Quick Transmigration: The Cannon Fodder's Comeback in the Era Tales

Chapter 702: Chapter 702: Fleeing Famine 7

”Mom, I’m hungry, can you give me some bran?”

Suddenly, Geng Dazhuang’s irritating voice rang in Yuan Chun’s ears again.

Yuan Chun found something to eat and was in a good mood, so she kindly gave her ’beastly’ son a handful of bran, ”Here, take it, eat carefully, don’t choke.”

Geng Dazhuang’s eyes lit up as he took the bran, ”Mom, you must be hungry too, you should eat as well.”

”I’m not hungry yet, these old bones can do without food. It’s better to save it for you all to eat,” Yuan Chun sighed, wearing a despondent expression as if she wanted to starve herself to save food for her descendants.

Geng Dazhuang didn’t persuade her otherwise.

He also felt that with his mother being so old and joining them in fleeing from the famine, unable to walk properly, being alive was just a waste of food. It would be better if she died sooner, sparing herself from suffering.

But even if he thought that way, he didn’t dare to say it out loud.

If he did, the villagers would drown him in their spit.

It’s only the fourth day of fleeing, and the Geng family still has some food left. They can endure a few more days; it’s not yet the time when people start seeing each other as chicken drumsticks, so there’s still some humanity left in Geng Dazhuang.

But not much.

Geng Dazhuang took the bran and went to the side to swallow it slowly.

At that moment, the old village head called for a meeting and asked each family to send one person into the mountain to look for food.

Yuan Chun had Dalin take a wooden bucket and an enamel mug along with him.

The bucket was for picking wild vegetables, mushrooms, and also for carrying water. The enamel mug was in case they found a water source that was too shallow for the bucket to reach, so they could scoop the water with the mug.

After the old village head organized a team of young and strong people to search for food, those who stayed behind guarded their carts and family members. Yuan Chun and Sun Chunfeng, the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law, each took a side, tightly protecting the five children in the middle.

Yesterday, someone in the village was selling their children.

Trading them for food.

Sun Chunfeng even heard villagers secretly discussing that the Old Fan Family’s little granddaughter had disappeared, and some suspected that the old Fan woman sold her.

Of course, these were just rumors.

”Mom, do you think the Old Fan Family’s little granddaughter was really sold by the old Fan woman?” Sun Chunfeng timidly asked.

Yuan Chun looked at her as if she were a fool, ”What do you think?”

”I don’t know.”

”Fool, in the past few villages we’ve passed through, did you see anyone left? Everyone has fled for survival; who would buy a child?”

”Then... where did the Old Fan Family’s little girl go?”

”I don’t know.”

Yuan Chun knew in her heart that the child probably didn’t survive.

But she couldn’t say that.

Looking into Sun Chunfeng’s honest and bright eyes, she conscientiously kept quiet to avoid scaring Sun Chunfeng so much that she couldn’t sleep at night.

In the scorching midday sun, the group didn’t continue their journey, and everyone laid down to rest in the bamboo grove, each family leaving one person to guard their belongings.

Sun Chunfeng felt sorry for her mother-in-law being too exhausted and said, ”Mom, you and the kids have a nap, I’ll watch over the cart.”

”Alright, wake me if anything happens.”

Yuan Chun didn’t stand on ceremony, taking a straw mat from the cart, spreading it on the ground, and lying down with the five children. Soon, they were all asleep.

When Yuan Chun awoke from her nap, four to five hours had passed, and the team led by the old village head had returned.

To everyone’s delight, they discovered a spring in a deep gully. Although the water source was limited, each family received a mug of water.

When Geng Dalin brought back the water, Geng Dazhuang rushed over first to take a drink.
