ASOIAF/Game Of Thrones: Ruler of Batannia

The Night King’s fury rolled across the battlefield like a cold wave born beyond the end of the world. There was no patience in him now, no careful spending of strength, no silent weighing of men and dragons as pieces on a cyvasse board. His gaze held only one thing: the silver-haired woman kneeling upon the snow, one hand pressed to the head of the fallen ice dragon, a faint red glow burning from her skin against the blue cold he had made.

Daenerys Targaryen.

He took a step, and the frozen earth split beneath his foot. Cracks raced outward in pale lines, carrying frost with them. He took another, and his shape blurred into motion, swift as lightning and twice as unnatural. The great sword of ice in his hand was cracked from Stannis’s last fire and Drogon’s wrath, yet it still shone with a cold that seemed able to pierce flesh, steel, and soul together. Its point was aimed at Daenerys’s heart.

“Your Grace!” men shouted from the Wall. “Behind you!”

The cries came too late. Distance made cowards of warnings, as it often did. Drogon and Rhaegal were behind Daenerys, wounded and spent from battle, their attention divided between their mother and the dead white dragon she was trying to reach. They saw the pale king coming and roared in alarm, but their bodies answered a heartbeat too slowly. One heartbeat was often enough to crown a king or bury him. Westeros had built much of its history on worse timing.

Then a voice broke from the flank of the field.

“Jon. Now.”

It was low, rough with pain, but full of the kind of resolve that has already made peace with death and is therefore free to be very inconvenient.

From a trench half-buried beneath collapsed ice, broken wights, and shards from the fallen towers, figures burst from the snow like wolves from a drift. They had been hidden there through cold, blood, and terror, waiting for the one moment when the Night King’s whole will would narrow toward Daenerys. It was not a formation meant to survive. It was a trap made of living men, and living men are poor materials for traps unless they have stopped caring about the price.

Jon Snow came first.

His face was nearly as white as the snow around him. The bandages about his chest were soaked through with blood, and each breath came harshly, dragging pain behind it. The wounds left from Howling Gorge and all that had followed should have kept him far from any field. Yet his hand was steady upon Longclaw, the Valyrian steel blade that had once bitten the Night King’s wrist. In the sword’s grey light there was something dull and hungry, stirred by grief, duty, and that peculiar northern stubbornness which made men mistake doom for an appointment they meant to keep.

Arya Stark moved beside him. Blood darkened her leathers. Her eyes were fierce and empty, not with madness, but with the terrible stillness of one who had looked into death often enough to stop blinking. She carried no lord’s sword, no named blade sung in halls. In her left hand was the dragonglass dagger Old Harth had honed to a cruel edge, the same black glass that had disrupted the Night King’s working. In her right was an obsidian sickle taken from the Westerlands stores, crescent-shaped and dark as a moonless night.

Behind them came five massive figures.

The Sworn Men had once been ten. Now five remained. They wore no heavy armor, no shields, no proud harness for men who expected bards to remember them. They were wrapped in hides against the cold, exposed skin smeared with ash and grease. In their hands were long, crude spears, made from stout poles bound with great shards of obsidian. Hasty weapons. Ugly weapons. Disposable weapons, though that last truth applied as much to the men as to the spears.

They crouched low in a loose arc, the points angled forward. All defense had been abandoned for one purpose: to put every breath, every wound, every last muscle into a single thrust.

Arthur Greyoak had given the order with little more than a glance and the smallest hand signal. There had been no time for speeches, no time for clever plans. He could not strip the Wall of men, could not stop Daenerys, and could not outrun the Night King. He had only Jon, Arya, and five Sworn Men already living on borrowed seconds. Their task was not to kill the Night King. It was not even to maim him. Their task was to buy a moment.

A moment for Daenerys. A moment for Jon. A moment for the living.

The Night King did not expect them. That much showed in the smallest break of movement. Not fear. Nothing so generous. Merely the instinct of battle reacting to an obstacle where none should have been. Yet he was moving too swiftly and with too much purpose to stop cleanly. His sword remained pointed toward Daenerys. His stride carried him into the waiting arc.

The five Sworn Men roared.

It was not a song, not anymore. It was Battania stripped down to blood and breath. They drove forward from five angles, spears thrusting toward the Night King’s chest, belly, ribs, and ruined right arm. There was no elegance in it. Elegance has few friends in desperate work. There was only power and the will to spend themselves fully.

The Night King’s eyes flickered blue.

For the first time, something like disdain crossed his cold, perfect face.

He did not bother to parry. The field of death about him expanded.

Five sharp cracks rang across the snow. The shafts shattered before they touched him, breaking apart like rotten wood struck against stone. The obsidian heads left faint white marks upon the ice armor and then bounced away or splintered uselessly. The Sworn Men struck the invisible wall behind their weapons and were hurled backward, blood and ice spilling from their mouths. They crashed into the snow dozens of feet away. Frost crept over them at once. One twitched. Another tried to rise and failed. Then none of them moved.

Their charge had failed.

Their charge had also worked.

The shattered obsidian, the violent interruption, and the sheer audacity of five mortals throwing themselves into the path of winter caused the Night King the smallest hesitation. His gaze moved for less than a breath. His killing line shifted. His attention, for one sliver of time, left Daenerys and took in the ants that had dared sting him.

Jon Snow roared Arya’s name.

He did not command her. He declared her.
