Ms. Diviner: The Prodigal Daughter's Return

Chapter 372: 372 choose at will

”You wait outside for me,” Mu Hanyan said to Huayue and Zirong.

The Great Elder only said she could choose any reward from the Treasure Vault but did not mention others, so Housekeeper Geng’s actions could not really be considered as making things difficult.

Huayue and Zirong nodded and promptly left the courtyard. Although they had only been with the Mu Family for a few months, they knew that the Treasure Vault was one of the forbidden areas of the family. If anything happened in the future, it would be difficult to clarify under dubious circumstances, so it was better to stay away respectfully.

Mu Hanyan alone pushed open the large door and entered a long, narrow corridor. The passage was so narrow that only two people could walk side by side. As soon as she stepped inside, the door closed behind her, plunging her immediate surroundings into darkness.

After a while, her eyes adjusted to the darkness, and she could see faint light streaming in from within. The narrow and long passageway, the dim light, and the hard, unpolished edges of the blue stones on all sides imperceptibly brought a sense of heaviness and oppression.

Mu Hanyan hastened her pace and quickly passed through the corridor. As she emerged, she was met with a spacious hall that came into view, but she did not feel any relief.

The hall was also constructed entirely of huge stones, each weighing thousands of pounds. Looking around, there was no trace of even a small opening for light or ventilation, adding to the feeling of solemnity and oppressiveness.

This feeling was like that of a completely sealed tomb; unsavory to say, it was solemn and grand, but putting it unpleasantly, it was eerie and terrifying.

Inside the hall, Mu Hanyan did not see the wooden racks commonly found in treasure vaults but instead rows of stone racks carved from solid stone. They were somewhat rough, but they added to the sense of weight and chill.

Rows of stone racks were strategically placed throughout the hall like a small maze. Strands of cold air seemed to seep in from nowhere, making her neck chilly and involuntarily increasing her heartbeat.

This feeling was really too much like being inside a tomb.

Mu Hanyan couldn’t help but inwardly criticize the ancestors of the Mu Family in Heishi City for constructing a perfectly good Treasure Vault in such a manner.

Taking a deep breath and slowly exhaling, Mu Hanyan’s mind finally eased a little, and she walked towards the rows of stone racks.

...

”Grandfather, why did you so easily promise Mu Hanyan?” At the same time, outside the Treasure Vault, Mu Feng complained.

He had not even entered the Treasure Vault yet, and now Mu Hanyan was getting to benefit from it—all she had to do was look and take whatever she wanted. This made him feel a severe sense of imbalance.

”I promised, and that’s that. What do you think she could possibly pick out that’s any good?” the Great Elder said irritably. He had been backed into a corner by Mu Ziqing and others at the time, and, in a moment of pique, had uttered those words. He somewhat regretted them now. But he still had power; in the Mu Family, his words might not always count, but he was the authority over this small area of the Treasure Vault. It was a promise made in vain, and he did not believe Mu Hanyan would actually gain much.

”Don’t worry, Great Elder. As soon as I heard the news, I secured all the important items. Even if she turns the Treasure Vault upside down, she won’t be able to find any notable Heavenly Materials and Earthly Treasures,” Steward Geng said obsequiously.

”Well done. I knew I could count on you not to disappoint me,” the Great Elder said, with satisfaction, patting Housekeeper Geng on the shoulder.

Only then did Mu Feng realize that Housekeeper Geng had made arrangements well in advance. He had always wondered why the Great Elder would send someone as astute and capable as Housekeeper Geng to such a desolate place. Now it made more sense to him—this was indeed making the best use of both materials and talents.
