Rebirth in Famine: She Thrives by Lucky Space

Chapter 719: 719 Selling Watermelons

The entire morning, the watermelons were all pulled out, and it was cleaned up exceptionally well.

Wei Kaiyun looked at his own melon vines and the burned melon vines, feeling like they couldn’t be saved.

At noon, the couple took a break, and Wei Kaiyun talked about Li Yungui’s plan.

”It’s too early to plant wheat now, isn’t it? It won’t survive the winter.”

”Village Chief Li just wants to see how well it sprouts.”

Jiang Xinyu had no objections, since the village chief had decided, and it was already discussed. They were only half-experienced farmers. What they worried about had probably already been considered by others.

Chaoyang drove the tractor to the county, first going to the supply and marketing cooperative, where they wanted twenty. Then, the location was the same as last time, but this time two people shared a stall because the village only had three scales, which were all brought here.

Finally, with fifty watermelons left, Chaoyang drove the tractor himself to the city.

Because the straw mats were laid thick, not a single watermelon was broken. Chaoyang arrived at the city supply and marketing cooperative and found the manager there. They took forty of the fifty watermelons.

These ten were kept by Chaoyang. His fourth uncle asked him to try selling at the entrance of the textile factory.

Selling in the county today, if we go again tomorrow, the sales won’t be good. So, they wanted to try in the city tomorrow, and today let Chaoyang test the waters.

Li Chaoyang was a cautious child. He parked the tractor next to the supply and marketing cooperative and borrowed a cart to go to the textile factory.

The manager of the cooperative also lent Chaoyang a scale. He knew that helping others made things easier. Chaoyang arrived at the textile factory entrance just in time for people to get off work for lunch. These ten large melons sold in twenty minutes.

Those who couldn’t buy watermelons asked, and Chaoyang told them he would be back tomorrow, or if they couldn’t wait, there were also watermelons for sale at the cooperative.

He didn’t dare stay long, hurriedly pushing the cart back to the cooperative.

”So fast?”

”Yes, and many people wanted to buy. I told them to come tomorrow, and there are also watermelons at the cooperative.”

It was noon, and Chaoyang hadn’t eaten yet. His family brought him some pancakes, but he thought it best to return to the county for food.

He had just started the tractor when suddenly help arrived, all wearing red armbands.

Chaoyang had no choice but to turn off the tractor.

”What do you want?”

”Were you the one selling watermelons at the textile factory entrance?”

Chaoyang nodded. ”Yes, that was me.”

”Take him away. You’re engaged in speculative behavior.”

Chaoyang took an introduction letter from his pocket. ”Take a good look; these watermelons belong to our brigade, and we’re selling them collectively. The Revolutionary Committee has already stamped and approved this.”

Now, over a dozen people looked at each other. The person who reported did not say that they had an introduction letter, and that the Revolutionary Committee had stamped approval.

”I know you must have been deceived. What we’re doing is allowed and legal. Can I leave now?”

”No, you need to come to the Revolutionary Committee with us.” A young man stepped forward, speaking harshly.

Chaoyang recognized him, ”Tang Jianjun, you’ve joined the Revolutionary Committee?”

”That’s none of your business.” He was just tagging along with them.

Chaoyang looked at his guilty appearance and knew what was going on.

”What right do you have to take me away? I know for sure it’s because your village is jealous of us. Your father asked my father to borrow the tractor, but you didn’t want to pay, wanting to use it for free. The tractor was bought with pooled funds from our whole village, and we still owe external debts. Why should we lend it to you?

And here is the Revolutionary Committee seal. Are you denying it? Do you claim more authority than the Revolutionary Committee’s director?”

”You, you’re talking nonsense!” Tang Jianjun retorted, face flushed, but there was no confidence in his voice.

The other dozen or so people remained silent, just a bunch of young people gathered together, not recognized by the Revolutionary Committee.

Besides, no fool would listen to Chaoyang and not know they were being used by Tang Jianjun.

Someone turned and left, and the remaining people followed suit.

Now, only Chaoyang and Tang Jianjun were left.

”Don’t worry, Tang Jianjun. I’ll definitely tell my dad when I get back to let him talk to your dad about this matter. Is this your village holding a grudge against us? Just because we refused to let you use it for free.

Your petty thoughts aren’t as hidden as you think.”

Tang Jianjun’s expression changed, ”Li Chaoyang, don’t get cocky. Don’t let me catch you slipping.” He spat some harsh words and turned away.

Chaoyang spat on the ground, thinking he was a cowardly bully.

The commotion attracted many onlookers, all feeling relieved. This group of kids does nothing productive, only causing trouble, catching this or that. With that spare time, it would be better spent working.

Chaoyang started the tractor again and drove away.

Inside, he still felt very unhappy. He would definitely tell Dad when he got home. This matter couldn’t just end like this. He had expressed his guess, and with no refutation from Tang Jianjun, it must have been the truth.

Truly despised, those petty people envious of others’ wealth were no good.

An hour later, he arrived back at the county. Because there were only stalls in front of the three main factories, he headed directly to the nearest one, leaving eighty watermelons there. In just half a day, there were only over ten left.

His fourth uncle was also there. Seeing Chaoyang’s return with a sullen face, he wondered.

”Chaoyang, what’s wrong?”

”Fourth uncle, Tangjiazhuang bullies too much. Tang Jianjun, the village chief’s son, brought a group to take me to the Revolutionary Committee. Fortunately, I had the introduction letter with me.

After seeing the letter, Tang Jianjun still wouldn’t let go, so I gave him a piece of my mind, and he ran off.”

”From Tangjiazhuang?”

”Yes, my dad said they wanted to use our tractor for free, and my dad refused. Now they’re envious of our watermelon sales.

Fourth uncle, after selling the watermelons, you and Dad must go to Tangjiazhuang to settle this. Just thinking about them is sickening. They’re no good.”

”Yes, we’ll definitely go.” Tang Manyin, having been village chief long enough, can’t claim his village is under his rule alone; several people are eyeing that position.

”Chaoyang, let’s load the watermelons and head to the factory gates elsewhere.”

”Fourth uncle, everyone’s at work now, and no one’s coming out to buy. Let’s try the train station and hospital entrances?”

”Alright, we’ll all go. I’m not sure how the other two spots are doing.”

Here, nineteen watermelons remained. At the other two spots, twenty-three combined left, totaling forty-two.

They first went to the hospital. Xiang Dong drove the tractor this time while Chaoyang sat in the truck bed eating. As he ate, he shared the Tang Jianjun incident with everyone, still angry about it.
