Quick Transmigration: The Cannon Fodder's Comeback in the Era Tales

Chapter 67: Chapter 67: Poor Little Orphan Killed by Uncle 23

”Where’s the meat, where’s the fish, you stupid woman, you can’t even keep an eye on the fish and meat. What use are you? I want to divorce you.”

As Yuan Chun and Cheng Fang happily prepared the New Year’s meal, the thunderous roar of anger could be heard from Liu Tiezhu’s home.

Ge Cuilan cried aggrievedly, ”Last night, I clearly locked them in the cabinet. How would I know where the meat went?”

The cabinet’s lock was still there, but the meat was gone, it was truly bizarre.

Ge Cuilan suddenly looked around in terror, ”Dear, do you think it was your father who came by? Did he take our fish and meat, sobbing... The lock is fine, but the fish and meat are gone. Who else but a ghost could do this?”

”This life is unbearable. Whenever we have something good, your father takes it away. Even in death, he won’t let us go, sobbing... My life is so bitter...”

Ge Cuilan sat on the ground, hitting her thighs and wailing loudly.

Liu Tiezhu’s face was ashen. He wanted to curse a bit and lose his temper, but thinking of all the unlucky, strange events he’d experienced over the past two years, he held his tongue.

On New Year’s Eve, the dinner table at Liu Tiezhu’s house only had a plate of fried peanuts and a dish of cabbage and vermicelli stew, with no meat at all.

Liu Yuzhu cried and fussed, wanting to eat meat and fish, and ended up being beaten by Liu Tiezhu.

The new year at Liu Tiezhu’s house was full of chaos.

In contrast, Yuan Chun’s new year was happy, sweet, and joyful.

She fried a large basin of small crispy meat, giving a plate each to Grandfather Three, Grandfather Five, the village chief, Second Grandfather’s family, and Aunt Lin next door.

She also received many return gifts.

There were red bean buns made by Grandmother Three, sesame meat pies made by Grandfather Five’s eldest daughter-in-law, Dongpo meat made by Second Grandma, meat-stuffed dumplings made by Aunt, and peanut meat sauce from the village chief’s family...

Cheng Fang looked at the table full of return gifts and happily packed them into plates, ”Yuan Chun, this is enough for us to eat. Just make a pot of soup.”

”Brother Cheng Fang, you can’t just make do with the New Year’s meal.” She had already planned the New Year’s menu and instructed him, ”Take the red bean buns and Dongpo meat outside to freeze, then put the peanut meat sauce into a jar to save for when we work in the fields.”

”Alright.”

Whatever Yuan Chun said, Cheng Fang listened.

At noon, Yuan Chun made a large table full of meat dishes, braised pork, braised fish, small crispy meat, stew with chicken and mushrooms, spicy rabbit meat, and tiger-skin eggs.

Six dishes, all with meat.

Cheng Fang didn’t even raise his head while eating.

They didn’t cook rice, instead eating the sesame meat pies given by Grandfather Five.

In the evening, they reheated the leftover dishes from noon and cooked the dumplings given by Aunt to eat.

After eating and drinking their fill, Cheng Fang took out a red envelope wrapped in red paper and handed it to Yuan Chun, ”Yuan Chun, this is your New Year’s money from your brother.”

”Thank you, Brother Cheng Fang.”

Yuan Chun obediently took it, then pulled out a small red envelope from her pocket, ”Brother Cheng Fang, this is your New Year’s money from me.”

The two poor orphans exchanged New Year’s money, keeping each other warm, sharing the warmth they brought to each other.

On the first day of the new year, the two children got up early and made cabbage-stuffed vegetarian dumplings to eat.

After eating their fill, the two set off together, going from house to house to pay New Year’s visits.

According to the customs of the Xiaxi Team, children would go from house to house, to bow to their elders for the New Year. Elders didn’t have to give red envelopes, but they had to give the children some snacks.

Sunflower seeds, peanuts, pine nuts, chestnuts, and the more generous ones would give a few fruit candies or a biscuit to the children.

What the children looked forward to the most was going from house to house for the New Year.
