Rebirth in Famine: She Thrives by Lucky Space

Chapter 574: 574 bean variety

Wei Kaiyun felt very uncomfortable being alone in the room, since his wife and children weren’t around. He wanted to go out but was afraid his wife would be upset.

Finally, he couldn’t hold it anymore and called Jiang Xinyu inside.

”Wife, I’m lonely here in the room by myself.”

Jiang Xinyu looked at the man with a face full of grievance helplessly. ”I need to check on how the kids have been studying lately. That way, I’ll know what to do in the future.”

”Wife, can we let the kids study inside the room from now on? I want to be with them too.”

”I’ll ask Master Shang first, I’m afraid it might disrupt the kids’ study.”

Wei Kaiyun sat on the kang with his hand stretched out, and Jiang Xinyu could only helplessly place her hand in his.

Accompanying him as they sat on the kang together. ”Wife, the day after tomorrow is the eighteenth day of the twelfth lunar month, we need to invite everyone in the village for a meal.”

Jiang Xinyu nodded, ”We’ll send the pig directly to the village. But our grain isn’t enough. I’ll go to the village chief’s house to ask about it later.”

Wei Kaiyun felt powerless, feeling like a useless person since everything needed his wife to handle.

A man turning out like this was surely hurtful to his pride; he had a traditional male mindset and wanted to take care of his wife and child, but things didn’t go as he wished, making him the one who needed care in everything.

”Alright, stop overthinking, your chance to take care of us is coming.”

”Wife, be careful when you go out, the road is quite slippery.”

”Mm, I’ll be extra careful.”

Jiang Xinyu looked at the time and saw it was already past nine o’clock, this was the perfect time to visit the village chief’s home, not too early, not too late.

She went next door to tell Shang Zhenkun, then wrapped herself up warmly before heading out.

Yesterday she had learned the village chief’s gate was still plugged. Jiang Xinyu thought it over and decided to knock.

”Coming, coming.”

A middle-aged woman opened the door, and seeing a well-dressed woman outside, instantly realized it was the people who had come yesterday.

”Are you Comrade Xiao Jiang? Please come in quickly.”

”Thank you, sister-in-law, I’m here to discuss something with the village chief.”

”He’s inside, come in quickly. You still haven’t acclimated to the weather here, have you? It’s too cold outside.”

”Yes, it’s so cold, it feels like wearing such thick clothes doesn’t help.”

The two women chatted as they entered the house.

”Comrade Xiao Jiang, do you have something to discuss?”

Village Chief Li, having heard the commotion, got off the kang.

”Village Chief Li, I’m just here to ask about the meal the day after tomorrow, should we prepare the grains? If so, I’ll have to buy them in the village, as we don’t have enough at home.”

”No need for the grains, the team has them.”

”Alright, the pork is at our home, so when should I bring it over?”

”I’ll have someone come to carry it from your house on the eighteenth. Your home has the elderly and the young, and someone who isn’t well.”

Jiang Xinyu nodded with a smile, ”Thank you so much, Village Chief, I understand. Is there anything else that needs preparing? I still have a few dozen jin of soybeans. Should we make some tofu or something? Except I don’t know how to make it.”

”You have soybeans?”

”Yes, I brought these back from abroad.”

”How’s the yield?” Village Chief Li perked up immediately. The village also grows soybeans, but they are several generations old seeds, yielding about a hundred jin per mu, barely worth the effort.

”I tried, and it’s okay, yielding just under three hundred jin per mu.”

”Come on, let me see the soybeans at your place, how much do you have?”

Jiang Xinyu immediately understood Village Chief Li’s intention.

”Village Chief, I have two and a half bags, probably less than a hundred jin.

But you don’t need much to use these soybeans as seeds, a hundred jin might plant forty to fifty mu.”

”That’s great, let me go see. If the soybean quality is good, the village will trade with you, rest assured you won’t be shortchanged.”

Jiang Xinyu noticed that Village Chief Li spoke frankly, nodded with a smile, and the two returned to her home together.

She led Village Chief Li directly to her room, here it’s like this, no distinction between bedroom and living room.

Seeing Village Chief Li come in, Wei Kaiyun smiled and sat up, inviting him to sit down.

Jiang Xinyu went next door to take off her coat, then went to the side room to carry half a bag of soybeans back to the room.

By that time, Village Chief Li was already talking with Wei Kaiyun about the soybeans.

After setting it down, Jiang Xinyu immediately opened the bag, ”Village Chief Li, check if these soybeans are okay?”

”Good, very good. These soybean grains are much bigger than ours, two of these are as big as three of ours.”

Wei Kaiyun, sitting on the kang, smiled and said, ”Village Chief Li, if that’s the case, we’ll donate these soybeans to the village as a contribution since we are villagers here now.”

Jiang Xinyu completely agreed with Wei Kaiyun’s words, these soybeans could greatly benefit their life in the village.

”There’s another half bag, I’ll bring it over.”

Some matters are better handled by men, she was no longer living alone with their child.

Village Chief Li thought for a moment, ”Alright, I understand what you mean. Rest assured, I’ll make it clear to everyone.”

”Thank you, Village Chief Li. If there’s ever anything you need from our family, just let us know directly. We should still have some wheat seeds.”

”We have the seeds too, Old Yang gave them, saying they were brought from abroad.

By the way, Old Yang mentioned they were brought back by Ms. Jiang, could it be your wife?” Village Chief Li asked in surprise.

Wei Kaiyun still smiled warmly, ”Yes, it was my wife who brought them back.”

”Ah! I should have realized it earlier, just now Comrade Xiao Jiang said these soybeans were brought from abroad.

Comrade Xiao Jiang really is quite capable, even as a woman, she dared to go abroad.”

Hearing others praise his wife made Wei Kaiyun’s pride swell, after all, she was his wife.

At this time, Jiang Xinyu came in, putting the bags together.

Village Chief Li said a few more words, then left happily carrying two half bags of soybeans, heading straight to Captain’s house, where the two looked at the soybeans again.

”This is really good stuff. Excellent.” Li Cunshan smiled broadly, looking at the soybeans in his palm.

”Yes, the whole family is sensible, donating the beans directly to our village.”

”Then at the meal the day after tomorrow, explain it to everyone. We must let them know what’s going on.”

”Mm, you’ll speak then.”

”Okay, by the way, will the village cultivate these beans?”

”Yes, we must do that. If there’s a good harvest next year, we’ll distribute them.”

”Alright, let’s send them to the warehouse, hang them directly to prevent rats from damaging them.”

”Alright, let’s go. You don’t know, the wheat seeds were also brought from abroad by that woman, she really is capable.”

”Really? I thought it was a man. I heard this Comrade Xiao Jiang is a university student, right? Otherwise, we should ask her to teach the children in the village, we can’t waste such a good resource.”
