Rebirth in Famine: She Thrives by Lucky Space

Chapter 717: 717 Selling Watermelons

The wife stays home with the children all day, and Wei Kaiyun feels quite sorry for her.

Jiang Xinyu thinks it’s time to dry some vegetables, it would add flavor during the winter.

Meanwhile, Li Yungui rode his bike to the town, where there were no issues, and Xing Xiangzhang was still very considerate of him.

”Old Li, you should know, even with evidence, there’s still a possibility someone might cause trouble.”

”Xing Xiangzhang, I know that. We’ll deal with things as they come.”

”Good that you know. Your village is doing well this year, isn’t it?”

Li Yungui smiled, ”External debts aren’t cleared yet, it’s not considered good.”

”You know that this year your village has to accept both educated youths and relocated personnel.”

”I know. But it’s better not to give us educated youths; give us relocated personnel, they’re usually more well-behaved.”

”Are you serious?”

Li Yungui felt a bit stirred, ”I’m just saying, after the incident with educated youths causing murder, villagers are unwilling to accept them. I’m burning the candle at both ends.”

”Think it through; I can make things easier for you here.”

”Thank you, Xing Xiangzhang. I still need to go to the county office; the hardest is the Revolutionary Committee in the city. Also, I brought some watermelons for Xing Xiangzhang to taste.”

”I can’t accept them; the principle is not to take even a needle or thread from the common people.”

Li Yungui smiled helplessly. He took out a knife, swiftly sliced the watermelon. ”Now it’s not a gift, right? I won’t go call others, Xing Xiangzhang can notify them. I’m really pressed for time.”

When Li Yungui arrived at the county office, it was quite simple. Xing Xiangzhang had already called. He explained again, and it was very easy to get the seal stamped.

He knew that the hardest part was in the city, but he had to go. He also left a watermelon there; they still refused to take it, but he sliced it and invited them to eat. ”It’s just letting the leaders test if our watermelons meet the standards.”

Li Yungui spoke beautifully, satisfying everyone, not that they necessarily wanted a bite of watermelon, it was about the sentiment.

He rode to the city and went straight to the Revolutionary Committee. This time, the attitude towards him wasn’t good, but Li Yungui always had a smile on his face, and said a lot of nice things, describing how difficult life was for the villagers.

”Many people are dissatisfied that your village is selling napa cabbage, and have reported it.”

”Director, that’s just jealousy. I don’t believe they won’t do the same next year; they are just envy-eyed because they didn’t think of it this year. You are a good leader of the people, and I know that our village stood out this year and made others envious, but please consider our actual situation as common villagers, life isn’t easy for us.”

Remembering the years of disasters turned his eyes red.

The office staff, seeing the old-fashioned man in worn-out clothes with dust all over, and a big man actually tearing up, felt sorry for him.

So, everyone looked at the director. ”The county has already agreed, and we can completely sell in the county, but I don’t want to cause trouble for the county and township leaders, so I came here seeking the leadership’s signature.”

This was said very clearly. Everything else is agreed upon, what’s the hold-up here?

In the end, the seal was stamped. Li Yungui went out and came back holding a sliced watermelon. ”I’m not giving a gift, nor have corrupt thoughts, just want everyone to taste our labor fruits. We’ve put a full ten percent of effort into it.”

With a bright way of handling things, Li Yungui directly shared it with the few in the office. ”Thank you all. Let me thank you on behalf of all the villagers.”

Li Yungui rode his bike relaxedly, with a smile on his face, directly heading to his big brother’s house.

At this time, only the kids were at home.

”Uncle, do we still have big watermelons?” the little nephew happily asked, surrounding the two big watermelons.

”Hmm, why don’t you come home with Uncle for a few days? There’s lots of delicious food in the village now.”

The eldest nephew is already married, a niece is in junior high, and two young nephews, one in junior high and one in primary school. Although school has started, they can go home on weekends. Besides, there will be trips to the city to sell watermelons these days, so bringing them back won’t be an issue.

In the end, all three kids said they wanted to go back together.

”Dalin, let your parents know, I’ll bring them back on Sunday. You three can’t just play; bring your homework too.” Li Yungui quickly acted, fearing his sister-in-law wouldn’t like it.

Li Honglin also wanted to go back for a visit, but he had work and couldn’t just take leave.

”Got it, Uncle. Uncle, there are still some steamed buns at home, want to eat a couple?”

Li Yungui didn’t hesitate, eating two steamed buns with pickles. ”You three don’t eat now; let your aunt make something good for you at home.”

The three little ones excitedly packed their stuff, each taking a set of clothes to change into.

The eldest niece carried her little cousin on the back seat; the second nephew sat on the crossbar in front. The four of them set off.

This round trip was tiring for Li Yungui, so he didn’t go too fast. Fortunately, he had those two steamed buns; otherwise, he’d have no energy.

”Uncle, does our village have bicycles now?”

”It’s a villager’s, I borrowed it. The village has a tractor; when you come back, you can ride the tractor.”

”We heard from my dad and have always been curious about the tractor,” the second nephew said happily. He’d been wanting to go see it ever since hearing about it, but his parents had no time. The three of them wanted to go back by themselves but were refused.

”Uncle, can Brother Chaoyang drive the tractor now?”

”Yeah, and Brother Dongxiang can drive the tractor too.”

”Uncle, can I learn?”

”Not this time. Come back during the autumn break; you might not have time to learn then. Come during summer vacation next year to learn.”

”Uncle, I want to learn too,” the little nephew fussed in the back.

”You’re too short for the pedals now; when you grow taller, you can learn too.”

The older siblings laughed, but the youngest wasn’t upset; it was the truth that he was still small.

”Uncle, are you tired? How about I ride? I can ride a bicycle too.”

”No need, I’ll ride. The four of us should make it before dark.”

The journey wasn’t close, but Li Yungui persisted until they reached home, and he almost fell getting off the bike.

Chaoyang was frightened and supported his dad, took a little stroll, and only then did he feel better.

Qu Xiaoli saw the nieces and nephews arriving and immediately started cooking; only her family’s portion was left at home.

Nieces and nephews didn’t come easily. The sister-in-law looked down on the old home; they lived in the city, which was better than village life, so Qu Xiaoli made them egg pancakes with two eggs and finely chopped chives.

Finally, she made a tomato egg soup. The three children were thrilled to see a meal they rarely had.
