Football: Maxed Out The Wrong Stat

Sunday night. The house had settled into a deep, heavy quiet.

Mateo sat on the edge of his bed, the holographic system interface glowing softly in the dim room. Floating in the digital ledger before him were thirty-five hard-earned training points — the raw, accumulated currency of six weeks of relentless grind.

Looking at that number, he could practically feel the physical toll it took to earn them. They were the product of grueling extra sessions, freezing early mornings in his converted garage, and those quiet hours long before dawn when the rest of Gelsenkirchen was still fast asleep. Every single point represented something tangible: a repetition completed until his lungs burned, a physical threshold crossed, a measurable fraction of progress pumped into attributes that weren’t yet where they needed to be.

He didn’t hesitate.

Defense first. He dumped ten points directly into the attribute bar, experiencing the pure, specific satisfaction of watching the digital tracker climb through 71, 72, all the way up to 80. It was the exact ceiling he’d been desperately pushing toward ever since the Twente match had brutally exposed what happened when a midfielder couldn’t defend. The sound of each increment was clear and precise in his perception — a steady series of confirmation chimes that proved the grueling work had done exactly what it was supposed to do.

Defense: 80.

He moved to Kicking Power next. Five points. The attribute moved from 75 to 80 — a quieter investment, far less dramatic, but one that fundamentally altered the physics of every shot and long ball he’d strike from now on. The difference between 75 and 80 was the difference between a pass that simply arrived and a pass that arrived with absolute authority.

Then came Shooting. Fifteen points. He’d lived with being a midfielder who didn’t shoot — the running joke among the fanbase, and the specific limitation that opposing defenders had learned to exploit by actively leaving him space outside the eighteen-yard box because they knew he wouldn’t use it. Sitting at 65 had been embarrassing for a player of his overall quality. Eighty was different. Eighty meant he was a genuine threat.

Shooting: 80.

That left him with five points remaining. He scrolled through the rest — Heading, Tackling, Free Kick, Curve, Jumping. None of them moved the overall rating as efficiently as Offense, which governed his positioning intelligence, his spatial reading, and the way the system overlay processed attacking patterns in real-time. He poured the final five into Offense.

Offense: 74.

The system processed the changes, and the attribute panel refreshed.

[Overall Rating: 79.]

And then, immediately:

[Overall Rating has exceeded threshold (75).]

[Attribute growth cap removed. All attributes may now be developed beyond 80.]

He read the notification twice. The cap — the invisible ceiling that had prevented his Speed and Physical Contact from growing past 80 regardless of how many hours he trained — was gone. From this point forward, the only constraint on his growth was time and training points, not an arbitrary threshold the system had imposed.

Speed could go past 80 now. The attribute he’d wanted to improve most since arriving at Schalke, the one deficit opponents consistently exploited, the gap between his ability to read the game and his ability to physically execute what his reading told him — that gap could close.

Not tonight. But from this point forward, the ceiling holding him back was gone.

He filed that quiet thrill away and navigated over to the System Mall.

Twenty-one match points sat in his balance. The two remaining Beckham Curve fragments were listed at ten points apiece. He purchased both without any grand ceremony — the system instantly deducting the twenty points and leaving him with a lone, single point. The digital transaction felt as entirely mundane as buying something online.

Then, the three fragments finally merged.

[Ding... Skill Obtained - Beckham’s Curve]

The previously greyed-out skill card lit up from the center outward, the visual fading as Beckham’s iconic image resolved fully into view. The card’s dull border shifted, transforming from a fragmented grey to a clean, polished gold frame. Beneath the artwork, the system text flickered into place:

[Beckham’s Curve — S-Rank Free Kick. Outside-of-boot delivery with extreme dip and lateral movement. Activates from dead-ball situations within shooting range.]

He had two skills now. La Croqueta for dribbling. Beckham’s Curve for dead balls. One had been given to him by the system at the beginning. The other he’d earned across thirteen matches and an SSS mission.

With a quiet exhale, he closed the system overlay and let the bedroom fall back into darkness.

Bayern Munich was coming on Saturday. He had exactly six days to get ready.

Tuesday morning. Free training.

Magath had pushed the squad through twenty laps of slow jogging that had left most of the first-team players visibly drained — the specific punishment of a manager who had looked at his players’ body language during Monday’s tactical briefing and decided they needed reminding that professional football required physical commitment regardless of a four-match winning streak. After the laps, even Huntelaar was bent double, hands on knees.

For Mateo, whose Recovery Engine and Stamina made twenty laps feel like a casual warm-up, the grueling session hadn’t even broken a sweat. He stood there with the ball trapped under his boot, looking entirely ready to do the whole thing all over again.

”Free training,” Magath muttered, casting a look of mild disappointment over the exhausted squad before turning on his heel and walking toward the facility buildings.

As the rest of the players collapsed or headed for the ice baths, Mateo scooped up a ball and walked over to the goal where Manuel Neuer was going through his post-session stretches.

”Got time for some free kicks?” Mateo asked.

Neuer paused, looking up at him. ”You want to take free kicks?”

”Yeah.”

”Mateo, you’ve literally never taken a free kick in training. Not once since you got here.”

”I’ve been working on it on my own. Privately.”

Neuer studied him for a long, quiet moment. It was the sharp, calculated look of a goalkeeper who spent his weekends facing down dead-ball specialists like Ribéry and Schweinsteiger, and who could usually tell from a player’s mere approach whether they were the real deal or just messing around.

Wordlessly, Neuer walked over to the equipment rack, dragged out the dummy wall of four foam figures and set them up exactly twenty-eight meters out. He trotted back to his line, bouncing lightly on his toes.

”Let’s see it then,” Neuer called out.

Across the pitch, the few players who hadn’t trudged to the dressing room yet stopped to watch.

Farfán arrived first, with Jones and Raúl trailing just behind him. They were drawn by that specific, intense curiosity shared by teammates who had spent three months watching Mateo’s surgical passing. They knew him well enough by now to understand that if he was voluntarily standing over a dead ball at twenty-eight meters, he wasn’t doing it to waste time. Huntelaar wandered over next, still catching his breath from the laps, followed by Peer Kluge and Jurado. Even Draxler, the seventeen-year-old floating on the fringes of the first team, drifted toward the group, watching with the quiet focus of a young player waiting to see what his peer was up to.

Up by the facility doors, Magath stopped in his tracks, turning back around to watch.

Mateo placed the ball on the grass, finding a clean patch. He took three deliberate paces backward.

He locked his eyes onto the goal. He didn’t look at Neuer at all. Instead, his gaze fixed on the exact point in the top-right corner — the microscopic window where the post met the crossbar, the hardest possible target for a goalkeeper to reach.

A heavy silence fell over the training ground. It was that rare, genuine quiet that only happens when twenty professionals recognize absolute, concentrated intent.

Mateo took a breath and started his run-up. Slow. Measured.

His left foot planted — hard, the stud-marks embedding into the turf, his entire weight transferring to that single contact point. His body tilted left, leaning past the vertical, the angle steep enough that his right shoulder was closer to the grass than his left hip.

And his right foot came through.

The contact was with the outside of his instep — the specific area that generated the sidespin Beckham had built a career on, the part of the boot that wrapped the ball rather than striking through it. At the last fraction of the contact, the top of his instep pushed forward slightly, adding the dip that turned lateral movement into a descending arc.

The ball left his foot like something alive.

It flew past the right side of the dummy wall, screaming along a trajectory that initially looked like it was heading yards wide of the target. But then the vicious spin took over. The ball snapped back violently, the curve tightening drastically as it began its descent. The sudden dip killed its upward momentum, transforming what looked like a rising shot into a sharp, plunging drop.

Neuer didn’t hesitate. He had read Mateo’s body lean, anticipated the exact point of contact, and launched himself to the right the millisecond the ball left the grass. He was elite—arguably the best goalkeeper in the Bundesliga, if not the world—and his positioning was flawless.

Yet, his outstretched fingertips were still six inches away from the ball when it tore into the top-right corner of the net.

The training ground stayed completely dead for about two seconds.

Then Farfán broke the silence: ”What the fuck was that?”

Neuer, still sprawled out on the grass from his dive, pushed himself up onto his elbows. He looked back at the goal, then over at Mateo, then back at the net again.

”Again,” Neuer ordered, his voice flat.

Mateo scooped up another ball and placed it down. Same spot. Same run-up.

He struck it cleanly. The same lean, the same crisp contact, the ball tracing a nearly identical arc through the air. There was a tiny bit of natural variation—the slight imperfection of a human body repeating a complex motion — but it was close enough that the vicious spin, the sudden dip, and the final destination were exactly the same.

Top-right corner. Back of the net.

Neuer didn’t even bother diving this time. He just stood his ground, watching it fly past him with the expression of a guy who had just learned a brand new, highly inconvenient law of physics.

”Where the hell did that come from?” Huntelaar demanded, stepping forward. ”In three months of training, you’ve never once—”

”I’ve been practicing at home,” Mateo said. It was technically true, in the sense that the system lived inside his head and home was where he usually opened the interface.

Magath had walked all the way back to the edge of the training pitch. He stood there with his arms folded across his chest, taking it all in. Next to him, his assistant, Hughes Yves, already had a notebook open.

”How many of those can you hit in a row?” Magath called out from thirty meters away.

Mateo didn’t answer with words. He just reached down and placed a third ball on the grass.

The real answer was: every single one of them.
