ASOIAF/Game Of Thrones: Ruler of Batannia

Beyond the Wall, the snowfields lay under the cold grey light of dawn, strangely still after the fury of the night. It was not the silence the dead had brought with them. That silence had been full of command, hunger, and old malice. This was emptier and sadder: the hush that follows when life and death have both spent their strength and neither has the courtesy to explain the cost.

The wind moved over the field in low, mournful gusts, lifting smoke, ash, and fine snow from the heaps of ruin. Men lay among wights. Wights lay among broken ice. Here and there, the remains of shattered White Walkers glittered like glass spilled from a dead god’s cup. Farther out, Viserion’s ruined body rested beneath the bleak light, no longer burning blue, no longer wearing the Night King’s will, but still too large and too sad for any man to look upon for long.

Castle Black had survived, which was not the same thing as being saved. Inside its battered walls, relief lasted only long enough for men to discover how many friends had not risen with the dawn. Then came the work. Always the work. Wounds to bind. Dead to count. Fires to stamp out. Frostbitten limbs to cut away. Bodies to separate when they could be separated, and burn when they could not.

The groans of the wounded replaced the war cries. The air smelled of blood, boiled herbs, burnt flesh, dragon smoke, and the sour rot left by the dead. Black brothers, Northmen, Westerlands men, Battanian Oathkeepers, Unsullied, and Dothraki moved among the ruins with the same stunned silence. They had fought beside one another against the end of the world. Now they carried corpses together, which was the sort of fellowship no singer had ever bothered with.

No one cheered.

The Night King was gone. The dead had fallen. The Wall still stood. Those facts should have filled men with triumph. Instead they produced a hollow bewilderment, as if victory had come wearing another man’s face and asking payment for debts no one remembered taking.

The Night’s Watch had suffered worst of all. From Lord Commander Jason Mallister down to the newest boy sworn in black, fewer than one in ten fighting men remained fit to hold a spear. Castle Black had been gutted. Eastwatch-by-the-Sea and the Shadow Tower had sent what men they could and lost most of them. Ranger families, stewards’ lines, old black brotherhoods with more grudges than teeth, all had ended in a single night.

The hundred or so brothers who still lived, many of them wounded, went about their duties under the command of surviving stewards, builders, and craftsmen. Their eyes were full of exhaustion and something more difficult to name. The Watch had been nearly destroyed in the act of fulfilling the purpose for which it had been made. Human institutions rarely receive such clean irony. Usually they fail for stupider reasons.

Stannis Baratheon’s remnants were scarcely better. The men who had followed their hard king north had seen him spend his last blood in fire to hold the Night King for a moment, and had seen that moment become part of the world’s salvation. It did not leave them proud so much as emptied. Their king was dead. His cause was dead. His god had taken him, if gods ever took anything without first making men suffer for the honor.

Davos Seaworth lay unconscious with grievous wounds, and the red priest who had guided Stannis’s final fire had paid with his own life. The few knights still able to stand gathered the remaining men, fewer than five hundred, and made the only decision left that had shape and meaning. They would take the black.

Some did it for Stannis, that his last sacrifice would remain tied to the Wall he had defended. Some did it to wash away what sins they thought they had committed there. Some simply had nowhere else to go, which had been a fine old reason for joining the Night’s Watch since time began pretending to be history. From that day, the last hard remnant of Baratheon power in the North passed into black cloaks and cold duty.

The Westerlands and Riverlands host had not escaped the scythe. Arthur Greyoak had marched north with forty thousand men, including the riverlords’ levies and his Battanian companies. After Moat Cailin, the Dreadfort, and the slaughter beneath the Wall, fewer than fifteen thousand remained combat-ready, and many of those were held together by linen, stubbornness, and lies told by maesters with tired eyes.

His best troops had bled the most. The Sworn Men and the Champions of Ophena had held where other lines might have broken, and men pay dearly for being useful. More than half were dead or wounded. The five Sworn Men who had thrown themselves before the Night King were gone, frozen where they had fallen, their crude obsidian spears shattered around them. The survivors spoke of them quietly. Loud grief was for fresher losses. Some dead required silence.

Jon Snow remained near death. He had been pulled from the snow with Longclaw still locked in his frozen hand, his body stiff, his breathing so faint that more than one man thought him a corpse until Maester Luwin cursed them for standing in his light. Arya Stark lived as well, though barely. Strange blue-red frost had bitten into one side of her body, and the wound from the Night King’s broken power was unlike any the maesters had seen. That did not stop them from trying. Maesters adore a chance to fail with confidence.

Kator, Beland, Smith, Denys Mallister, and many other commanders had taken wounds of their own. Some walked. Some were carried. Some gave orders from beds because command, like infection, is hard to kill once rooted.

Daenerys Targaryen had lost Viserion.

There were no softer words that changed it. Drogon and Rhaegal lived, but both were badly hurt and spent beyond anything she had ever seen in them. The Unsullied and the Dothraki bloodriders who had fought at the Wall had suffered losses, though their numbers had been partly preserved by the shortness of their engagement and the desperate discipline of their commanders.

Daenerys herself withdrew into a small stone chamber in Castle Black and barred the door to almost everyone. Grey Worm stood guard outside, silent as a carved spear. Ser Barristan Selmy remained near him, white cloak stained and face grave. Her other counsellors were far away on Dragonstone. Tyrion would have found words, and words were not always mercy.

For days, Daenerys saw no one. She had killed the Night King. She had ended the Long Night. She had also watched one child die, rise, and die again, had held a sword of ice and dragonfire, and had felt victory taste like ash on her tongue. No courtly phrase could dress that wound. Even a queen must sometimes sit alone with the ruins of what she has won.

The surviving leaders met because grief does not excuse administration. It should, perhaps, but the world has never been that kind.

Arthur Greyoak came despite his wounds and exhaustion. Lord Commander Jason Mallister was carried in, pale and bandaged, stubbornly alive. Davos Seaworth joined after waking, looking older than any smuggler had a right to look. Ser Barristan spoke for Daenerys, with Grey Worm beside him, though neither presumed to speak of her heart. Around them stood black brothers, northern captains, Westerlands officers, and men whose titles had survived better than their bodies.

The decisions were brief and practical. The Wall could not be abandoned. The surviving Night’s Watch would hold it, joined by the remnants of Stannis’s host who took the black, and by volunteers from the North, mostly Umbers, Mormonts, and men from houses who had learned too well that old stories sometimes come walking with blue eyes. Arthur promised the Westerlands and Riverlands would continue to send food, timber, weapons, and tools until the Watch could breathe again.

Recruitment would begin at once. The North would provide what men it could spare. Ravens would go south asking the Seven Kingdoms to remember why the Wall existed, which would meet politics, and delay, and some lord asking who was expected to pay for the cloaks.

Arthur’s main host would depart as soon as the wounded could be moved. The reason was plain enough. His army had been mauled. The Westerlands had been emptied to feed the northern war. The Golden Tooth, Lannisport, the passes, the coast, and the roads all needed men again. The Reach watched. The Ironborn were wounded but not gone. King’s Landing remained King’s Landing, which was to say a nest of knives pretending to be a capital.

He would leave two thousand picked men under Kator once the man could sit a horse without bleeding through the saddle. They would aid the Wall, keep communication open with the North, and remind anyone watching that Arthur Greyoak did not abandon allies the moment bards stopped paying attention.

Jon and Arya would be moved when the maesters allowed it. Winterfell was nearer, but the Westerlands had better stores, better surgeons, and fewer northern lords with opinions about bastards and girls who stabbed things too successfully. The final decision would wait upon their condition. Waiting, as always, made itself useful by being miserable.

Daenerys emerged after several days. She was thinner, paler, and colder around the eyes. Grief had not weakened her. It had tempered her into something less bright and less forgiving. She announced that she would return to Dragonstone with her remaining forces and her two wounded dragons. The old Targaryen fortress could shelter her, and from there she could gather the strength left to her across the Narrow Sea.

She did not speak of the Iron Throne.

She thanked the Watch, the North, and the Westerlands for their sacrifices in a voice dry as old parchment. She promised she would remember the Wall. Then she withdrew. It was not ingratitude. It was a woman cutting herself free from a place where too much of her had died.

Thus the alliance that had stood against death began to part as alliances often do once the shared terror is gone. Not with betrayal. Not yet. Simply with the pull of different wounds, different lands, different duties, and the old, tiresome fact that victory never abolishes consequence.

The Westerlands host turned south bearing wounded men, broken banners, and carts full of dead to be burned or buried along the road. Daenerys’s ships gathered her surviving soldiers from Eastwatch-by-the-Sea and raised sail for Dragonstone, while Drogon and Rhaegal flew low and slow above the fleet like scarred shadows. Behind them, the Wall remained, black cloaks moving along its battered heights, cold memories frozen into every crack.

The Long Night had ended.

Mankind needed only a few days to resume being a problem.
