Rebirth in Famine: She Thrives by Lucky Space

Chapter 724: 724 go to the hospital

First, Zhao Xiaoli had a check-up. ”Do you want to do an ultrasound?”

Old Yang nodded. The doctor wrote an ultrasound order, and the couple left.

Now it was Ding Xiaojuan’s turn. The doctor felt her pulse and frowned, ”If you don’t take care, you won’t be able to keep the baby.

Are you experiencing severe morning sickness, or are your conditions not ideal?”

”Doctor, our conditions are not ideal.”

”Then you need to find a solution, it’s not like you can’t eat at all. The health of pregnant women is most important now. You’re still early in your pregnancy and don’t need an ultrasound, just take care of yourself. Pregnant women should eat more nutritious food.”

Chen Hui nodded beside her. He was determined that even if he had to borrow money, he would make sure his wife was well taken care of. They’ve been too exhausted lately; from now on, he will handle the work alone, taking it slow without rushing. After all, these are two lives we’re talking about, not a trivial matter.

The two only spent thirty cents on the consultation fee, leaving them with over twenty left. Chen Hui decided to buy some refined grain later; his wife should not eat coarse grain like he does anymore.

At this moment, Old Yang and Zhao Xiaoli came back. The doctor reviewed the ultrasound sheet and felt Zhao Xiaoli’s pulse.

”The pregnant woman is well cared for. Keep it up. The baby is very healthy and seems to be a boy.”

Old Yang was taken aback as he had no preference for a boy or a girl, but Zhao Xiaoli was happy. Despite her higher education, her mindset was still quite traditional, believing that having a son is better.

The four of them left the hospital. Chen Hui and Ding Xiaojuan didn’t get into the car, ”Mr. Yang, I want to go to the grain station to buy refined grain, so we won’t keep you. We’ll wait for you here at two o’clock.”

Old Yang nodded, and Zhao Xiaoli held onto Ding Xiaojuan’s hand, ”Do you have enough money?”

”Yes, I don’t plan to buy too much anyway. As long as there’s nutrition, my health will surely improve.”

”Okay, if you’re short, just tell me.”

The two families parted ways, with Old Yang taking his wife to their home.

”This is our house in the city, but it’s not peaceful now, so staying here isn’t comfortable.”

Zhao Xiaoli nodded; she was aware of the situation as she listened to the radio every day.

”Let’s take a tour of the building. Do you need anything?”

”Let’s walk there. Didn’t the doctor say I should do some exercise?”

”Okay, driving does attract too much attention.”

The two drove into the courtyard and then walked to the building.

Zhao Xiaoli just bought two rolls of toilet paper; there wasn’t really anything else she needed. Whenever Old Yang and Wei Kaiyun went to the county or city, they always brought back plenty of items, so the house wasn’t lacking anything.

”Buy some snacks; if you’re hungry, you can eat a little.”

Zhao Xiaoli shook her head, ”Jiang Xinyu made me bread, and besides, I don’t really like these snacks.”

”Let’s get some anyway; the three of Xiao Qiang can have some too.”

Finally, they bought two pounds of each of several types of snacks, as well as five pounds of brown sugar, and got two bags of milk powder; there was none to buy more of.

”Let’s check the supply and marketing cooperative and buy some eggs. You’ll need to eat eggs daily; what’s available in the village isn’t enough.”

Zhao Xiaoli had no objections, as she wouldn’t refuse when her husband bought things for her.

At the supply and marketing cooperative, they bought another five pounds of brown sugar and a bag of salt, as Zhao Xiaoli remembered she needed to pickle some vegetables.

Old Yang also bought everything Wang Shulin needed, as he had tickets and Wang Shulin had given him tickets as well.

They bought ten pounds of eggs, nearly clearing out the supply. Initially, Old Yang wanted to buy them all, but they wouldn’t sell them all to him; he couldn’t take everything.

Seeing cotton being sold, Old Yang checked his tickets. He had tickets for five pounds of cotton, so he bought them all.

They also bought three bolts of cotton fabric: one blue, one gray, and one white, which would be kept for the baby.

With too many items, Old Yang decided to fetch the car to load them, with plans to later visit the grain station to buy grains.

”Why don’t you come back with me? Just leave these things here.”

Zhao Xiaoli refused; these were expensive purchases, and if someone happened to steal them, it would be heartbreaking.

”I’ll stay. You go back by yourself.”

After Old Yang left, Zhao Xiaoli walked around again and saw fermented tofu, suddenly craving it.

”Comrade, can you sell me a jar of fermented tofu?”

”Wait a moment, I’ll ask the leadership.”

After a while, the clerk returned and told her it was possible.

No tickets were required for this fermented tofu, so Zhao Xiaoli just paid for it.

Feeling a bit tired, she squatted down next to the items they bought, when a few young people came in, all wearing belts and red armbands.

One of the girls saw so many items beside Zhao Xiaoli and immediately felt unsettled.

”Where are you from? Why are you squatting here?”

Zhao Xiaoli stood up and looked at the girl, ”I’m a youth from Jin Family Village, came to the hospital for a check-up, and to buy items here.”

”Why did you buy so much?”

Zhao Xiaoli was inwardly rolling her eyes wildly. This is what I bought myself; I paid for it with cash and tickets, what’s it got to do with you?

But she couldn’t say that, ”It’s for everyone, coming to the city once is not easy.”

”Then why are you here? Why don’t you leave?”

”None of your business!” Old Yang came in and saw someone questioning his wife, which made him furious.

Since becoming a Hw soldier, no one had dared speak to him this way. Chen Hong turned angrily and looked at the approaching Old Yang, startled.

She had seen Old Yang before and knew he was someone not to be trifled with, and now she acted humble.

Old Yang walked to Zhao Xiaoli’s side, ”Everything okay?”

”It’s fine. Let’s leave quickly.” She didn’t want her husband to get into trouble because of her.

”Okay, you get in the car first, I’ll carry the items.” Chen Hong, now timid as a quail, kept silent and shrank to the side.

After several trips, Old Yang loaded everything. ”Dear, should we buy a bicycle?”

Zhao Xiaoli shook her head, ”We don’t need it right now; let’s talk about it later.”

Old Yang had no objections and drove to the grain station.

There, the manager personally attended to Old Yang.

He ordered a hundred pounds of rice, split into two bags, and another hundred pounds of white flour. He requested twenty pounds of soybean oil and they provided a plastic oil drum.

”Let’s take the car home first, then go eat. I wonder if they’ve found meat?”

Zhao Xiaoli had no opinion; she had always been a person without her own ideas, listening to Old Yang about everything.

The two went to the restaurant and happened to see Ding Xiaojuan and Chen Hui.

Old Yang saw Chen Hui and felt more satisfied; for his wife, he bought the best, while he himself was getting a free bowl of veggie soup, eating a coarse bun.

Zhao Xiaoli sat across from them. ”Slow down, you two, and eat with us.” She wanted to help Ding Xiaojuan; she had lost a lot of weight since getting pregnant. Since her pregnancy, Zhao Xiaoli had become more empathetic.
