ASOIAF/Game Of Thrones: Ruler of Batannia

The ink of the Pheasant Hall Truce was not yet dry, and the dust of the Reach’s withdrawal had not yet settled, and Arthur had time neither to breathe after the pyrrhic victory nor to bury his dead properly. The smoke of rebellion in the Riverlands and the reports from Seagard fell across the west’s fresh wounds like two burning whips. Time, in that hour, was dearer than gold and sharper than any blade.

He stood in the hall of the Pheasant Hall keep over a great map, candlelight caught in eyes bloodshot and hawk-sharp, with Diana, Smith, Alwin, and riders newly arrived from the Golden Tooth and the Crag holding their breath around him.

“We have no time to raise a grand host, and no strength to scatter into garrisons,” he said, hoarse, each word a nail driven flush. “The rebellion dies now, and it dies loudly. And Seagard does not fall. It is the Trident’s one door to the sea, the throat of every lane that ties us to the North. Lose it to the Vale or the rebels and we are locked into the southwest corner while the Riverlands drop out of our hands.”

His finger struck Seagard on the map, then dragged north across the Trident, past the Twins, and came to rest near Riverrun and the east, where the trout banners had risen.

“Assemble every horse. From the Pheasant Hall and Cornhall lines, every man who can still ride, Bannermen Guard riders, Rangers, western knights and scouts, even light infantry who can fight from the saddle. All of them. I lead them myself.”

“My lord!” Diana burst out. “Your safety — and cavalry alone cannot take walls or hold a country.”

“I am not going to take walls. I am going to take their nerve.” The fire in his eyes was cold. “This rebellion was raised in haste and has no roots. The men under those trout banners are fence-sitters, malcontents, and the Vale’s hirelings, and their whole plan rests on one belief: that we are pinned at Pheasant Hall and our rear lies open. I will appear in front of them faster than belief can travel, break their arithmetic under iron hooves, and let the sword explain the price of treachery.”

He turned to Smith. “I leave you twenty thousand, the recovered and the steadiest foot. You and Diana hold the Pheasant Hall–Cornhall line together, watch the Reach, mend the walls, and stand as the general reserve for every front at once. Hear me: holding steady is great service.”

“By your command.” Smith and Diana traded one look and found the same thing in each other, the knowledge that this was a gamble, and that it was also the only stroke that broke the board.

“Alwin. In my name, to Lord Gawen at the Crag: keep the Silverhill–Deep Den line safe and push every mobile man he can spare toward the Golden Tooth, to await Ser Rhaegar’s command, overawe the eastern Trident, and shut the door on anything more slipping in from the Vale. To Ser Rhaegar Spicer: hold the Tooth, steady the western Riverlands, and put his best scouts deep into the east. I want the rebellion’s true size, its names, and the Vale’s real strength and intent.” Alwin’s pen flew.

“And the sea. To Lord Jason Mallister: the truce is signed. He holds Seagard’s port and throws back or at least delays whatever the Vale tries to land. And he detaches an elite squadron at once, under himself or his best man, north into Ironman’s Bay, to sweep the coast from the Iron Islands’ eastern waters down to Lannisport and keep the whole lane clear. Ironborn remnants, Asha’s or Victarion’s, will smell the chaos, and the Vale may try to feed its people by sea. Tell him plainly: that water is our lifeline to the North. It is not lost.”

The orders went out like a gale, and soon Pheasant Hall rang inside and out with hooves, shouted names, and the clatter of arms. Every man who could still sit a horse was pulled into the muster, battle-worn Battanian riders, western knights carrying fresh wounds, Volunteers and noble youths who could shoot from the saddle, until an emergency legion stood in the yards, somewhere between eight and ten thousand strong, on horses of every quality and in gear of every age, with one identical thing burning in all their eyes: rage at the backstab, and the will to follow their duke into whatever came.

Arthur wasted no speech on them. He swung up onto a big black warhorse taken from the Reach, raised the bloodstained greatsword, and pointed it north, his ruined voice carrying anyway.

“The traitors of the Trident have broken their oaths. The vipers of the Vale strike while we bleed. Brothers, ride north with me. Wash the shame out in their blood, and buy the Riverlands a lasting peace with their heads. For the Westerlands! For the Riverlands! For our fallen brothers — forward!”

The answer was ten thousand horses screaming and iron hooves like thunder. The exhausted, ferocious column burst through the north gate of Pheasant Hall like a dragon off its chain and poured up the remains of the kingsroad toward the heart of the Trident and the line of Seagard, stripped of all baggage but rations, arrows, and remounts, riding at the ragged edge of what horseflesh allows, shaking every village they passed.

At sea, Lord Jason received his orders and read the water. The Vale’s landing was smaller than the panic had painted it, some three thousand men dug into a beachhead outside Seagard and unable to reach the port’s heart, and with the Reach’s blockade of Lannisport lifted by the truce, he could afford boldness. He left a deputy on the walls, took better than twenty of Seagard’s fastest galleys and longships, and ran north on the wind into the cold, working waters of Ironman’s Bay, to play the long game of patrol, hide-and-seek, and deterrence along the lifeline, against Ironborn, Vale ships, or pirates wearing either face.

At the Golden Tooth, Ser Rhaegar Spicer’s blood rose with his orders and the news of Gawen’s reinforcements. While he strengthened the walls and pushed scouts deep into the east, he issued a proclamation in the name of the Lord Paramount of the Trident to every river lord not yet in open revolt, condemning the rising, commanding them to muster toward the Tooth or Seagard against the rebels, promising reward for service and a hard reckoning for fence-sitters, and riding the momentum of the duke’s northward storm to isolate the traitors before they could spread.

Arthur’s legion drove north day and night, men resting only when the horses did. Along the road they passed smallfolk fleeing the east and gathered the shape of the thing in fragments: the rebels flew the trout to “avenge Lord Tully” and “drive out the westermen,” their core said to be branches of House Vance out of Maegor’s Hold and a knight of House Harroway, and they burned and looted as they went. But the rebellion’s true strength, and the Vale’s true intent, stayed wrapped in fog.

At dusk on the third day the forward scouts sighted the tall towers of Seagard and the rough camp of the Vale army outside it, and Arthur knew the hour had come. He did not attack at once. The march had emptied men and horses both, so he rested the column behind a screening hill, fed the animals, ate, checked gear, and sent the best of the Battanian Rangers ghosting toward the Vale camp and the rebels’ likely ground for one last look.

He climbed the hill himself and studied Seagard crouched like a beast in the dark, and the scattered fires of the Vale army below its walls, the sea wind carrying salt and smoke. His was a spent force, and a vengeful one, fighting with a grieving army’s desperation. The Vale men were rested, few, and far from home, leaning on river allies whose worth no one had tested. It was a wager on speed, on shock, on the hearts of the river folk not yet having turned, and on one question above the rest: whether Petyr Baelish truly meant to fight to the death here, for a corner of someone else’s country.

“Pass the word,” Arthur said quietly to Kator, who had refused to be left behind. “At midnight the whole force falls on the Vale camp. No one gets entangled. Scatter them, rout them, and above all burn their grain and baggage. Then we turn straight for Maegor’s Hold, where the trout flies highest. Before sunrise, I want every soul in the Riverlands to know the price of betrayal, and to know that I have come back.”

The night deepened and the sea sobbed against the shore. Eight thousand riders tightened girths and whetted steel in the dark, waiting for the charge that would decide them, while out on the moonlit water the shapes of Lord Jason’s ships slid past like hounds walking the fence line. The war to pacify the Riverlands began as a bolt of lightning aimed at the enemy’s heart, and Arthur’s wager was already in the air.
