Football: Maxed Out The Wrong Stat

Frankfurt expected a more cautious Schalke in the second half.

What they got was the opposite.

Raúl tapped the ball back to Mateo from the kickoff, turned, and pushed into Frankfurt’s half without looking back. The message was clear before a single pass had been played: Schalke were going to attack.

Mateo received and played it immediately to Pliatsikas on the right - one touch, inside of the left foot, before Kittel could close the gap. Received the return, drove forward. Lord pressed from the front, arriving with commitment.

Mateo’s right foot pushed the ball left. Lord’s weight shifted that direction. Mateo’s left foot brought it back right. Lord’s momentum carried him sideways into space that wasn’t there anymore.

Mateo kept going.

Altıntop closed from his left, faster, a better press, arriving at more of an angle. But Mateo had already seen Annan on the left wing, thirty metres away, beginning to accelerate into Frankfurt’s right channel. The lob was on, a lifted pass over Altıntop’s head before his arm could extend.

He played it. The ball cleared Altıntop and dropped into Annan’s stride.

Annan drove forward. Frankfurt’s right side had been exposed by both wingers tucking in to deal with the central threat, and the space existed for about three seconds.

It ended when Yekas recovered and clipped Annan’s trailing leg from behind.

Fweet—!

No card. Annan got up. The flow of the match resumed.

For the next few minutes the match became choppy, both teams finding and losing rhythm, fouls breaking each sequence before it could develop, the referee’s whistle becoming the dominant sound. Neither team found a clean line through. The physical contest was intensifying.

Tom, in the booth: ”Six fouls in the first eight minutes of the second half. Both teams are fouling to break sequences rather than to contest the ball. The match is being decided in the gaps between play, not during it. Whoever finds the next clear moment wins the half.”

Kittel had done his homework at halftime.

He was pressing tighter in the second half, arriving before Mateo had settled the ball, using his body rather than just positioning. He was also more willing to foul: a shirt-pull here, a block of the run there, nothing that earned a yellow but enough to make the first touch difficult.

It was working, partially. Mateo was taking fewer touches in the central zone. Several sequences had broken down earlier than they should have.

The moment came when Pliatsikas received wide right and drove at Zavilas. Mateo had dropped slightly deeper to create a short passing option. Kittel read it and stepped up close, physical contact, pressing his body against Mateo’s side, trying to knock him off balance as the pass arrived.

Mateo stopped.

One sharp, complete stop - weight planted, feet still, the kind of stop that a player pressing against you couldn’t anticipate because there’s no preparatory signal. Kittel’s forward force, with nothing to press against, carried him half a step past.

Mateo’s left foot found the ball behind him, pulling it back slightly right.

Altıntop, tracking from the flank, extended his right leg to hook it away.

The ball had already gone. Mateo’s left poke sent it forward through the narrow gap between Kittel, now off-balance on one side and the space Altıntop’s lunge had opened.

He accelerated through.

The overlay spread across the pitch the moment he was free.

Annan was on the left, overlapping. Raúl was central, pulling Russ toward the near post. Both amber. And on the right side of the penalty area - a red line, 87%.

He blinked. The red line pointed right, to the far side of the box. Pliatsikas, having recovered from his dribble, was arriving late into that position having read the break from Zavilas’s area. The right place at the right moment.

Mateo didn’t look right. He couldn’t afford the movement - Altıntop was turning behind him, Kittel recovering. Any visible look in Pliatsikas’s direction would tell Frankfurt’s defence where the ball was going before it left his foot.

He struck it with the outside of his right boot. The contact felt like a shot - power, angle, the ball deforming slightly at impact. It flew up and over Frankfurt’s last defensive line, curving right as it descended with the spin he’d put on it.

Pliatsikas was already running. He’d seen Mateo’s hip angle before the ball was struck and he’d gone.

The ball arrived into his path on the right side of the penalty area, dropping exactly into his stride. Fährmann came off his line. Pliatsikas stayed calm, waited for Fährmann to commit, and placed it low into the far corner.

SWISH!

Fweet—!

3–2. Schalke.

The away end was a wall of noise.

On the Frankfurt bench, Stiel Hall stood with his hands at his sides.

He’d watched the entire sequence. He’d watched Kittel press correctly, press physically, do everything they’d discussed at halftime and still the ball had come through. He’d watched his defensive line track the obvious run and the pass had gone somewhere else entirely.

He looked at Kittel, who was standing on the pitch with the expression of someone trying to reconstruct a card trick.

”How did he pass there without looking?” Kittel had said it quietly, more to himself than anyone. He’d been watching Mateo’s eyes the whole time. They hadn’t moved toward Pliatsikas. The pass had simply arrived.

Stiel Hall didn’t have an answer for him.

Tom Warrick, in the booth, set his pen down.

”Two assists. One goal. From a seventeen-year-old in his first Bundesliga start.” A pause. ”The last pass - Pliatsikas was on the far side of the box, Mateo didn’t look in his direction before striking it. Whether that’s anticipation, pattern-reading, or something else entirely, I can’t tell you from here.” Another pause. ”Frankfurt’s manager doesn’t look like he can tell you either.”

[He didn’t look. He just knew where Pliatsikas was going to be.]

[Frankfurt had six players in the box and the ball still found the one gap.]

[Stiel Hall looks like someone who has just been shown a card trick and asked to explain the mechanics.]

Magath, on the touchline, allowed himself something close to an expression.

The match had thirty-five minutes left. Schalke were a goal up.
