Quick Transmigration: The Cannon Fodder's Comeback in the Era Tales

Chapter 734: Chapter 734: Fleeing Famine 39

Sun Chunfeng came over, silently shedding tears, ”Mom, Xiao Ling hasn’t woken up yet. Will she be okay? Should we take her to the hospital?”

”She’s suffered internal injuries. I’ve already given her medicine for healing. She’ll be fine after waking up in the evening. After a few days of careful nourishment, she’ll be bouncing back to health. You don’t need to worry.”

Sun Chunfeng wiped away his tears, forcing a smile, and said, ”Mom, I’ll go cut some lean meat and cook porridge for the kids.”

”Go ahead, cook more, and boil a few eggs. Each child should have two, to nourish them well.”

”Okay, Mom, I’ll go cook now.”

Geng Dalin returned with a full basket of fish on his back. Yuan Chun sat in the courtyard cleaning the small fish, working until dark, and still wasn’t done.

Just as twilight fell, the brigade leader came to find Yuan Chun and told her, ”Old Yang and Mrs. Yang have been detained. The people at the police station say it’s murder. Old Yang might face execution, and Mrs. Yang, being implicated, might be sent to a rural labor camp.”

Yuan Chun thanked him, ”Brigade leader, thank you. You’ve worked hard today. Stay for dinner tonight; let Dalin have a drink with you?”

The brigade leader waved his hand, ”Not today, another day.”

”Alright, another day, I’ll have Dalin invite you over.”

After the brigade leader left, Yuan Chun put the uncleaned small fish and shrimp into a basket, hanging it up to prevent cats from eating them at night.

The next day, Yuan Chun and Sun Chunfeng spent the entire morning cleaning all the fish.

In the afternoon, Yuan Chun fried a large bowl of small fish for the kids to eat.

The kids found it delicious, constantly saying how good it was, forgetting about the unpleasant events of yesterday.

In the evening, Yuan Chun braised two big fish, keeping one for the family and putting the other in a clay pot, along with eight large mantous. She asked Geng Dalin to secretly take them to the cowshed, ”Give these to Old Huo. He saved our two kids, and we can’t just pretend to not know. This is a thank-you gift.”

”There’s also a small paper packet with fever and cold medicine. It was so cold yesterday, he jumped into the water despite his age. He must have caught a cold. Give him one pill of each, and he’ll be better tomorrow.”

”Mom, I’ve got it.”

Geng Dalin stuffed the small paper packet into his cotton jacket pocket, then carried the basket on his back, heading off into the dark towards the cowshed.

It took a long time for someone to answer the door when he knocked.

”Hello, I’m looking for Old Huo,” Geng Dalin walked inside, smelling the scent of cow manure, but he was used to it from working farmland, so he was unbothered.

When spreading manure, he would grab the cow dung with his bare hands and scatter it in the fields.

The person who answered was a middle-aged man who, upon seeing Dalin, understood his intention. He pointed to the furthest room, ”Old Huo is in the fourth room, but he’s got a cold. He’s been feverish since last night, burning up for a whole day and night without eating anything.”

Geng Dalin was anxious, ”Why didn’t you inform the brigade leader to have Old Huo taken to the hospital?”

The middle-aged man smiled bitterly, ”People like us, when sick, have to tough it out. If we make it, we survive; if not, we don’t.”

Geng Dalin was speechless.

He quickly entered Old Huo’s room.

Old Huo had been feverish for so long, he was delirious.

Geng Dalin set down his basket and felt Old Huo’s forehead, which was burning hot. He quickly took out the small paper packet from his pocket, took out two pills, and fed them to Old Huo.

The elderly man who followed him in hurriedly poured water to help Old Huo swallow the pills.
