ASOIAF/Game Of Thrones: Ruler of Batannia

Drogon and Rhaegal dropped the dead dragon far from the Wall, beyond the worst of the corpse tide and away from the Night King’s immediate grasp. Viserion struck the snow hard, broken wing dragging a trench through the frozen ground. Blue light still burned in his eyes, though it flickered now, unstable beneath the damage done by dragonfire and the loss of one wing. Frost steamed from him. Charred bone smoked. He was terrible, ruined, and still familiar enough to tear the heart.

Daenerys did not wait for Drogon to settle. She slid from his back and stumbled in the snow, falling to one knee before forcing herself upright. Drogon lowered his head after her, growling in warning, while Rhaegal crouched nearby with wings half-spread. Both dragons were exhausted and afraid, but neither tried to stop her. Perhaps they understood. Perhaps they were too tired to fight her will. Both explanations were very dragon-like, and neither helped anyone standing below.

“Viserion,” Daenerys whispered.

The dead dragon’s head shifted toward her. His jaws opened slightly, showing teeth glazed in ice. Cold struck her like a hand against the chest. It tried to enter her lungs, her blood, her thoughts. She kept walking.

“My child.”

She reached him and placed her hand upon his skull.

The cold nearly took her at once.

It rushed through her fingers, up her arm, into bone and heart and the deep hidden places where dragon blood burned. For a heartbeat she felt only pain. Cold. Hunger. Chains. Then, beneath it all, there came a thread of warmth so faint that she might have missed it if she had not been born to fire and grief in equal measure.

Viserion.

Not whole. Not free. Not alive as he had been. But there. Some last shard of him remained, buried beneath the Night King’s cold, trapped in a body that had been made into a weapon.

Daenerys sobbed. The sound was torn from her before pride could stop it.

“I feel you,” she said. “You are cold. You are in pain. You are calling me.”

On her wrist, the three faint dragon marks that bound her to her children began to glow red, weakly at first, then warmer. Her blood quickened. Her heart beat hard enough to hurt. The old words of her house came to her, not as a boast now, not as threat or royal claim, but as truth written in the body. Blood and fire were one. Not power alone. Bond. Memory. Price.

She closed her eyes and poured herself through that touch. Her grief, her love, her fury, her pride, the memory of three eggs in the flames, of wings beating above the grass sea, of chains broken, cities burning, and children who had never been human but had been hers more truly than any throne.

“Wake, Viserion,” she whispered. “Look at me. I am your mother. Do not bow to the cold. Do not bow to death. You are a dragon. You are my child. Your fire lives in me. Your soul is bound to my blood. Come back. Come back to me.”

Drogon and Rhaegal rumbled behind her, low and anxious. They too felt something moving beneath the ice. Viserion’s body trembled. The blue flames in his eyes flickered, and for an instant a trace of dark gold appeared within them, small as a candle glimpsed through storm shutters.

The tale has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation.

Far away, Stannis’s last fire began to fade.

The Night King forced the red-gold beam back inch by inch. His sword was more cracked than before. His armor was split, the fissures along his ruined arm deepened and smoking with hostile light. The cold about him had become uneven, less serene, more violent. At last the beam broke into sparks and vanished into the night.

Thoros lay dead beside Stannis. The king’s body did not move.

The Night King turned.

His gaze found Daenerys across the snow, her hand upon the head of the dragon he had stolen, red light pulsing from her blood into the corpse. For the first time, Arthur Greyoak had no need of green dreams or old magic to understand what the Night King felt. It was rage. Not the anger of wounded pride alone, but of ownership challenged. Daenerys was reaching into his work, touching what he had claimed, and trying to undo the blasphemy he had made.

The Night King hissed. The sound froze mist in the air.

Then he moved.

The frozen earth shattered beneath his feet. He became a pale blur, sword in hand, racing across the battlefield toward Daenerys and the fallen dragon. Wights turned aside as he passed. White Walkers followed in his wake, but none could match his speed. He meant to end her himself. To freeze the woman, break the bond, and reclaim the dragon’s body before fire and blood could steal back what death had taken.

On the Wall, Arthur saw him go.

“Daenerys,” he breathed, and the word vanished under the noise of battle.

There was no time to send men. No horse could outrun that pale shape. No scorpion could turn fast enough through the chaos. The Wall still fought for its own life, and yet the war had suddenly narrowed again to the snowfield beyond it, to a queen kneeling beside a dead dragon and a king of winter coming to kill her.

Arthur raised his sword and felt the green pulse flare beneath his skin. The old ice answered weakly, stretched thin across too many wounds, too many prayers, too many dying men. He could not stop the Night King from there. Not by strength. Not by command. But he could keep the Wall alive long enough for whatever happened below to matter.

“Hold,” he shouted to the men around him. “Hold the Wall. The queen bought her chance. Stannis bought her time. We do not waste either.”

Kator, half-frozen and bleeding, took up the call. Smith drove fresh men into the western gap. Denys Mallister rallied the black brothers around a broken scorpion and had them fire stones by hand when the mechanism failed. Northmen, Free Folk, Westerlands knights, Stannis’s remnants, and Battanian Oathkeepers all fought beneath the same bitter wind. If the gods were watching, they were at least being spared a dull evening.

In the snowfield, Daenerys did not look back.

She felt the Night King coming. Every instinct screamed at her to flee. Drogon turned toward the approaching cold and opened his jaws, but she pressed her will against him.

“Wait.”

The word tore through the bond. Drogon hated it. Rhaegal hated it. Daenerys hated it most of all. Yet Viserion’s faint warmth trembled beneath her palm, and if she broke away now, the thread might vanish forever.

The dead dragon’s body shook harder. Blue fire flared in his eyes. Gold answered. Ice spread over Daenerys’s hand, then melted where the red glow from her blood marks touched it. Her skin burned and froze at once. She cried out but did not let go.

“Viserion,” she whispered again. “Hear me.”

The Night King crossed the burning lanes left by dragonfire. The flames lowered as he passed but did not wholly die. His cracked sword rose.

Drogon roared and moved at last.

The black dragon hurled himself between Daenerys and the Night King, wings spread, wounded body shaking with exhaustion and fury. Rhaegal came down beside him, green-gold fire gathering in his throat. The Night King did not slow. His blade trailed cold enough to turn falling ash into ice.

Daenerys opened her eyes.

Viserion’s blue gaze met hers. Deep within it, small and tortured, gold burned again.

“Come back,” she said, and this time the words were not plea, but command. “Or be free.”

The Night King struck.

Drogon’s fire burst forth to meet him. Rhaegal’s joined it, and the snowfield vanished beneath red, gold, green, blue, and white light. Behind them, Daenerys pressed her bloodied hand harder against Viserion’s skull and poured all that remained of herself into the bond.

Fire and ice met again at the edge of the long night, and for one breath the world held still, waiting to learn whether death could truly own what had been born of blood and flame.
