ASOIAF/Game Of Thrones: Ruler of Batannia

The southern war entered by way of a careless western tongue.

“Cersei should have been dragged from that throne long ago,” said one of Diana’s friends, a lady whose husband had old grievances against the Reach. “Lord Arthur recognizing the Targaryen queen was the only sensible course. Let Highgarden choke on it. Perhaps now those roses will think twice before blockading us.”

Some women murmured approval. Others looked into their tea as if answers might float there.

Lady Margaret’s cup touched its saucer with a soft click. “Queen Daenerys has dragons, and no one can deny her courage at the Wall. Still, when crowns quarrel, fields burn. The Riverlands know that better than most. Our lands cannot bear another great war so soon. Does Lord Arthur intend further steps?”

The question was courteous. The fear beneath it was not. We have just sworn to your husband. Will he now drag us into a dragon’s war? Will our sons die for a queen on an island? Will the rivers burn again because great houses need proof of themselves?

Lady Leonie did not speak this time. She watched.

Diana opened her mouth, but Alianna lifted one hand. A small gesture. Enough.

“I share your concern,” Alianna said. “No mother, wife, sister, or mistress of a household wishes to see war come near her own doors. Lord Arthur’s recognition of Queen Daenerys was not a thirst for battle. It was a way to shape the board before others shaped it for us.”

The hall grew quieter.

“Cersei in King’s Landing is hostile already. The Reach presses our border. Euron Greyjoy has struck at Dragonstone and may strike at any coast that looks weak. Silence would not have made us safe. It would only have invited others to decide our place. By recognizing Daenerys’s claim, Lord Arthur divides his enemies, opens the road to trade and possible cooperation with Dragonstone, and denies Cersei the comfort of pretending all law sits beneath her.”

Lady Margaret listened closely.

“The foundation remains our own strength,” Alianna said. “Not a raven sent to Dragonstone. Not a line in a proclamation. Grain in our granaries. Men trained in the yards. Roads guarded. Ports open. Houses reconciled where they can be and restrained where they must be. A realm strong enough that war thinks carefully before crossing its borders.”

She let that settle, then looked around the room. “As for us, our work is not smaller because it is quieter. We manage castles, households, accounts, servants, harvests, dowries, guest right, mourning, disputes among kin, and the thousand small decencies that keep men from returning to ruins. A stable rear is worth more than another banner in the wind. If our halls are orderly, our children prepared, our tenants fed, and our houses united, our husbands may face the storms beyond without fearing rot at home.”

If you spot this tale on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.

Alianna lifted her cup.

“You are gathered here today not merely for tea. You are proof that the west and the rivers may sit at one table. May the Seven protect our homes. May the war end far from our doors. May the Westerlands and Riverlands find peace and prosperity under Lord Arthur’s protection.”

For a heartbeat, no one moved. Then Lady Margaret raised her cup. Diana followed. One by one, every woman present did the same, even Leonie Lefford, though her smile was thin as a knife edge.

“May the Seven protect us,” they said.

The tea party continued.

The talk returned to cloth, gardens, childbed, singers, embroidery, and which fruits traveled poorly from Maidenpool. The smiles grew easier, though not necessarily truer. The earlier exchanges had left ripples in the room, and Alianna watched them move from woman to woman. Concern. Loyalty. Calculation. Resentment. Hope. Fear. All covered in silk and sweetened with honey.

She answered compliments, asked after children, remembered names, praised riverwork embroidery, spoke of western goldsmiths, and promised to inspect the designs for the Harvest Festival. She was, in every visible way, the proper lady of a great house: poised, courteous, composed, and gracious enough to make refusal seem like agreement.

Only the most observant might have noticed the occasional cold sharpness in her amber eyes, there and gone between blinks. Alianna saw more than gowns and jewels. She saw who leaned toward whom, who tightened fingers at which name, who spoke too warmly of unity, who said nothing when Cersei was cursed, who flinched at mention of dragons, who watched Jeyne Westerling as if old grief might still be useful.

This tea was only one of many battles to come. The integration of the Westerlands and Riverlands would not be won only with soldiers, ledgers, charters, and roads. It would be won in halls, nurseries, septs, gardens, marriage beds, mourning chambers, and rooms like this, where women smiled over porcelain while deciding what their husbands would hear when they returned to their pillows.

Men called such things softness because they lacked imagination.

Alianna knew better. Silk could bind. Tea could poison. A smile could open gates or close them.

When the gathering finally began to break apart, Lady Margaret clasped Alianna’s hands and thanked her for her hospitality. Diana was already speaking to two river ladies about festival seating. Lady Leonie curtsied with perfect courtesy and eyes that promised nothing. Jeyne lingered near a window, quiet and pale, watching them all as if seeing a court from very far away.

Alianna remained at the center until the last guest had gone. Only then did she allow her smile to fade.

The Golden Sun Hall seemed larger once empty. The crystal chandeliers still scattered light. The cups still gleamed. The scent of tea and sugared cakes remained, sweet over the colder trace of calculation.

Alianna touched the back of one chair where Lady Margaret had sat. The Riverlands were wounded, proud, frightened, and necessary. The west was rich, suspicious, bruised, and ambitious. Arthur meant to bind them with roads, soldiers, laws, and trade. She would have to bind what those could not reach.

She was Alianna Spicer, Lady of Casterly Rock, daughter of a house that had survived by knowing where power truly lay, granddaughter of a woman smallfolk had named witch because wisdom unsettled them. She had been given a place in the mountain. Now she would make that place hers.

Outside the windows, the sea shone bright as hammered gold.

Inside, the game went on, quieter than war and no less deadly.
