Rebirth in Famine: She Thrives by Lucky Space

Chapter 578: 578 deliver New Year goods

Jiang Xinyu also didn’t go inside, after all, Old Yang might talk about things between them, which she didn’t want to know and was unwilling to know.

However, she knew Wei Kaiyun wasn’t in a hurry to make a comeback now, which was enough; once this hurdle was over, no matter what job he pursued, as long as he didn’t commit any crimes, there wouldn’t be any issues.

She could only accompany the two young ones to Master Shang’s room to sit and wait. After all, since they were still there, if she went over to tidy up the things they just delivered, it would appear a bit petty.

At this moment, Sister-in-law Liu came over, ”Xiao Jiang, what are we making for lunch?”

”Let’s have Old Yang stay for lunch. I’ll go to the kitchen with you, and you assist me. You two comrades make yourselves comfortable and don’t be too restrained.”

After exchanging some polite remarks, they headed to the kitchen.

Taking a butcher knife, she went to the side room and cut off a large piece of meat weighing around five to six pounds.

For lunch, she planned to make red-cooked pork, and the seafood could only be soaked in warm water to soften.

Sister-in-law Liu watched Jiang Xinyu expertly simmer the meat, thinking she must learn more from her in the future, since the host was so adept at cooking.

After the red-cooked pork went into the pot, Sister-in-law Liu lit another stove and started to scoop rice. Since there were many people, and all of them had good appetites, Jiang Xinyu put five pounds of rice.

At this point, the two young ones came in, ”We can help butcher the pig.” Feeling embarrassed just sitting around while eating someone’s food.

”That would be great, but there’s only a butcher knife at home.”

”No problem, we can handle this job.”

Jiang Xinyu took the two to the side room, ”Don’t worry about the previous pig, someone will take it tomorrow. Please help me butcher the one brought today and leave more meat on the ribs, the kids love stewed ribs.”

”Sister, in this bag are pig offal; please find a basin for me, and I’ll help wash them.”

”Alright, thank you so much.”

After instructing them, she returned to inform Sister-in-law Liu to send hot water to the young man washing pig offal outside, otherwise it would be too cold. Sister-in-law Liu lit up another stove.

Jiang Xinyu was a bit worried; there were only a few cabbages at home, and they were all frozen, few potatoes, and a few squashes, which seemed too little.

After thinking, she decided to stew some cabbage vermicelli with the meat broth from the red-cooked pork, which should be delicious.

At this moment, taking out other dishes wasn’t realistic.

No, she needed to find a way to buy more cabbage or something; otherwise, how could she go through a winter without vegetables?

But with only two dishes, it felt a bit scant, so she considered cooking egg custard with rice water, and stir-fried peanuts. That would suffice.

Sister-in-law Liu was responsible for the fire, but Jiang Xinyu still reminded her to keep an eye out; in two months, becoming bent would be strenuous, and she would be the main force in the kitchen.

”Xiao Jiang, don’t worry; I’ve got it.”

”Sister-in-law Liu, I’m four months pregnant; you’ll need to get the hang of these tasks soon, as I won’t be able to do much.”

”Four months already? Can’t tell at all, well, it’s because of the thick clothes.”

Sister-in-law Liu truly envied Xiao Jiang; she seemed young, yet already had three kids.

She subconsciously touched her own belly; her mother-in-law scolded her as a hen that doesn’t lay eggs, but without a man, how could she get pregnant?

A woman isn’t complete without having a child, but given her situation, how could she find a man? How to have a child?

After an hour and a half, all the dishes were served, and there were two tables today, eating in two rooms, mainly because there were many people and small tables.

Jiang Xinyu placed the table inside the room, directly on the kang bed; no choice given the circumstances, the floor was too cold, plus Wei Kaiyun’s leg wasn’t good, so now she didn’t mind the lack of hygiene.

”Xiao Jiang, this red-cooked pork looks so appetizing.”

”There’s plenty today, eat till you’re full.”

Five men sat at one table, and Jiang Xinyu and Sister-in-law Liu ate with three kids in another room.

The dishes were the same though, just a matter of portion, with the big eaters at the men’s table.

The kids hadn’t eaten egg custard for a long time, so they devoured it the fastest.

”Aunt Jiang, living with you is really great,” Han Jianbin complimented.

”Tomorrow, we’ll have egg custard again. As long as you like it, that’s all that matters.”

The men enjoyed a bit of liquor, except for Wei Kaiyun. With each bite of meat and sip of wine, Old Yang grinned.

”Xiao Wei, your wife truly has a knack for cooking. You wouldn’t know, after I split from you and came here, there was a long time when nothing tasted good.”

”When are you coming over before New Year?” Wei Kaiyun loved when others praised his wife.

”On the twenty-eighth, I have to leave on the second day of New Year. That place can’t be without someone.”

Wei Kaiyun nodded; he understood. Old Yang really wasn’t having it easy. Likely, Old Yang had found someone to cover for him during these holidays, otherwise it wouldn’t have been possible to come.

Jiang Xinyu watched the kids munching happily, feeling satisfied.

She knew she spoiled the children too much, but she didn’t want to be like others; she had the resources, so she ensured the kids ate well.

Jiang Xinyu noticed Sister-in-law Liu cautiously eating, ”You don’t have to be so polite; whatever is cooked, we all eat together, and everyone eats the same.”

Sister-in-law Liu nodded with tears; she’d never eaten such food before, so she felt a bit awkward and restrained, not daring to reach for the dishes.

Jiang Xinyu picked up two pieces of red-cooked pork and urged her to eat.

The battle capacity at their table wasn’t great, so they transferred the leftover peanuts to the other table.

After the meal, Old Yang and the three left by car.

Jiang Xinyu asked the kids to sleep as there was class in the afternoon and they needed to be energetic.

After seeing Old Yang off, Jiang Xinyu went to the side room to sort through today’s delivered items again; still no vegetables. People might not care for these now, but Jiang Xinyu insisted on having vegetables every day.

It would be wise to ask the village head for advice.

After tidying up, she returned to the room only to find Wei Kaiyun listening to the radio.

”Wifey, don’t wear yourself out.”

”What’s tiring about it? By the way, I want to visit the village head to ask, we have no vegetables at home.”

”Wifey, let them handle the strenuous work; don’t exert yourself.”

”I know, if the village can sell them, that would be great.”

In the afternoon, Jiang Xinyu and Sister-in-law Liu went together to the village head’s house, warmly welcomed by his wife.

”Big sister-in-law, I just wanted to ask where I could buy some cabbage or something, as we have nothing at home.”

”Cabbage? I’ll ask around the village tomorrow and see who has some.”
