Football: Maxed Out The Wrong Stat

Ali Karimi came on in the seventy-second minute.

Schalke dropped immediately into a defensive shape, four behind the ball, both wingers tracking back, Per Kluge sitting in front of the back four. The instruction was clear without needing to be stated: protect the result, see out the last twenty minutes.

The AWD Arena made noise. The Hannover fans found something to cheer about in the last quarter, their team pushing forward, getting the ball into wide positions, winning corners. None of it produced anything. Schalke’s defensive line held. Neuer was untroubled.

Fweet! Fweet! Fweeet—!

Full time. 4–1.

House wrapped his broadcast with the composure of a professional who had covered eleven years of Schalke matches and knew when a performance deserved to be named directly.

”One passing statistic from the first half is worth repeating. Fifty-two passes, one hundred percent completion, four assists. The next question, and it is the right question - is whether that level of play translates against a Bundesliga opponent.” A beat. ”We’ll find out Sunday.”

The squad didn’t stay in Hannover.

By the time the final whistle had cleared and the post-match formalities were done, Magath was already telling Hughes Yves to confirm the airport. Overnight flight to Frankfurt. The Bundesliga match was Sunday evening. There was no time to waste.

Bujerab was still at a Hannover clinic having his ankle examined. Magath left a team doctor with him and sent his wishes through Hughes Yves, which was more than some coaches would have done. He’d deal with the longer-term implications of the injury later. Right now he had a squad to get on a plane.

The flight was an hour. By the time the team arrived at their Frankfurt hotel and found their rooms, it was past two in the morning. Mateo dropped his bag, sat on the edge of the bed, and was asleep within minutes.

At six o’clock, his body woke him.

He lay still for a moment, the specific awareness of a quiet hotel room - air conditioning, distant city traffic, the particular silence of a floor full of sleeping athletes. He got up, dressed, and looked at the floor space beside the bed. Enough room for the basics.

He did push-ups and bodyweight work for an hour, moving quietly so the neighbours wouldn’t hear. The bar was counting. Every hour of physical work counted.

In the other bed, Farfán stirred around six-thirty.

”It’s half six,” Farfán said.

”I know.”

A pause.

”You’ve been doing this since six right?”

”Yes.”

Farfán considered getting up. He’d been a professional for eleven years and his body had a nuanced opinion about hotel floor push-ups at six-thirty in the morning after an overnight flight. He pulled the pillow over his head.

Mateo finished his sequence and started the cool-down stretches.

At ten, Magath assembled the squad in the hotel lobby. The bus was outside. Frankfurt Commercial Bank Arena, a walkthrough, some light work, the team getting a feel for the surface before Sunday.

The Commerzbank-Arena held fifty-one thousand.

On a Friday morning in late September it was empty, just the groundskeeping staff finishing the pitch preparation, the stands a series of dark red and grey tiers rising in the autumn light. The bus came through the players’ entrance and the squad unloaded onto the pitch.

Magath stood at the edge of the centre circle and watched his players spread out for the walkthrough. He noted the speed with which Mateo moved into his natural position, the half-space between the lines, the spot from which the passing angles were widest. Without anyone telling him to, he was already in the right place.

Huntelaar made a run into the channel, looked back.

The ball came from Mateo’s foot before Huntelaar had finished the run , weight correct, angle correct, landing exactly where the run was heading.

Magath looked at Hughes.

”Before the match is over, he’s more useful than Bujerab,” Hughes Yves said.

Magath said nothing. He watched another sequence, Raúl receiving on the turn, passing back, Mateo one-touching it forward into the space behind the defensive line. The kind of ball that required the defender to turn and run rather than stand and block.

He turned and walked to the technical area.

Sunday’s decision had been made.

On the bus back, Raúl found a seat beside Mateo.

”The cup match,” Raúl said. ”I watched some of it on the plane.”

”Good match.”

”Four assists in a half.” Raúl looked at him. ”You should have had five, Huntelaar missed the last one.”

”He apologised for that.”

”He always apologises. It doesn’t change the miss.” Raúl leaned back in his seat. ”If you get minutes on Sunday, send a few of those my way.”

Mateo looked at him. ”You’ll be on from the start.”

”I know. I mean the passes.” Raúl settled. ”I haven’t had a midfielder give me the ball at the right moment since...” He thought about it. ”A while.”

Mateo looked out the window at Frankfurt moving past. The river. The old buildings. The familiar geometry of a European city seen through bus glass.

”I’ll find you,” he said.

Raúl nodded. That was enough.

At the front of the bus, Magath had his tactics board open. He wasn’t looking at Frankfurt’s defensive shape, he’d been through that three times already. He was thinking about the press conference tomorrow, and the reporter who would ask about fielding a seventeen-year-old against a team sitting undefeated after three rounds, and what the correct answer to that question was.

The correct answer was: wait and see.

He’d give them that on Saturday. On Sunday, the pitch would give them the rest.
