Rebirth in Famine: She Thrives by Lucky Space

Chapter 796: 796 handed in public grain

”The quantity hasn’t decreased?”

”It won’t decrease, Village Chief Li. Actually, you all should consider planting cotton too. Let me tell you, the grade requirements for cotton aren’t very strict.”

Li Yungui understood Station Chief Wu’s meaning. ”We’ve found new cotton seeds this year. We’ll definitely plant cotton next year.”

”That’s great. Then I won’t be criticized for not collecting enough cotton.”

”Alright, next year we’ll definitely support Station Chief Wu’s work. We’ll deliver as much as we can, can’t let Station Chief Wu be troubled all the time. We’ll do our best.”

”Thank you, Village Chief Li. If there’s anything I can do, just let me know.”

”Absolutely, absolutely.”

Everyone had already fed the cattle. Wei Kaiyun handed the bicycle over to Li Yungui, and the rest took the ox carts back.

Wei Kaiyun held Feifei on his lap to prevent her from getting jolted around too much. The two boys didn’t have this luxury.

Because they missed the lunchtime, even if there were restaurants, they wouldn’t have food, so everyone sat on the ox cart eating their packed meals.

Jiang Xinyu had prepared pancakes for them. Each person got a sausage, but seeing others with large pancakes, eating like this was too conspicuous.

Although people knew their living conditions were good, they hadn’t seen it firsthand. Eating like this in front of others was different.

So the three of them didn’t eat the sausages, having only one pancake each, which was already noticeable. Oily pancakes were meals rural households could only afford a few times a year.

This disparity left a deep impression on the three children. The difference was indeed significant.

Wei Kaiyun didn’t eat at all. Li Yunqiang offered him some pancakes, but he refused.

”I’m not hungry. You all eat. I haven’t done anything, no energy spent.”

The ox cart was quite comfortable, and the three little ones soon fell asleep. Wei Kaiyun let his daughter lie on his lap, and the two boys lay on the sacks.

”Xiao Wei, I can see you really treat your daughter well,” Li Yunqiang teased Wei Kaiyun with a smile.

”I love my daughter. She’s obedient and sensible. Just lovable.”

”Haha, we all love our sons.”

Li Yungui found Xing Xiangzhang. ”Old Li, you haven’t eaten yet, have you?”

”I brought some food, just had a few bites.

Xiangzhang Xing, could you help me find a vehicle to deliver the public grain? This is too slow.”

”Wu Chunshan told you, didn’t he?”

”Yes, now it’s just our village delivering public grain, the grain depot has to be treated the same.”

”Alright, I’ll see what I can do for you. I’m familiar with the military camp; maybe I can borrow a truck.”

”Thank you so much, Xiangzhang Xing.”

”No need to be so polite.” Xing Mingying picked up the phone and dialed the military camp.

After a few words, Xing Mingying put down the phone with a smile.

”Alright, they’ll come to your village to find you at five in the morning. But you only have one day, so you’ll have to hurry and transport everything in one day.”

”No problem. Xiangzhang Xing, I’ll go prepare now.”

Li Yungui went to the grain depot again, informing them that all the public grain would be brought in throughout the next day, arriving early.

”No worries, Village Chief Li, we’ll start work at seven.”

”Alright, I’ll go back and prepare.”

Li Yungui ate his pancake while riding back, truly hungry. Without waiting for the ox carts still on the road, he went straight back to the village. Once home, he directly went to the warehouse to find Li Cunshan.

”Brother Cunshan, is all the public grain ready?”

”Yes, the corn is all sorted out today as well.”

”Xiangzhang Xing arranged for a truck from the military camp; they’ll come at five tomorrow. Each truck can carry over ten tons; we’ll deliver all the public grain in two trips tomorrow.”

”Alright, everything is ready. We’re only short twenty thousand four hundred pounds of corn. Load one truck, and add three thousand pounds of soybeans and two thousand pounds of peanuts, and we can send off a truck.

The sorghum goes directly as thirty thousand pounds per truck.”

”But a thousand pounds of cotton, what should I use to offset it?”

”Same as last year, use soybeans. Still two pounds per pound?”

”Yes. Let’s load two thousand extra pounds of soybeans on the first truck.”

”Alright, I’ve got everything ready. Rest assured, the soybeans will definitely be premium quality. The peanuts may not be rated first-class. The sorghum will be fine as first-class.”

Li Yungui wanted to keep the sorghum for brewing purposes. So he preferred using soybeans to balance the request.

”Ring the bell to inform everyone, and have them divide into two groups for tomorrow. Loading and unloading the trucks will require strength, so every household should prepare dry food to bring.”

Once the two finished discussing, Li Yunqiang and his group returned. He stayed at the village office to settle accounts and, with the cash, went to the Wei family.

”Teacher Jiang, here’s today’s money, one thousand and fifty-six yuan, I’ve already recorded it.”

”Good.” Jiang Xinyu accepted it with a smile. Who knew she could one day be responsible for managing cash? In this era, it should be considered a top-tier job, right?

”Teacher Jiang, where’s Xiao Wei?”

”He went to pick vegetables, he’ll be back soon. Do you need him for something?”

”Yes, he’ll need to follow me tomorrow. My brother said all the public grain would be delivered tomorrow; I can’t handle the calculations alone.”

”Alright, I’ll tell him when he gets back.”

Li Yunqiang left happily. Although he was an accountant, his calculation speed was not quick. Having someone help was the best thing that could happen.

In the evening, at the meeting, Li Yungui informed everyone, and they were all delighted. Once the public grain is delivered, they can distribute food and money.

Everyone’s faces were filled with smiles. With over a hundred acres of cabbage, surely plenty of money can be distributed then. This year, the end of the year seemed promising.

Moreover, the status this year was better than in previous years. In summer, there was no need for overtime and extra work for weeding; the autumn harvest was easier than previous years, and the most labor-saving was not using manual labor to plant winter wheat.

The next day, at four-thirty, Li Yungui rang the big bell; all the robust workers in the households gathered at the warehouse, while the women stayed back to prepare breakfast and pack dry food.

At five minutes to five, the truck drove into the village, and two particularly spirited soldiers alighted.

Li Yungui courteously invited them to his home for a meal, but they refused, ”Comrade, we have our discipline; we can’t take even a needle and thread from the people. Please hurry and load the truck.”

Li Cunshan came over to assign tasks, loading according to what the two of them planned yesterday: first loading the corn, then the soybeans, and peanuts.

It sounds easy, but those sacks had to be carried one by one onto the truck.

Wei Kaiyun came too. He supervised the loading on the truck. Even though the truck could carry over ten tons, it had to be loaded neatly. Otherwise, it wouldn’t fit.

With many hands, the strength was great. An hour and a half later, the soldiers were responsible for braking. This time, thirty people followed them. With fewer, it wouldn’t work; they still needed to unload the truck upon arrival.
