

Raúl looked over.

Magath pointed to the space just ahead of the central midfield, the false nine position. Raúl nodded once and immediately began adjusting his movement pattern.

The shape shifted without a substitution. Huntelaar held the forward line alone. Raúl dropped into the link role between the midfield and attack, creating the triangle with Mateo that would give Schalke more bodies in the centre.

It wouldn’t fully solve the problem. But it would make Frankfurt’s press more expensive.

Mateo saw the adjustment, understood it, and moved to account for Raúl’s new starting position. Now the link-up would be shorter and faster - Raúl available to receive to feet, hold, and return, rather than needing everything played into his run.

The balance shifted slightly.

Frankfurt kept pressing. The crowd kept pushing. The match was tight, contested, genuine.

1–1. Both teams still locked in. The next moment coming.
