Rebirth in Famine: She Thrives by Lucky Space

Chapter 580: 580 building relationships

The village chief’s wife had already noticed the man sitting on the kang. She knew he was sent here because of some mistake. However, the man really was quite good-looking, even sitting on the kang, one could tell he was definitely strong.

The two covered the radishes and cabbages, and Jiang Xinyu smiled as she introduced Wei Kaiyun.

”Old Wei, this is the sister-in-law from Village Chief Li’s family.”

Wei Kaiyun smiled and greeted her, but inside, he wasn’t too happy. Why did his wife call him Old Wei? He wasn’t old, okay?

After smiling and seeing off the sister-in-law, Jiang Xinyu finally came inside.

”Wife, how can you call me Old Wei? I’m not old.”

”Alright, stop overthinking. Otherwise, what should I call you around others?”

”This? Well, Old Wei it is then.” Intimate names are reserved for private moments.

”At least now we should have vegetables to eat throughout the first lunar month, but there are still over two months without vegetables. We must think of another solution.

You know, next year we should plant vegetables, dig a bigger cellar, and store cabbages. We are sure to make money.”

”Haha, my wife’s quick thinking is really something. This indeed seems like a good plan.”

”Wei Kaiyun, once spring arrives and you recover, you can discuss this with the village chief. This is sure to be profitable, and by then Old Yang will certainly have some connections. Villagers benefit, and you gain advantages too.”

”Wife, I understand your point. Once I’m well, I’ll talk about this. I think if we dig a cellar, we can start as soon as the first month ends, since everyone will be idle. Besides, the ground is only frozen a meter deep. With more people, things get easier, and if we wait till spring, everyone will be busy.”

”Alright, you handle the planning. Once the first month is over, your leg should be better. When Old Yang comes by, we should go for a check-up at the hospital.”

”Wife, I’m not that delicate. Don’t worry, my leg is sure to heal, otherwise I’d feel guilty with how well you’re taking care of me.”

”Getting it checked is still reassuring. Now, just sit tight, I’ll go see what’s in the kitchen. Tonight, we’ll have stir-fried cabbage with meat.”

Wei Kaiyun smiled as he watched his wife’s back, feeling bittersweet inside. This is indeed his wife; she always considers him for even the slightest advantage.

The next morning, the family had just finished breakfast when someone knocked on the door. Sister-in-law Liu went to open it, and it turned out the village chief had come with several people to deliver pork.

”Village chief, my Old Wei has an injured leg, so I want to keep the pig bones. Is it alright to have the large bones, too?”

”Sure, I’ll have someone return them to you later. By ten, you should head to the team office; it’s about time for lunch.”

After giving instructions, the village chief pushed the pork meat away.

Due to her pregnancy, Jiang Xinyu couldn’t assist, so she glanced at Sister-in-law Liu, ”Sister-in-law, can you go check if there’s any work to do? It’s a bit embarrassing for our whole family not to show up and only appear for the meal.”

”Sure, I’ll go right now.”

Sister-in-law Liu had no issues because she was going to eat too.

When Jiang Xinyu entered the room, she saw Wei Kaiyun beckoning her, ”Wife, the peas have soaked.”

”Alright, I’ll take care of it immediately.” Although it’s an experiment, if successful, it’ll be a dish.

After she finished bustling around, an hour had passed.

”You think I should ask Han Xiangjun to help find carrot seeds?”

”Carrots?”

”Yes, although they have a slight odor, their nutritional value is very high.”

”Can’t Old Yang just call him back? Whatever else we need, let him bring it along.”

Jiang Xinyu had a bag of carrot seeds in her space, bought cheaply for one yuan a bag at a night market. Now she regrets not buying more.

However, this small bag should grow quite a bit. From what she remembers, it’s just a matter of leveling the bed and scattering the carrot seeds, then smoothing the surface with a rake, and finally covering with soil.

She had seen her grandmother do it before, just like this.

”I brought some carrot seeds from Russia, so we shouldn’t trouble Han Xiangjun. Things might not be calm over there.

But let’s ask Old Yang to look for some vegetable seeds, garlic chives, tomatoes, and other things to improve our diet.”

”Haha, my wife knows a lot.”

”Of course. I grew up in a rural area; how could I not know?”

”Wife, let’s head over earlier, so I can get familiar with everyone. It’s easier to get help from the village folks when you share what you have.”

”Sure, we’ll head over soon.”

The children were quite young, and knowing they were going out to eat, they were very excited. Shang Zhenkun didn’t wish to hinder them; the morning was mainly spent on learning a bit, then letting them play.

Actually, Old Yang suggested not exposing them as a family, but Wei Kaiyun was unwilling. In the past, he had no choice, but now, having reached this point, where else could things go?

He didn’t want to hide anymore and wanted to openly acknowledge his wife and children.

At nine o’clock, Jiang Xinyu dressed Wei Kaiyun in thick cotton clothing and gave him a hat.

The three children also wore the coats she had previously sent them; the family set off.

Shang Zhenkun worried Wei Kaiyun might fall; he still didn’t know Jiang Xinyu was pregnant, fearing her delicate frame couldn’t support Wei Kaiyun, so he stayed beside him.

The three kids chatted happily around Jiang Xinyu, and when they arrived at the team office, many people were already there.

Men helped with laborious tasks, while women eagerly worked; despite the over thirty degrees below zero temperature, Jiang Xinyu felt warm.

Wei Kaiyun headed straight for the village chief; to live steadily in this small mountain village, this relationship must be made good.

Village Chief Li, seeing Wei Kaiyun approaching, promptly introduced him, smiling, to the few people beside him.

Wei Kaiyun, having mingled for so many years, found socializing with people a breeze, familiarizing himself with a dozen village men in no time.

”Thanks to Xiao Wei, otherwise we wouldn’t be eating meat,” Village Chief Li wanted to give Wei Kaiyun face, hence the remark.

”Village Chief Brother, your words embarrass me. My children arrived early, and everyone helped look after them; although this isn’t a glorious matter, but I’m upright and proper as Wei Kaiyun. In the future, there will be sunny days.

As everyone gets to know us, you’ll experience what kind of people we are.

This time we’re inviting everyone to a meal, firstly to thank everyone, and secondly, so we can all get to know each other. Should my family need help, we’ll rely on everyone’s assistance.”
