Chapter 1704: Chapter 1705: Sense of Crisis...

”Emperor,” the imperial guard immediately stepped forward to stop him, ”Guard Lin and the others, like me, have always been loyal to the Emperor and have never deceived you. There must be some misunderstanding.”

Reminded by this, Dongfang Tianyang restrained his impulse to execute those guards of Quiet Heart Garden and instead said, ”Go quickly and find out what’s going on. If it is indeed their mistake, I will still have them executed.”

”Yes!” The imperial guard left the Imperial Study Room at once to investigate.

Two hours later, the imperial guard returned and reported to Dongfang Tianyang, ”Emperor, I have investigated thoroughly. Last night, someone who looks exactly like the Emperor took Concubine Intention from Quiet Heart Garden, claiming to attend the Third Prince’s wake. Not only did everyone from Quiet Heart Garden see him, but the guards at each palace gate also saw him. They all thought it was the Emperor and dared not stop him, so they opened the palace gates, allowing him to leave the palace with Concubine Intention.”

”How is this possible!” Dongfang Tianyang was furious and could not believe it. ”I don’t have a twin brother; who would look like me!”

The imperial guard replied, ”Emperor, I would never dare to deceive you. This is the absolute truth. If the Emperor does not believe it, you can send others to verify. Truly, everyone from Quiet Heart Garden saw him, and so did the guards at each palace gate. There really is someone who looks exactly like the Emperor.”

This imperial guard was one of his confidants, and seeing him speak so, Dongfang Tianyang was no longer so certain that there wasn’t someone who looked exactly like him.

The imperial guard, noticing Dongfang Tianyang slowly accepting the situation, continued, ”Last night, I was stationed outside the Emperor’s bedchamber. Had I seen him simultaneously, I would have known he was not the Emperor. But they did not know, and all believed it was the Emperor, which is why Concubine Intention was able to be taken out of the palace.”

Dongfang Tianyang’s expression was particularly grim.

The imperial guard hesitated for a moment but still said, ”Guard Lin mentioned that the person’s voice was also the same as the Emperor’s.”

”Absurd!” Not only does he look the same, but also his voice? Dongfang Tianyang was beginning to accept it, but now he did not believe it at all. ”Is there another me in this world?”

The imperial guard immediately kneeled down, not daring to speak further.

Dongfang Tianyang sent another imperial guard to investigate, but the result was the same, leaving him no choice but to believe.

Thus, Dongfang Tianyang fell silent.

After a long while, he muttered, still unable to believe, ”How can this be... if that person secretly kills me, impersonates me, and seizes my empire, and no one could even tell?”

At this moment, Dongfang Tianyang truly felt a deep sense of crisis.

The two imperial guards dared not speak.

The eunuchs and palace maids dared even less to speak.

At this time, the chief eunuch cautiously stepped forward, ”Emperor, this old servant once heard of something that may be true.”

”What is it?” Dongfang Tianyang asked in a displeased tone.

The chief eunuch then said, trembling, ”This old servant heard that there is a secret technique in this world called the Face-changing Technique. It allows someone to disguise themselves as anyone they wish. If there isn’t truly someone in this world who looks identical to the Emperor, then that person might be using a disguise. I had only heard it from storytellers, merely treating it as fiction, but thinking about it now, it might be true.”

Dongfang Tianyang pondered, ”I have also heard of the Face-changing Technique but always thought it was fictional, made up by those writers of stories. Now... perhaps, as you say, it might be true.”
