Quick Transmigration: The Cannon Fodder's Comeback in the Era Tales

Chapter 78: Chapter 78: The Poor Child Killed by His Uncle 34

Yuan Chun was stunned for a moment, then she laughed, nodded a bit shyly, ”Cheng Fang, ask Grandma Village Chief to be the matchmaker. I have a pound of brown sugar here, you add ten eggs, and use them as the matchmaker’s gift.”

She and Cheng Fang had established their relationship when she was sixteen.

Cheng Fang had been waiting for her to come of age.

Now, she was of age, and their marriage should be put on the schedule.

Seeing her agree, Cheng Fang grinned like a fool, ”Then, then I’ll go find Grandma Village Chief now, I...”

”Cheng Fang, why are you in such a hurry? Finish your meal first, go tomorrow.”

Seeing him about to run off halfway through the meal, Yuan Chun quickly held him back, ”Marriage isn’t a matter of a day or two, one night won’t make a difference.”

Cheng Fang chuckled, ”I’m just anxious, I’ve been dying to marry you and bring you home. No, I plan to marry into your family, Yuan Chun, I want to marry into your family.”

Yuan Chun was taken aback, ”Cheng Fang, you want to marry into my family?”

Then she asked, ”Is it because of your dad?”

The smile disappeared from Cheng Fang’s face, and he mumbled, ”I’m worried that after we get married, he’ll come to bother you when I’m not home. Only if I marry into the Liu Family and become a son-in-law, he won’t dare to trouble you.”

Speaking of Cheng Fang’s father, Cheng Ping, he was quite a character.

In 1960, during a severe drought, Cheng Ping suddenly came to Xiaxi Village, asking a child Cheng Fang for food, saying his whole family was about to starve to death.

Although Cheng Ping had abandoned Cheng Fang to become a son-in-law elsewhere and never cared for his well-being, Cheng Fang still had a place for his father in his heart.

He couldn’t just watch his father starve to death, so he gave him a bag of food.

After that, Cheng Ping would come every month to take food.

Every time he came, he would cry about being poor and hungry.

Cheng Fang had a kind heart and would give him a small bag of food each time.

Later, when Cheng Fang ran out of food, Cheng Ping immediately turned hostile, forcing him to borrow from the villagers.

At that time, it was the summer of 1960, the last stand of the drought, also the time when food was most scarce. Even the well-prepared Xiaxi Village had many families running out of food.

Back then, food was life.

Cheng Fang didn’t have the face to borrow, so he took a beating from Cheng Ping.

For the next two years, Cheng Ping didn’t come to Xiaxi Village again.

And Cheng Fang managed to get through those toughest months thanks to Yuan Chun’s help.

Until 1963, when Cheng Fang got his middle school diploma and started working with the county’s transport team, Cheng Ping appeared again.

Shamelessly, Cheng Ping demanded that Cheng Fang transfer his job to his stepson.

Cheng Fang said, ”Did your stepson even go to school? Even though the transport team only requires driving and loading, you still need at least a middle school education to join.”

After realizing he couldn’t get the job, Cheng Ping shamelessly asked Cheng Fang to hand over his salary to him for safekeeping.

That year, Cheng Fang was just 18, had just joined the transport team, and was a trainee who couldn’t even drive, earning only 18 yuan a month.

For rural people, 18 yuan was already a fortune.

Of course, Cheng Fang refused to agree.

During the drought year, after Cheng Ping took all his food and disregarded his life, Cheng Fang had no feelings left for his father.

He didn’t want to give Cheng Ping a single cent.

Nor did he want to encourage his greed.

Cheng Fang called the village chief and the team leader, seeking to sever ties with Cheng Ping, but Cheng Ping disagreed, saying Cheng Fang owed him gratitude for giving him life and five years of upbringing, and that the house Cheng Fang lived in was his.

If he wanted to sever ties, fine, pay back these debts and the house first.
