High School of Demon Hunting

Chapter 790: Chapter 138 Dean and Two Assistants_1

As Zheng Qing and Jiang Yu were visiting Doctor Du Zemu and mentioning their newly opened shop, a similar topic arose in an office less than a kilometer away from the Abnormal Life Research Institute.

It was an office at the north end of the first floor of the Nine Realms Academy Office Building.

The door of the office was very clean, with no adornment of the Door God, nor any protective talismans or magical symbols. It appeared like a simple red wooden door. There was a brass plate hanging above the door but due to the lighting, letters on it were blurred by the dim shadow, making it hard to identify from afar.

As if to complement the clean wood door, the brass handle on it was also very clean, shining under the gloomy light of the corridor.

The morning sunlight in winter did not shine brightly, and there was only a sparse light that could filter in through the window at the end of the corridor. But to some extent, a faint light layer still reflected on the floor, leaving a narrow and dim trace.

Then two shadows suddenly appeared in the light, silently moving forward along the center of the corridor. The shadows stretched longer as they advanced.

The figure in front was a young wizard with a tall stature and snow-white hair. His wide robe seemed to be starched, covering his body in a stiff manner. Even the originally soft collar stood erect, almost covering his nose.

Standing next to him was a German with blonde hair and green eyes. He stood tall with a high nose bridge, but the large bags under his eyes and the slightly shadowy eyelids made him look a bit unsightly. Unlike his companion, this wizard was draped in a crumpled robe, the hem of which was spotted with bits of mud as if he had just made a long journey.

”Thomas, you really didn’t need to rush. You could have rested before coming to report.” The young wizard in front lowered his eyelids, his gaze slipping over his partner’s tired face and muddy robe, quietly said, ”At least change your clothes and freshen up first.”

”Old Yao is not Miss Emma, he will not mind such details.” His companion, who was also the interviewer of Zheng Qing, Assistant Professor Thomas, tugged at the corner of his mouth and showed a weak smile, ”Doesn’t this show my dedication...”

Zhang Yu fell silent immediately.

For a while, the corridor fell into tranquillity again. Apart from the rustling footsteps of the two, only the strange, shrill sounds of the parrot-on-duty in the front office could be faintly heard.

However, as the two stood in front of the red wooden door, even the parrot’s voice was no longer audible.

”Oh, right.” Just as Zhang Yu was about to knock on the door, he suddenly remembered something. He removed his hand from the door and reached into his robe. He handed over a red and black invitation card to Thomas, ”This is an invitation sent to you by your student. It seems to be inviting you to the opening ceremony of a shop...You were absent a few days ago, so I signed for you. Hilda from the office has also received the same invitation.”

”My student?” Thomas raised his eyebrows in surprise, ”I don’t have fixed classes this semester, which student are they talking about?”

”He’s a first-year scholarship student from Jiuyou Academy, his name is Zheng Qing.” Zhang Yu thought for a few seconds before answering, ”If I remember correctly, Old Yao assigned you as his interviewer, right?”

”Ah, it’s that kid.” Thomas remembered, nodded and held up the red card in his hand.

With the faint light coming from the glass window at the end of the corridor, he could vaguely see the wording ’D&K’ and ’December 20th’ on the card.

”December 20th, that’s next Saturday.” Thomas muttered.

”Yes, it’s the day before the Winter Solstice...Maybe you could bring a plate of dumplings as a gift.” Zhang Yu chuckled lightly.

It was then that the red door in front of them swung open forcefully. A harsh voice erupted from the room, ”How long do the two of you plan to stand out there?! I came to the office early in the morning not to listen to your idle chatter!”

The two assistants exchanged glances, gave a dry laugh, and hurried into the room.

As their shadows disappeared beyond the threshold, the red door swung back and closed tightly once again.

Keeping with the color of Jiuyou Academy, the main color scheme of Professor Yao’s office has always been red.

Deep red carpet, tall red oak bookcase, date red desk, several red-leathered soft armchairs - the only difference from the last visit of Thomas was that today a pot of red-leaved plant had been added to the desk.

”This is a pot of Flame Web Grass from the Fathomless Valley, a Christmas gift from a student.” Noticing the gaze of the assistant professor, Professor Yao said indignantly, ”Perhaps I should change to another college... I have no idea why everyone thinks I love red. Can you believe that I’ve already received nearly a hundred red scarves this year? It’s not even my zodiac year!”

”You may donate those scarves to the House of Jugglers in the North District.” Thomas suggested laughingly.

”That’s a good idea.” Old Yao snorted, pushed away the small box of tobacco on the table and moved a red and black card into his drawer.

Thomas blinked.

”Is that Zheng Qing’s invitation? He also sent you one?” He seemed to find this interesting, craning his neck to take a closer look.

”Mhm, quite an interesting young boy, just a bit unruly.” Old Yao puffed on his pipe, sat down in his armchair and pointed at the red and black invitation card with a hint of helplessness in his tone, ”Starting a shop?! Ridiculous... Students should devote themselves to their studies at school, not starting businesses!”

”Unruly? That’s rather extreme... I remember him as a well-behaved child.” Perhaps Thomas thought Old Yao’s assessment was a bit biased, he couldn’t help but say, ”This may be a generation gap. Young people nowadays are different from us back then. They do not necessarily want to focus all their energies on their academic lives.”

”If he were well-behaved, he wouldn’t receive a penalty notice from the School Work Committee right after starting school!” Old Yao expelled two jets of smoke from his nostrils, almost like an enraged fire dragon.

”Actually, the School Work Committee has given him good evaluations.” Zhang Yu, who had been silent, suddenly spoke, ”In recent weeks, the School Work Committee’s reviews of his practical reports have been favorable.”

”You two...Do you know how to speak with superiors?!” Old Yao sighed deeply, took another puff of his pipe and grumbled, ”What a disaster...Let’s stop this nonsense, Zhang Yu, you report first. Talk about the arrangements for the Winter Hunt. Thomas, you can take this time to rest on the couch in the back.”
