Quick Transmigration: The Cannon Fodder's Comeback in the Era Tales

Chapter 59: Chapter 59: The Poor Child Killed by Her Uncle 15

A few days later, every household in the village started harvesting corn. Little Yuan Chun found last year’s corn bags and handed them all to Auntie.

This year, Uncle will help her gather the crops from the field, and next year, she’ll rent the land to Auntie and Uncle to farm; she’ll just wait to collect the harvest.

The Yuan family only had three acres of land. With the enthusiastic work of Uncle’s family throughout the morning, all the corn was sent into Yuan Chun’s courtyard.

Looking at the small mountain of corn piled up, Yuan Chun smiled with squinted eyes and warmly invited, ”Uncle, Auntie, cousin... I’ve cooked a meal. You can have lunch here with me, saves Auntie from having to go home to cook.”

”Alright, then Uncle won’t be polite with you.”

Upon entering the courtyard, Liu Tielin smelled the aroma of meat and knew that Little Yuan Chun had specially prepared food for them. He accepted the child’s good intentions.

Auntie saw a table full of dishes, including two meat dishes, and couldn’t help but complain, ”Yuan Chun, why did you buy meat? We have cabbage and potatoes at home; just fry some and eat, why waste the money?”

Yuan Chun grinned, ”Auntie, it’s not bought. I went up the mountain yesterday and caught them. I was lucky and caught a wild rabbit and a pheasant. Just perfect to add two meat dishes for us.”

Pheasant stewed with mushrooms, rabbit braised with potatoes, she also fried a plate of pickled radish shreds, cabbage stewed with tofu, black fungus with eggs, and a plate of spicy cabbage.

Six dishes in total, everyone ate till their stomachs were full and round.

During the meal, cousin even told her something, ”Tie Zhu’s family’s corn was stolen. A large patch in the middle of the field is empty, at least 30% of the six-acre field was stolen. Second uncle and aunt were so anxious they cried and cursed at the edge of the field all morning, their throats are hoarse from yelling.”

Yuan Chun pretended to be surprised, ”Who would dare, stealing that much corn?”

Cousin: ”No idea, they don’t even know when the corn got stolen. With such matters, even reporting wouldn’t help. Without catching them in action, who would admit to it?”

Auntie chimed in, ”Your second uncle has been having a string of bad luck, first losing money and now losing food, it’s hard on them.”

Uncle worriedly said, ”The money for Tie Zhu’s couple’s hospital leg treatment was borrowed through me. I promised them they could repay after selling the grain, but now... this year repayment seems impossible.”

Auntie: ”Then just postpone it, everyone faces tough times, and they aren’t refusing to repay, the crops were stolen.”

Uncle: ”Yes, tonight, I’ll go door to door to inform everyone of what happened. Since I borrowed the money, now there’s trouble. Tie Zhu can’t repay, I should let everyone know.”

After the meal, Auntie, Uncle, and the whole family hurried to work on their own fields while Little Yuan Chun, carrying a small basket, headed to the mountains outside the village.

Three hours later, Yuan Chun came down the mountain with a basket full of wild vegetables, mushrooms, and wild fruits.

The Jade Gourd Space now had twenty-six wild chickens and rabbits.

Back home, Yuan Chun started slaughtering rabbits and chickens, preparing to preserve more dried chicken and rabbit; some for the three years of drought, some matured and sent to her dad’s army unit, for her dad and his comrades to enjoy.

People gathered so much money for her and specially sent condolence money to her. She definitely needs to give some return gifts. In these times, every family is struggling. For them to scrape together two hundred, it was saved from every mouthful.

Little Yuan Chun deftly handled the wild chickens and rabbits, washing, cutting, and marinating them, busying herself until dusk. Then, she estimated the time and cooked a large pot of pheasant stewed with potato chunks, also adding dried pine mushrooms and dried bean curd.
