ASOIAF/Game Of Thrones: Ruler of Batannia

Golden Ear Valley struck Highgarden like a slap across a proud face.

The Reach had lost men before. All great houses had, though most preferred to remember the glorious dead and misplace the inconvenient ones. But this defeat had come too near their own border, against an enemy they had not long ago dismissed as half-starved western barbarians hiding behind river grain and mountain tricks. Randyll Tarly had been checked. Reach cavalry had been bloodied. The Bannermen Guard had not merely raided. It had stood in daylight and broken a trap laid by one of the south’s sternest commanders.

Anger followed shock, as it often does among the proud. Humiliation demanded company, and so blame came next. Lady Olenna Tyrell rebuked Tarly for failure, though even she knew incompetence was too easy a word. Tarly had been outmaneuvered by an enemy better trained and more flexible than expected. That truth was useful in private. In public, it was treacherous. The Reach could not afford to look weak before its lords, before Cersei, before Dorne, before Dragonstone, or before Arthur Greyoak, who would surely make use of any tremor he saw.

Olenna answered as the Queen of Thorns had always answered threats: by tightening her hand.

She did not shorten the line or sue for quiet. She ordered stricter mobilization across the Reach. More levies were called. Households loyal to Highgarden were pressed for men, horses, carts, grain, and coin. Merchant families and lesser vassals who had complained of losses from the blockade were informed, with exquisite courtesy and no room for refusal, that they would now contribute to the defense of the Reach in purse as well as patience. Another host would be formed, larger and better supplied. Pheasant Hall would be struck again. The castle would fall, and with it the myth of Arthur’s invincible green-cloaked army.

So Highgarden told itself.

Between Pheasant Hall and Old Oak, the brief silence after Golden Ear Valley broke beneath marching feet. Patrols resumed, stronger than before. Scouts crept through woods and gullies. Western hunters tested the new Reach lines. Reach archers answered. Men died in little fights no raven would bother naming. The war in the southwest did not subside. It settled into something meaner: attrition, pride, and will, all the ingredients of a long misery.

Yet the southwest was no longer the center of the board. It was only one fire among many.

While Arthur weighed caution at Casterly Rock, the war between Dragonstone and King’s Landing erupted fully.

Cersei Lannister had reached the end of such patience as she possessed, which was never a long road. Arthur’s public recognition of Daenerys’s claim, the clashes with the Reach, and the continued existence of a Targaryen queen with dragons wounded her pride and fed her fear in equal measure. A wiser ruler might have let her enemies bleed one another longer. Cersei had never trusted wisdom when fury was available.

At a small council made of loyalists, cowed men, and creatures clever enough to nod at the proper moments, she ordered a full assault upon Dragonstone. Objections were offered only in the safest possible shapes and died quickly. Coin borrowed from the Iron Bank, the remaining wealth of crown and Lannister loyalists, and promises written against future plunder were gathered into a single purpose. The Royal Fleet would sail. The Crownlands would provide men. The remnants of Baratheon and Lannister strength still tied to King’s Landing would march. And from across the Narrow Sea came the Golden Company.

They were old exiles, sellswords, Blackfyre ghosts, bankrupt knights, hard captains, and men whose loyalty had been bought so often it had become a trade rather than a flaw. Their heavy infantry and cavalry were famous on both sides of the sea, which meant half their reputation was true and the other half had been paid for in advance. Their arrival gave Cersei’s offensive weight, discipline, and a foreign edge.

On Dragonstone, Daenerys Targaryen emerged from grief slowly and not gently. Viserion’s death still lay inside her like a blade turned inward. Drogon and Rhaegal lived, but neither was whole. Euron’s foul weapons had left scars no maester understood. Yet Tyrion’s counsel, Varys’s whispers, Grey Worm’s loyalty, and Barristan’s steady honor helped pull her back toward the purpose that had carried her across the world. She had lost a child. She had killed the Night King. She had been attacked at her own gate. Now Cersei was coming.

The beaches of Dragonstone became killing grounds.

Under cover of the Royal Fleet, Cersei’s forces tried landing at several points along the island’s broken coast. The Golden Company led the hardest assaults, disciplined beneath bright banners and black armor, pushing toward narrow beaches, jagged volcanic shelves, and paths overlooked by defenders. The Unsullied met them in ranks of spears and shields as cold as iron. They did not break. They rarely even shouted. Men find that unsettling, being killed by soldiers who treat terror as poor manners.

Catapults from ships hurled stone and fire toward Dragonstone’s defenders. Scorpions and ballistae answered from the cliffs. Crossbows snapped from black rock. Golden Company charges crashed against Unsullied spear walls amid sulfur pools, steam vents, ash, and blood. Each day the beaches grew redder. Each night bodies were dragged from the tide or left for it, depending on who held the ground and how tired the living were.

The War of the Dragon and the Lion had passed beyond threat, blockade, and insult. It had become slaughter upon stone.

At sea, matters grew fouler still.

Euron Greyjoy, having tasted success in his ambush off Dragonstone, came more boldly into Cersei’s service. He brought Silence and the Ironborn ships still loyal to his madness, strengthened by strange devices, poisoned smoke, red-lit prows, and whatever dark tricks he had dragged back from the east. Cersei named him Grand Admiral, an empty title that would have made many men ridiculous. Euron wore ridiculousness like a crown and somehow made it more dangerous.

His fleet joined the Royal Fleet in earnest. They struck at Dragonstone’s supply lines, screened the landing forces, and used their unnatural weapons to threaten Drogon and Rhaegal whenever the dragons tried to rise. Red fumes drifted over water. Horns moaned from black decks. Beams of dark light lashed upward when the dragons flew too low. Daenerys’s fleet, made of hired Free City ships, loyalists, and defectors from the Iron Islands, was outnumbered and outmatched, pressed hard between royal discipline and Ironborn savagery.

Then Dorne moved.

Prince Doran Martell had watched long enough. He had warned, weighed, waited, and done what patient men do best: chosen the hour when everyone else was too busy bleeding to stop him. He ordered the Dornish fleet out from Sunspear, Planky Town, and lesser ports, placing command in the hands of Prince Oberyn, the Red Viper, who had returned from King’s Landing through quieter roads than any court song would mention.

The Dornish fleet could not match the Arbor or Royal Fleet ship for ship. It did not try. Its vessels were lighter, swifter, and crewed by sailors who knew the hot waters, hidden shoals, and treacherous currents between Dorne, the Stepstones, and the Narrow Sea. They came upon the battle not as a wall, but as knives.

To the surprise of many, though perhaps not the clever, Dorne struck on Dragonstone’s side.

Dornish ships cut into the flanks and rear of the Royal and Ironborn line, firing arrows wrapped in flame, hurling jars of burning oil, and loosing darts smeared with poisons for which Dorne had long enjoyed an uncharitable reputation. Boarding parties moved with curved blades and long spears, striking at exposed ships and withdrawing before heavier vessels could trap them. The Dornish fought like sand snakes upon water, quick, venomous, and deeply annoying to men who preferred enemies to stay where they were placed.

Oberyn himself sought Euron’s Silence.

Whether it was honor, hatred of sorcery, disgust for the Crow’s Eye, or simple appetite for a dangerous foe, no man could say. Likely all of them. The Red Viper had never been known for choosing one motive where several sharp ones would do.

Dorne’s entry shattered the sea war’s shape. The Royal Fleet and Ironborn were forced to divide their attention. Dragonstone’s ships found breathing room. From Blackwater Bay down toward the Stepstones, the sea became a confusion of fire, smoke, broken masts, grapnels, corpses, and banners that changed position too quickly for frightened sailors to understand who was winning.

Dorne did not stop at sea.

Almost as the fleet sailed, Dornish forces crossed the Boneway and moved into the Stormlands.

The Stormlands were vulnerable. Stannis Baratheon was dead at the Wall. His daughter Shireen, nominal heir to Storm’s End, was young and in Cersei’s grasp. Baratheon loyalists distrusted crown men. Crown men distrusted Baratheon loyalists. Houses such as Dondarrion and Caron stood uncertain, divided between old oaths, survival, and the very sensible desire not to be destroyed by whichever side won last. There was no single strong hand. Storm’s End still stood, but a castle is not a realm, no matter how much stone it has.

The Dornish did not hurl themselves at Storm’s End. That would have been heroic, and therefore suspect. Instead they moved through the Marches with speed and knowledge of hard country. Spearmen, light horse, and fierce fighters from desert and mountain struck weaker keeps, divided roads, seized towns with uncertain loyalties, and cut the land into smaller pieces. The Stormlands tried to answer, but without unified command, each resistance stood alone and was beaten alone.

Ravens flew to King’s Landing begging aid.

Cersei could spare little. Dragonstone consumed men, ships, coin, and attention. The sea had become a knife fight with Dorne in it. The Reach demanded support against Arthur. The crown could not answer every fire, which was awkward for a queen who had set so many.

Across Westeros, war spread like dry grass catching sparks.

In the southwest, the Reach and the Westerlands-Riverlands bled one another along Pheasant Hall, Old Oak, and the borderlands, a war of attrition hardening by the day. In the east, King’s Landing, the Golden Company, crown forces, and Euron’s Ironborn hammered at Dragonstone, where Daenerys’s Unsullied held stone with spears and wounded dragons watched from volcanic heights. At sea, royal ships, Ironborn, Dragonstone vessels, and the Dornish fleet tore the Narrow Sea into a battlefield of flame. In the south, Dorne rolled into the Stormlands while Storm’s End called for help that might not come.

The Vale remained quiet, which meant Littlefinger was thinking. That was never comforting.

The North lay cold, desolate, and exhausted, alive but unable to do more than endure. The Iron Islands stirred with division, Euron’s madness driving some captains toward him and others toward Asha or Victarion, especially as western trade offered fish, salt, and coin to those willing to behave like merchants instead of sea-borne headaches.

And Arthur Greyoak, Lord of Casterly Rock, Warden of the West, and Lord Paramount of the Trident, found that Golden Ear Valley had not freed him from the vortex. It had merely raised him high enough to see how many storms were coming.

He had to face Highgarden’s retaliation, protect trade from the naval war, watch Dorne’s ambitions in the south, keep the Riverlands from slipping toward Baelish or old loyalties, measure Daenerys against Cersei, and continue rebuilding lands that had already paid too much for every lord’s ambition.

Westeros had entered a true War of the Seven Kingdoms.

Every faction now fought for survival, vengeance, ambition, fear, or the right to call its own hunger lawful. On such a burning continent, standing aside was no longer a strategy. It was a child’s wish whispered while the house caught fire.

Arthur had wanted time.

The realm answered with war.
