High School of Demon Hunting

Chapter 83: Chapter 7 Wizard Level_1

The midday sun was somewhat dazzling.

Warm sunlight permeated through the towering glass windows, casting a shimmering white glow in the classroom. These spots of light trembled slightly as a breeze brushed past the window, like transparent jelly that could induce salivation.

Old Yao held a blackened tobacco pipe in his hand, leaning against the window. Pale blue smoke twisted and twirled in the sunlight, and his glossy bald head appeared and disappeared in the wafting smoke.

He slouched against the lectern, his eyelids drooping, almost squinting to such a level that one might think he was dozing off.

Of course, this was a misconception.

Each time a freshman finished their introduction, Old Yao would knock his pipe, flip through the roll book, and call out the name of the next person to take the stage.

He was calling names based on the college entrance exam score.

This was very easy to judge.

Following the lead of the first few students, later freshmen began adding their own college entrance exam scores at the end of their self-introductions.

It was as if these scores were colorful business cards, carefully received, scrutinized, and then slipped into different compartments of a wallet.

Zheng Qing propped his head, gazing unfocused at the podium, fiddling with the drawstring of his grey cloth bag.

Would Jiang Yu send him a duel application after class?

Should he promptly run off the moment the bell rang?

His thoughts bubbled away in his mind.

Fighting a girl would make him a laughingstock.

If he won, there would be nothing to brag about, and people might even disdain him; if he lost, Zheng Qing was sure many people would readily offer him a piece of tofu (a Chinese metaphor for committing suicide due to extreme shame).

Perhaps wherever he went, people would be pointing and whispering about him:

Look, that guy fought against a girl!

Zheng Qing rubbed his face and sighed deeply.

Only a fool would engage in a fight where either winning or losing will bring a loss.

His gaze shifted to a tall silhouette in the front row, contemplating whether there would be a more graceful way to forfeit.

Jiang Yu was sitting upright in her seat, with her soft black hair falling gracefully on her back. Her profile revealed a cute nose, soft rosy lips, and a short, jade-like white neck.

She is indeed very beautiful, why would her temper be so explosive?

Zheng Qing was lost in thought, staring at her silhouette.

Her college entrance exam score was just 475, only five points lower than his own. She was the third-ranked freshman, what more could she ask for!

Laughter erupted in the classroom, jolting the lost-in-thought peeper from his trance.

He raised his head in confusion.

Apparently, a freshman was so nervous that he had stumbled his way to the stage, causing the whole class to erupt in laughter.

From not far away, Xiao Xiao Hu cast a suspicious look at Zheng Qing.

Swallowing, Zheng Qing blinked at him and asked in a low voice, ”Why haven’t you been called yet?”

Xiao Xiao gestured to his ear, indicating that he hadn’t heard clearly.

He was sitting on the innermost side of the row, while Zheng Qing was on the outermost side, with four or five empty seats between them.

”Ahem.” A light cough came from the lectern where Old Yao was.

Zheng Qing immediately sat upright.

Old Yao’s face was hidden within the slowly spiraling pale smoke, making it hard to discern his expression. The only thing visible was a hint of a smile at the corner of his mouth and the slightly quivering pipe as he moved his head.

Slight shuffling sounds came from the side.

Jatting at the lean male student called Duan Xiao Jian on the stage, Zheng Qing quickly put his thoughts into motion.

With already more than a dozen freshmen introduced, Xiao Xiao’s name hadn’t been called by Old Yao. According to Zheng Qing’s estimation of this walking dictionary, his Magic exam score shouldn’t be this low.

Until Xiao Xiao straightforwardly denied it, Zheng Qing had always thought he was that rumored top public expense student.

Something nudged his arm, interrupting his guesses.

Zheng Qing raised an eyebrow.

It was a paper turtle.

The back of the turtle was clearly marked with the gray horizontal lines and footnotes of a notebook page.

The paper turtle stretched its neck and slowly rolled over to reveal a smooth belly, across which was drawn a large question mark with a brush.

Zheng Qing held back his laughter and glanced at Xiao Xiao.

The boy known as Watermelon Head adjusted his glasses and, looking very official, focused on the podium.

”What was your college entrance exam score?”

Zheng Qing dismantled the paper turtle, wrote his question on it, and then hesitated.

He didn’t know how to fold a paper turtle.

But he did know how to fold a frog.

A few seconds later, a paper frog slowly crawled across the desk towards Xiao Xiao, moving in the same way as the paper turtle.

Soon, the paper turtle crawled back in front of Zheng Qing.

”0.”

Zheng Qing opened his eyes wide, hesitated for a few minutes licking his brush, and let the frog carry a string of question marks to Xiao Xiao.

”I was specifically recruited and didn’t take the wizard’s college entrance exam, so I don’t have any scores.”

Zheng Qing unfolded the paper turtle in his hands, spread it out, and folded it into neat squares.

He then unfolded the paper again, spread it flat, and folded it again.

He had many questions to ask Xiao Xiao, but didn’t know where to start.

Xin Fat Man in the front row squeezed his sizable girth out from behind his tiny desk, stood up, and with his large butt shaking, he walked to the podium.

Zheng Qing dismissed his thoughts and joined the other boys in their enthusiastic applause.

Old Yao nodded slightly by the window, signaling Xin Fat Man to begin.

”My name is Sin Bana Schmidt-Bayer, I come from Worms in the Rhein. You can just call me Sin. I don’t have pets, I love food, and I’m good at finding the most distinctive dishes in each new place.”

The fat man made a show of scratching his short hair. Dandruffs fluttered in the sunlight, exceptionally conspicuous.

A few of the girls in the front row disgustedly waved their hands around.

Zheng Qing covered his face, unable to bear the sight.

The fat man didn’t notice, he just continued with even more enthusiasm, yelling, ”My dream is to become a great wizard! So, I hope to get the certificate of a registered wizard after four years!”

”You are all my supervisors!”

”This is my promise to you!”

With that, he strode off the podium towards his seat with exceptional panache.

There was a hesitant and somewhat sparse round of applause in the classroom.

But it ended abruptly when Xin Fat Man, who had just stepped off the platform, made a mad dash back to the podium.

He nervously added,

”My college entrance exam score was 410. Oh, right, I’m a blue giant. I hope to be good friends with everyone, thank you!”

Zheng Qing didn’t care about Xin Fat Man’s final performance.

He had just realized a new question, and sent another crawling frog to Xiao Xiao:

”Are there levels to being a wizard?”

This time, Xiao Xiao’s reply was a little slow.

It wasn’t until another new student had stepped down from the podium that the paper turtle, barely moving, crawled back into Zheng Qing’s hands.

After unraveling the paper turtle, a long paragraph appeared in front of Zheng Qing:

”Of course, there are levels to being a wizard. Wherever there is consciousness, there is this kind of distinction.”

”Wizards all over the world have various occupations or identities. For example, monks, priests, ninjas, black knights, etc., each profession has its own unique level division.”

”But to the Wizard’s Alliance, wizards are generally divided into three levels: wizard, certified wizard, and grand wizard.”

The handwriting on the reply was a bit small and rough, making Zheng Qing have to work hard to decipher it.
