Rebirth in Famine: She Thrives by Lucky Space

Chapter 706: 706 enthusiasm

Bundles of cabbages were placed at the field’s edge, covered with wet straw mats.

Li Yungui was really pushing himself. When he got to the township, it only took him half an hour to find the county magistrate. ”Our village is in debt right now. We’ve planted loads of cabbages that we can’t finish eating. Everyone’s reluctant to waste them, so we’re thinking of selling them in the city to earn some money.”

”Alright, I’ll stamp it for you. I’ll notify the county too, but you’ll have to figure things out in the city by yourself.”

”Thank you, Xing Xiangzhang. The whole village appreciates your kindness. I’ll head to the county right now.”

There was a bus, but Li Yungui couldn’t wait and rode straight to the county himself. Once there, it was no trouble to get the stamp.

Li Yungui bought two steamed buns from a restaurant and ate them while cycling.

By the time he reached the city, it was already two in the afternoon. He went to the Revolutionary Committee and found Director Xiao. ”Director Xiao, I’m here to ask a favor.”

”Fellow villager, what’s the matter?”

Li Yungui explained the situation. ”These cabbages can’t just go to waste, plus we can add some greens to the city residents’ shopping baskets. I hope Director Xiao can approve this.”

”So you’re Village Chief Li, huh? This is a good thing, why wouldn’t I approve? But you should ask the supply and sales cooperative.”

”Director Xiao, our village’s cabbages are too much for the cooperative to handle. I’ve already talked to the county; we’ll send some to the county’s cooperative and some to the city’s. Then we’ll sell some at the factory gates.

I know there are regulations above. But this isn’t personal profit, it’s a collective effort. Director Xiao, please help us out, the villagers work in the fields all year. We can’t just watch these cash-worthy cabbages go to waste.”

Finally, Xiao Manshan agreed and stamped it.

Li Yungui let out a sigh of relief; his hard work hadn’t been for nothing.

On the way there, due to urgency, he hadn’t felt tired. But on the way back, he was both exhausted and hungry. Still, he was happy inside. The village had a tractor, and a full load of cabbages could really bring in a lot of money.

He didn’t get home until eight in the evening. He told everyone the good news, a truly invigorating piece of news. The women picked cabbages all night, and by five in the morning, they had a whole tractor load ready.

Chaoyang drove, and Li Yunqiang along with six articulate and quick-thinking young men from the village set off.

At the county’s supply and sales cooperative, they found the director. After showing him the introduction letter, he checked everything over and found the cabbages clean and fresh, so he kept thirty bundles at three cents per bundle, for a total of nine yuan.

Li Yunqiang held those nine yuan, feeling warm inside. Making money was actually quite straightforward. The tractor set off again, heading to the city.

The city’s cooperative had a large demand, directly taking a hundred bundles at the same three cents per bundle, amounting to thirty yuan.

”Sir, we’re not selling here. We’re heading to the factory gates.”

”Go ahead, no problem. The city has a large population and demand is high.”

The cooperative was satisfied with the villagers’ sensibility, at least they showed it.

”Chaoyang, let’s head to the ceramics factory first. Xiang Dong, you stay. Leave thirty bundles with you, five cents per bundle.”

”Alright.”

The young men were eager. Who wouldn’t be happy at the sight of money?

Finally, Li Yunqiang and Chaoyang stopped near the train station. They thought it might be slow selling here, but as soon as they parked, even before unloading, a crowd gathered around.

Their speed was incredible; sixty-five bundles sold out in half an hour.

”Uncle, that was quick, wasn’t it?”

”This shows that life in the city isn’t easy. When we don’t have vegetables, we make do with wild greens, but they have nowhere to go, they still have to eat. Wei Kaiyun really has foresight.”

”Uncle, you don’t know, Uncle Wei has taught Xiang Dong and me a lot.”

”Wei Kaiyun is a good man. Alright, let’s head back and check on the others.”

The duo retraced their route, and everywhere they stopped, the vegetables were already sold out.

When they reached the county hospital’s entrance, someone waved frantically at them. Chaoyang recognized them.

”Uncle, these are from Jin Family Village. They’re here looking for Huang Ying, the educated youth, but she never even got admitted. Let’s give them a ride back.”

”Sure. Hop on, we’re heading home.”

”Thank you, we’ll get off at the township, a cart will pick us up.”

The tractor chugged along, with nine people standing at the back. This time Xiang Dong drove the tractor back.

Both felt envious; they definitely wanted to suggest buying a tractor to the village chief upon return.

When they dropped them off at the township, there was no sign of any cart, as the two villages went in different directions anyway.

Once they drove the tractor to the brigade, Li Yungui rushed over, seeing no cabbages left on the tractor, he was relieved. They had all been sold.

”Second Brother, all the cabbages were sold. Chaoyang and I sold over sixty bundles in just half an hour.”

”That’s great, as long as it can be turned into cash.”

The money from each person’s sales was handed over—one hundred bundles each, translating to thirty yuan per person. Six people made a total of one hundred eighty yuan, plus eighteen in Xiang Dong’s hands and nineteen and a half in Li Yunqiang’s, and thirty-nine from the cooperative. This outing brought back two hundred fifty-six yuan. You’d never usually see so much money.

”There’s hope; everyone can look forward to better days.

Today, we’ve bundled more cabbages than yesterday. At this rate, we can sell five more times, equating to over a thousand yuan, which can clear Xiao Wei’s seeder debt.”

By evening, everyone knew how much was earned today. There were no complaints anymore; everyone had smiles on their faces.

Wei Kaiyun only learned the next day that people from Jin Family Village had gone to the city to find that female educated youth, and it had been over half a month. Even if they found a candidate, it would be hard to locate them now.

The village was busy selling cabbages, and half of the Wei Family’s private plot was sent to Old Yang, while some were stored in the cellar. Sister-in-law Liu blanched and dried some too.

”Xiao Jiang, can we have them take some of ours to sell in the city?”

”Let’s keep ours for ourselves. I’m worried the kids might get tired of wild greens.”

Wei Kaiyun cycled, with two baskets of cabbages tied at the back, sending them to Old Yang.

Someone was cooking at home now, Zhao Xiaoli went back to work, and Sister-in-law Wu suggested light duties to avoid tiring herself.

Zhao Xiaoli had had enough of staying home, and was happy to go back to work.

But everyone knew Huang Ying was missing, Wang Shulin was so angry he slammed the table.

”Village chief, I heard a young woman killed five men over half a month ago, and the police are after her.”
