High School of Demon Hunting

Chapter 85: Chapter 9 Professor’s Advice to New Students_1

Old Yao seemed unaware of the somewhat awkward atmosphere in the classroom.

He took out a timer from his pocket, checked the time, then cleared his throat and walked back to the podium:

”Self-introduction, this is the first question you face in college.”

”Humans are social animals. When you come to this island, the first university, alone, you first need to integrate into this unfamiliar society.”

When he got here, he paused for a moment, scanning the classroom with a sharp gaze.

”Your performance was poor.”

” It disappoints me.”

The new students sat straight, looking a bit nervously at the professor on the podium.

Old Yao, clenching his pipe, paced slowly on the podium, slowing down his tone:

”Facing a strange environment, not knowing how to present yourself, not knowing how to highlight your characteristics. All these, you will have to learn later.”

”If there were enough time, I would like you all to reintroduce yourself. But time is limited now, let’s call it a day. I hope you perform better in the other professors’ classes.”

”Next, I will re-emphasize some points—all of which will need to be stressed every year.”

The professor stopped in the center of the podium, flicked the chalkboard with his fingers.

Three large characters slowly appeared in the center of the blackboard.

”Talisman, Divination, Astronomy.”

”There is a path to the mountains of books, the sea of learning is boundless! Do you all know this line?” Professor Yao threw out a question, but didn’t wait for a response and answered himself: ”This is the motto of Jiuyou Academy. You can all see this line on your admission letters!”

”How should we interpret this line?”

”This line is asking you to explore the endless knowledge! Tireless, endless exploration!”

”However!”

”Exploration requires a solid foundation in theory and practice. And this foundation, is ’Talisman, Divination, Astronomy’!”

”Talisman is your Talisman Studies; Divination is your Divination Studies; and Astronomy is your Astronomy Studies. If you learn these three well, you can easily understand my magic spells, without any difficulty! If you don’t learn these three well, you can’t even understand the formula given to you by the professor of potion studies!”

”Therefore, you must learn these three subjects independently and consciously.”

”This is the foundation for you to become a registered wizard! If you want to go further on the path of being a wizard, you must lay this foundation.”

With that, Old Yao looked at Xin Fat Man encouragingly.

The fat man struggled to straighten his back, trying to respond to the professor with his actions. But his plump figure made this effort pale in comparison.

Zheng Qing fidgeted in his seat, changing his sitting position.

He only had a vague understanding of the courses mentioned by the professor, which inevitably added a lot of worries about the future.

”In addition, as your counselor, I need to stress two words!”

”Credits! ID card!”

”Carve these five words deeply into your minds.”

”Credits are your life in college! Your credits are all on your own ID card!”

Old Yao’s voice slowly descended from the podium, picked up Liu Fei Fei’s ID card on the table in the first row, and emphasized:

”You want to enter the library? Take out your ID card!”

”You want to enter the lab? Take out your ID card!”

”You want to attend a lecture by a famous professor? Take out your ID card!”

”Whether it’s borrowing books, using lab equipment, or even eating, sleeping, taking a bath! Every time you use a school facility, you must submit your ID card.”

”And the standard for whether or not you are eligible to use these facilities is your credit.”

”To earn credits, every professor’s coursework must be completed on time and with quality! Every school-organized activity must be participated in with passion! Every opportunity for extra credits should be fought for crazily!”

”Enough credits can get enough resources from the school to experiment with your own magic, train your abilities; can help you upgrade your equipment in the school, improve your body; is the only key for you to enter the upper-class world in the college.”

At this point, Old Yao paused his speech and took a short rest.

A few small elves flew to the professor with a white mug, steaming pearl-colored vapor rising above the wide mouth of the cup.

The professor smiled and nodded, took the cup, moistened his throat and continued the lecture:

”You have all experienced the charm of magic more or less. Plenty of credits would enable you to fully enjoy this charm and experience that mysterious and dreamlike world.”

”Therefore, remember these five words.” The corner of the professor’s mouth revealed a meaningful smile: ”Trust me, in the first university, credits are aharder currency than jade coins.”

Zheng Qing licked his lips, feeling a bit dry, and a faint hint of sweetness and fishiness.

The newcomers in the classroom were somewhat stirred up by Old Yao’s speech.

”In addition, I have a few announcements.”

Old Yao waved his hand, and the classroom fell silent again.

”The first one is about the trial.”

”Perhaps some students have heard that the first university has a trial for about a month when school starts. The school will throw you tender newcomers into the hunting grounds, toss you around and thicken your skin.”

Perhaps thinking Old Yao’s comment is quite witty, there were several chuckles from the classroom.

Zheng Qing also laughed.

Then he saw the frowning Xiao Xiao, the grim-faced Zhang Ji Xin, and the Xin Fat Man trying to shrink under the table.

He promptly shut his mouth.

Old Yao seemed to not notice the anxious expressions of the new students and continued:

”But the school found that the risk of a new student’s trial is difficult to control. Therefore, for safety reasons, starting from this year, the trials for new students will be arranged one month before the start of the second year. You have a whole school year, plus half of summer break to prepare.”

The classroom buzzed with discussion.

Zheng Qing turned to look at Xiao Xiao, ”Is this new student trial very difficult?”

”Difficult?” Xin Fat Man turned around, his pudgy face furrowed, and exaggerated with a neurotic tone: ”Not difficult! It’s hellish! It’s a tomb for new students!”

”Every year, some new students die during the trial.” A light, airy explanation came from Xiao Xiao.

Zheng Qing gaped in horror:

”People die?”

His voice was a bit shrill.

Old Yao knocked on the blackboard again.

The classroom fell silent again.

”No one will die.” The professor corrected with a smile: ”After the new rules are implemented, there will be no more accidents for new students. The joint meeting of professors can assure this.”

He waved his hand, skipped over this topic, and continued:

”The second thing is about the invitation.”

”Every freshman season—just like now—is the season for all student organizations in the school to recruit newcomers. Over the next month, including the student conferences of the school, the student conferences of the Academy, the major clubs of the Social Federation will start to look for new members in succession. For new students who meet their requirements, these student organizations will provide an invitation.”

”I hope that each of you can get at least one invitation. According to the tradition of the first university, each formal invitation can be exchanged for a 0.1 credit with the counselor. This will be your first income in college, make sure to not take it lightly.”

”As for those newcomers who did not get an invitation, as usual, the counselor’s score will be 30% less at the end of the term.”

The professor pointed at his heart with his thumb:

”With sincerity, you can always find an organization that suits you.”
