Rebirth in Famine: She Thrives by Lucky Space

Chapter 795: 795 handing over public grain

”Uncle Wei, I also have a discrepancy of one pound,” Jianbin said.

Wei Kaiyun smiled and patted the heads of the three children.

From afar, he saw Li Yungui and Xing Xiangzhang approaching together.

Xing Xiangzhang’s smile was particularly dazzling. Station Chief Wu saw Xing Xiangzhang coming and greeted him warmly.

The notable figures exchanged pleasantries, while the strong laborers from the village began untying the ropes.

Wei Kaiyun walked to Li Yunqiang’s side. ”Is there any problem with the scale?”

”We’ve got packages that should be exactly one hundred and twenty pounds each. Once there’s any discrepancy, it’ll show on the first scale reading.

Just now, the children weighed themselves and found the scales were off by one pound.”

”I understand, it’s about to start.”

These burlap bags weigh about one pound three ounces, which means a bag should be one hundred twenty-one pounds and three ounces.

Xing Xiangzhang finished exchanging pleasantries and stood by the large scale.

People from his village placed bags on the large scale, weighing four sacks at a time.

Li Yunqiang was responsible for counting. They couldn’t rely solely on the grain warehouse’s record and needed their own tally.

Four bags should weigh four hundred eighty-five pounds and two ounces. The large scale isn’t accurate to ounces, so it reads four hundred eighty-five pounds.

Since the discrepancy was small, Li Yunqiang didn’t speak up.

The villager who carried the burlap bags earlier opened the bag and let another person check the quality.

Since Xing Xiangzhang and Station Chief Wu were present today, this person’s work was extra careful.

He grabbed a handful, tossed it back into the bag, heard a crisp sound, then picked up a grain and bit into it.

”Moisture content is fine, first grade. Appearance is also first grade.”

The bag was tied again. A person from the village carried it directly over the single-plank bridge and poured the corn kernels into the grain shield.

They were sent for inspection one by one, and when it came to the third bag, the inspector told them to dump the corn into the iron sieve on one side.

The golden corn was poured in without any husk, making it hard to find fault.

”Great, this corn was handled well. I come from a farming background, so I can recognize the quality.”

”Haha, no wonder Old Li is so confident that this year’s crop is all top grade.”

”Haha, at home, we sifted it with a winnowing basket,” Li Yunqiang said proudly.

Xing Xiangzhang tossed the corn kernel down. ”Absolutely top grade, and the kernels are plump.”

”Old Li, why didn’t you use the tractor? I heard your village is quite impressive now.”

”The tractor was working in another village and couldn’t make it back.”

”How tall is the wheat in your village?”

”About a finger’s height, waiting for rain.”

While they chatted, work continued on the other side.

The three children were curious about the wobbling plank but knew they were working and wouldn’t be allowed to play on it.

”Old Li, has your village reported the output yet?”

Li Yungui shook his head. ”Not yet. We’ll know after we’ve handed over the grain and distributed it according to the numbers.”

”Make sure to report the data to me when the time comes.”

”Alright, we estimate this year’s total yield is a third more than last year’s.”

”That much?”

”We’ve planted all the wasteland this year, so the harvest is naturally more.” Li Yungui didn’t think a third more was significant, but he was conservatively estimating, as Li Cunshan suggested it was actually half more.

”It’s already quite a lot. Ensure you provide me real data.”

”Certainly.”

”Village Chief Li, how did you manage to plant the wasteland?”

”We have rotary tillers and seeders now.”

”Wouldn’t just clearing weeds keep you busy?” Station Chief Wu asked curiously.

”We’ve developed a herbicide that eliminates all broad-leaved weeds without harming seedlings.

This way, there’s no need for weeding, making this the most leisurely year for us.”

”Is there really such a pesticide?”

”Of course, we established a pesticide factory this year. Next year, it will be available for villages nearby.”

”Really?”

”Absolutely, our pesticide factory formalities are completed, and we’re waiting to start production once things settle.”

”That’s wonderful, your village has truly contributed greatly for everyone.”

”It’s what we’re supposed to do; we can’t have everything while others have nothing. We’re all neighbors, after all. How could we not consider each other?”

”Haha, Village Chief Li is truly altruistic.”

”Station Chief Wu, don’t say that. I’m just finding something for everyone to do. Our idle time during the farm off-season is too long. Instead of doing nothing, we might as well work a bit and have a good year.”

”Agreed.”

”I heard from your brother that you have a corn shelling gadget?”

”Haha, he learned it from the kids. It’s just a miraculous machine, really useful for shelling corn.”

”Can this be used by all surrounding villages?”

”We’re preparing for that. It’s indeed handy but can only replace six or seven workers, so the demand is high. We’re getting ready.”

Xing Xiangzhang had heard about this earlier and was quite curious, but according to Li Yungui, this had been reported to the provincial authorities, awaiting results.

Xing Xiangzhang watched for a while. Due to work duties, he left but reminded Li Yungui to quickly report the accurate data.

Li Yungui understood Xing Xiangzhang’s intention, which was to set an example for their Chaoyang village. It’s actually quite nice.

The remaining people stayed to supervise. A total of eighty bags of corn, equaling nine thousand six hundred pounds, was being exchanged at one penny per pound, about to total nearly one thousand dollars.

Of the eighty bags, twenty were checked, all of top quality. If they were medium, they would be nine cents a pound, and lower quality would be seven cents a pound.

Li Yunqiang and the accountant from the warehouse verified the weight and total money. They took the voucher to collect the cash.

”Village Chief Li, are you bringing more tomorrow?”

”Yes, it’s just a bit embarrassing since the village only has three ox carts, making it a bit of a delay for you.”

”Not at all, it’s our job, we should do it. However, if you could bring everything at once, that would be better.”

Li Yungui frowned. ”Station Chief Wu, we’ve prepared all the public grain, but to transport it at once requires a truck, and I honestly have no connections.”

”Village Chief Li, you could try seeking Xing Xiangzhang’s help. I’m sure the township leader will have a solution.”

”Hmm, I’ll give it a try. For all our public grain, we’ll need at least two large trucks to haul it.

Station Chief Wu, what can be used as a measure for this year’s cotton yield, and what would the quantity be?”

”First-grade wheat, two pounds can replace one pound, first-grade corn, three pounds for one pound, first-grade sorghum, three pounds for one pound.

Your village’s cotton yield is one thousand pounds, you decide what to use as the substitute.”
