ASOIAF/Game Of Thrones: Ruler of Batannia

Viserion’s body rested on the ruined snowfield, white scales dulled beneath blue frost and grey ash. He had crossed the Narrow Sea with Daenerys. He had flown above armies, cities, and ships. He had been born from stone, fire, blood, and a woman’s refusal to die where wiser people had expected her to. Now he lay at the foot of the Wall like some great pale offering to winter.

Daenerys could not breathe.

She felt the place where he had been inside her, and found only cold. It was not silence. Silence could be peaceful. This was absence with teeth. The bond that had tied her to Viserion had not been cut cleanly. It had been torn, fouled, and left bleeding in some part of her that no maester could name and no septon could pray whole.

Drogon circled unsteadily, roaring in grief and rage. Rhaegal answered him with a thinner cry, wounded in a way no spear had made. Their brother lay below, and yet something of him remained wrong upon the air. Dragons did not have words for desecration. Their bodies knew it all the same.

Arthur looked from Daenerys to the field. The cold gathering around Viserion’s corpse was different now. The Night King had lowered his sword, but not his will. His cracked right arm rose slowly, fingers opening toward the fallen dragon.

“No,” Arthur said.

The word was quiet and useless. Men said quiet, useless things often in the face of horror. It kept them from screaming, for the first moment at least.

A sound came from Viserion’s corpse.

It was not a roar. It was the grind of freezing flesh, the crack of bone forced to remember movement, the brittle shift of ice growing through what had once been living. Men along the Wall stepped back. Some prayed. Others forgot every god they had ever claimed and simply stared.

Deep within Viserion’s empty eye sockets, two blue flames opened.

Daenerys made a sound then, small and broken, worse than any scream.

The dead dragon moved.

One claw scraped across charred ice. Then another. His head lifted slowly, jerkily, as if some cruel hand tugged at strings fastened to bone. Ice clung to his wings in jagged plates. His white scales had turned grey and blue, translucent in places, sickly in others. Frost smoked from his nostrils. The fire that had lived in his throat was gone. In its place gathered cold, pale and hungry.

He rose.

Not gracefully. Not as Viserion had once risen, proud and beautiful and full of terrible life. This thing stood with stiffness, with wrong angles, with the patience of death wearing a beloved shape. His wings opened, skeletal beneath ice, and a storm of frozen shards spun around him.

An ice dragon, men would call it later.

Daenerys stared at him. Her child. Not her child. Viserion. Not Viserion. The contradiction split her mind like a blade. The pain of his death had been vast, but this was fouler. The enemy had not merely killed him. It had used him. It had taken love, blood, fire, and miracle, and turned them into mockery.

“No,” she whispered. “This is not possible.”

Possible or not, it stood below.

Drogon roared, but fear cut through his rage. Rhaegal wheeled away and back again, unable to decide whether to attack or mourn. They knew the scent. Beneath the cold, beneath the death, beneath the Night King’s will, there remained something of their brother. That made it worse. Familiarity had become a weapon.

On the Wall, despair moved faster than any order. Men who had stood before wights, White Walkers, ice towers, and screaming cold now looked as if the last plank beneath their feet had broken. The dragons had been hope made flesh. Larger than banners, older than crowns, impossible to ignore. And now one had died before them and risen for the enemy.

A black brother dropped his spear. No one mocked him. Several men looked ready to do the same. One of Stannis’s knights began murmuring the Lord of Light’s prayer with the desperate rhythm of a man counting heartbeats. Free folk stared in horror, the old stories becoming too real to remain useful. Even the Battanian oathkeepers fell silent, their songs strangled in their throats.

Arthur felt the cold settle over them all. Not the Night King’s sorcery alone, but something more dangerous: the collapse of meaning. Men could endure terrible odds if they believed the shape of the world still held. The Night King had just shown them that even dragonfire could be killed, stolen, and turned. Hope did not always die when beaten. Sometimes it died when humiliated.

He forced himself to look away from the dragon and toward the queen.

Daenerys sat atop Drogon like a woman carved from grief. The Stormborn, the Mother of Dragons, the last hope of House Targaryen, the queen who had crossed seas with fire at her back, seemed suddenly small against the sky. Not weak. Never that. Broken, perhaps, and those were not the same thing. Broken things could cut.

Arthur understood the danger of that almost as well as the Night King did.

The pale king lowered his ruined arm and turned his gaze across the Wall. His eyes passed over Drogon and Rhaegal, both exhausted and wounded. They passed over the silent defenders, over the broken ramparts, over the last burning lanes of dragonfire guttering at the foot of the ice. At last they seemed to settle on Daenerys.

Even from that distance, Arthur understood the message.

Your fire is mine if I wish it. Your children are meat for winter. Your hope was only another thing to take.

The Night King raised his left hand and gave a small command.

The dead dragon answered.

Viserion spread his ice-crusted wings and beat them once. Snow and ash burst outward. The second beat lifted his forequarters from the ground. The third carried him into the air, awkwardly at first, then with growing strength. He did not fly like a living dragon. There was no joy in it, no hunger, no temper. He flew as a corpse obeying a will colder than thought.

His mouth opened.

No flame came. Only a pale blue radiance gathered between his jaws, cold enough to make the fires below shrink.

“Down!” Arthur shouted. “Everyone down from the exposed parapets. Shields over heads. Scorpions to the dragon. Now.”

Men moved slowly at first, stunned beyond proper fear. Then Kator’s voice crashed over them like an axe. “Move, you sons of mud and mothers. Move, or die staring.”

That worked better than hope. Insults often did.

Crews dragged scorpions around. Archers nocked dragonglass and ordinary arrows alike, because desperation was poor at sorting inventory. Night’s Watch men ducked behind merlons. Battanian shields rose in overlapping ranks. Free folk pulled the wounded back from the edge.

Daenerys did not move.

Drogon roared toward the dead Viserion, but the sound lacked certainty. Rhaegal circled lower, shaking frost from his wounded leg. Both living dragons were exhausted, wounded, and grieving. The dead dragon climbed between them and the Wall like a blasphemy given wings.

“Daenerys!” Arthur shouted.

She did not answer.

The Night King had done more than gain a weapon. He had struck at the heart of the queen who might have brought fire to the living. He had turned her strength into accusation, her love into terror, and her child into the herald of his counterattack. It was the sort of cruelty that showed intelligence. Arthur had always hated intelligent enemies. They made survival feel like work.

The dead dragon rose higher, pale blue light brightening in his throat.

Arthur felt the green mark beneath his skin pulse once, faint and urgent. The Wall behind him seemed to answer, deep in the old ice. The oath stirred. The green pulse, wounded but not gone, trembled beneath all that cold.

Ice had stolen fire.

That did not mean fire was finished. It meant fire needed something more than pride.

Arthur turned toward the men nearest him, toward Kator, Smith, Denys Mallister, Jon Snow half-supported near the stair, and Stannis watching from below with fever-bright eyes.

“Hold the line,” he said. “Whatever comes, hold.”

Above them, Viserion opened his jaws wider.

The blue light spilled out.

The winter of despair had found wings, and it was coming for the Wall.
