Football: Maxed Out The Wrong Stat

The press conference room at Weser Stadium was not built for this many people.

Magath noticed it the moment he walked in — the rows of chairs extended beyond their usual number, additional standing space along the back wall occupied by reporters who had clearly arrived without reserved seats and decided to make do. He counted at least four outlets he didn’t recognise from regular Bundesliga coverage, the kind of press that showed up when a story had crossed from sports pages into general news.

He’d made the same decision as Frankfurt.

In the changing room, while the players were still in various states of undress and adrenaline, he’d found Raúl pulling on a clean shirt.

”You’re with me,” Magath said.

Raúl had looked at him, understood immediately, and nodded.

Mateo, two lockers down, hadn’t reacted at all. He was talking to Farfán about something unrelated — Champions League fixture scheduling, as far as Magath could tell and the press conference seating arrangement appeared to register with him as background information rather than a personal matter.

Magath appreciated this more than he could easily express. A different seventeen-year-old might have wanted the spotlight, might have resented being protected from it. Mateo simply didn’t care, which made the protecting easier and, in a strange way, more necessary, Magath was increasingly aware that the boy’s complete indifference to attention was itself a kind of valuable thing the football world hadn’t yet figured out how to exploit.

The questions started before Magath had finished sitting down.

”Mr. Magath, five goals against a side that beat you to fourth place last season — can you describe what changed?”

”Mr. Magath, is Silva now the first name on your team sheet regardless of opponent?”

”Mr. Raúl, three goals today — at thirty-three, is this form sustainable across a Champions League campaign?”

Magath answered the tactical questions directly and without flourish — the 4-2-3-1 had created the right structure, the team had executed well, credit to all eleven players and the bench. He kept his answers short enough that the reporters’ attention drifted, inevitably, toward the player who hadn’t needed to say much at all to draw it.

”Mr. Raúl,” a reporter from a national outlet said, standing to be seen over the row in front of him. ”You’ve played with some of the greatest midfielders in football history. How would you assess Silva’s passing ability specifically?”

Raúl took the microphone Magath slid toward him.

He was quiet for a moment, just the genuine pause of someone organising an honest answer rather than reaching for a diplomatic one.

”He’s a very unusual young player,” Raúl said. ”In terms of pure passing — the weight of it, the timing, knowing where a teammate is going before the teammate has fully committed to the run — I haven’t seen better. Not at his age.”

The room went still in the specific way rooms went still when someone with genuine authority on a subject said something that exceeded what was expected of them.

A reporter from the front row leaned forward. ”Are you comparing him to Zidane? To Beckham?”

”I’m not saying he’s better than them,” Raúl said. ”He’s seventeen. He has years of development ahead of him — physically, defensively, tactically. There are things Zidane and Beckham could do at the peak of their careers that Silva isn’t close to yet.” He paused. ”But in terms of the pure mechanism of passing, what happens in the half-second before the ball leaves his foot, I think he’s already at that level. I’ve never said that about a teenager before. I’m not sure I’ll say it again.”

He set the microphone down.

Magath, beside him, kept his expression neutral through considerable effort.

The room exploded into overlapping questions, which Magath ended by raising both hands and redirecting everything toward Champions League preparation — The squad’s limited continental experience, the genuine tactical challenges of a three-competition season with a thin bench. It worked, eventually, in the sense that the press conference concluded on schedule.

It did not work in any other sense.

In the tunnel afterward, Magath marched half a step ahead, staring straight down the concrete corridor.

”You said too much out there,” Magath muttered, not bothering to turn around.

Raúl didn’t break stride. ”I just told them the truth.”

”The truth costs you something in this game.”Raúl let that hang in the air for a second.

”Keeping quiet costs more.”

Magath snapped to a halt, his boots clicking against the floor as he turned to face him. ”What’s that supposed to mean?”

”It means if I’d sat at that microphone and called him an ordinary kid who got lucky twice, every reporter in the room would’ve known I was lying. They just watched the ninety minutes, coach,” Raúl said, his voice completely level. ”Your way of protecting him makes everyone think we’re hiding something. My way just lays it out there and lets the pressure off. He’s a good young player who needs time. Simple. Which version do you think actually keeps his head straight?”

Magath didn’t have an immediate answer.

”He doesn’t read the papers,” Raúl added. ”He barely reads his messages. Whatever I said in that room will reach everyone except him for at least another day, and by then it won’t matter what either of us said. The clubs that wanted him before this match still want him. The clubs that didn’t, now do. Nothing I said changed the outcome — it just made it honest.”

Magath started walking again, slower.

”Truth has a cost,” he repeated, mostly to himself.

”So does pretending,” Raúl said.

They walked the rest of the corridor without speaking.

By the time the team bus left Bremen, the first headlines were already circulating on the phones of several players who, unlike Mateo, did read the news.

Raúl: ”I’ve Never Seen Better Passing — Not At His Age.”

Farfán read one of them over Per Kluge’s shoulder on the bus and let out a short breath that wasn’t quite a laugh.

”He’s going to need that agent sooner than he thinks,” Farfán said.

Per Kluge looked at the headline again. ”Does he know?”

”He’s asleep.” Farfán glanced back two rows, where Mateo’s head had tipped against the window, eyes closed, the specific stillness of someone whose body had simply decided the day was over regardless of what was happening in the wider world. ”He’ll find out tomorrow. Or the day after. Or never, if he can help it.”

Per Kluge shook his head slightly and went back to his phone.

Outside the window, the lights of small towns slid past in the dark, and somewhere ahead of the bus, in offices and apartments across Europe that had nothing to do with Gelsenkirchen, several phones were already ringing.
