ASOIAF/Game Of Thrones: Ruler of Batannia

The dead wings of Viserion cut through the leaden sky, and no warm wind followed. Cold came in his wake instead, sharp enough to sting the eyes and leave frost crawling over steel. Blue fire burned in the dead dragon’s sockets, and wherever that gaze passed, men felt as if winter had leaned close enough to breathe against their bones. Below, the Night King stood upon a field of scorched earth and frozen ruin, as still as a carved god, and his newest trophy proclaimed what words could not.

Drogon and Rhaegal cried out above the Wall. Their voices were lower now, strained with grief, rage, and something dangerously close to fear. They knew Viserion’s scent. They knew the shape of him in the sky. They also knew the cold thing wearing him now was not their brother, not truly. That confusion hurt them in a way no spear could manage properly. Spears, at least, had the courtesy to be simple.

Daenerys remained on Drogon’s back, but the queen who had arrived with fire in her blood seemed hollowed. Her spine had bent. Her silver-gold hair, whipped by the bitter wind, looked dim beneath the night. Violet eyes stared down at the dead white dragon as though part of her soul had fallen with him and been frozen into that ruined body. A mother could survive the death of a child and still be broken by seeing him rise for another.

Upon the Wall, silence spread like sickness. The Battanian songs had ceased. Black brothers of the Night’s Watch gripped their weapons with stiff white fingers. Northmen stared in numb horror. Even Greatjon Umber, who had a voice made for roaring and a body that had spent sixty years refusing to stop, could only breathe hard through his teeth, growling low in his throat without finding words. Some of Stannis’s knights muttered prayers. Others let their blades dip, not from cowardice, but from the weight of seeing hope turned into an enemy.

The wights below stirred again. Dragonfire had checked them, but not ended them. The dead seemed to feel their master’s will and the shame he had thrown upon the living. Bone scraped against bone. Frozen hands clawed over blackened ground. The tide began to gather itself once more.

Collapse stood very near.

Then Arthur Greyoak spoke.

“Warriors of Battania.”

He did not shout until his throat tore. He did not wave his sword like some tourney knight begging for a song. He stood upon the battlements before Castle Black’s main keep, facing the dead dragon, the Night King, and the countless eyes behind him. There was still frost on his cloak from the godswood, and some faint green glimmer seemed to cling to him, too slight to be called light and too strange to be dismissed. His eyes were calm, which made them almost more unsettling than anger would have been.

“We swore an oath once,” he said. His voice carried clearly over wind and fear, as if the Wall itself wished to listen. “Not to conquest. Not to glory. Not even to victory, for victory was never promised to men honest enough to know the world.”

His gaze moved over the Battanian Oathkeepers in their dark green leather, scarred, bloodied, cold, yet not broken. “We swore to the mountains and forests. To guard the many shapes of life. To hold balance against the forces that devour. To guide the lost through disaster and change until the next dawn comes. That was the oath beneath the name Battania. Not a banner. Not a kingdom. A promise.”

He raised one hand toward the dead dragon and the pale host beneath him. “What is a spark? It is not some lord’s fire in a hearth. It is not a king’s crown, nor a dragon’s flame, nor a singer’s pretty lie. It is the will that does not yield when reason says yielding would be easier. It is the courage to do the thing that must be done when all comfort has abandoned the field. It is the stubborn belief that even in the deepest winter, dawn still has a road back into the world.”

He struck the ice beneath his boot with the point of his blade. “Look beneath your feet. This Wall has stood for eight thousand years. It does not stand for one king, one house, one castle, or one realm’s vanity. It stands between life and death. It was raised by sacrifice, craft, wisdom, fear, and hope. The Night King would erase that line. He would make the world quiet, colorless, songless, and cold. What he did to Viserion is what he means to do to all things that breathe. He turns life into death. He turns hope into mockery. He takes what we love and makes it serve his silence.”

Arthur’s sword moved toward the sky, where Daenerys sat upon Drogon. “Look at our ally. Her child was slain and fouled before us all. Yet Drogon still flies. Rhaegal still flies. Her rage has not gone out, because grief alone will not bring her child back, and surrender will only give the Night King more children to steal.”

His voice lowered again, and somehow that made every word heavier. “We are the sparks. We stand here with flesh, blood, steel, wood, dragonglass, and whatever poor courage the gods forgot to tax. Every breath we hold buys the world behind us another breath. Every arrow, every song, every shield raised against the dead tells this winter one thing: life does not kneel easily.”

If you spot this narrative on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.

Arthur drew the unsharpened Valyrian steel sword Old Harth had given him and lifted it high. The crest along the blade caught what little light remained, dull and ghostly against the storm. “In the name of the mountains and forests. In the name of the dead who brought us here and the living who may yet see spring. We may die tonight. But if we die, our blood will feed roots beneath the snow. Our deaths will be kindling. Let the dead learn that even ashes can remember warmth.”

He pointed the blade toward Viserion, who circled closer with blue light gathering in his throat. “For the oath. For life. For the dawn.”

For one heartbeat, nothing answered him.

Then Kator stepped forward. The leader of the Oathkeepers looked half carved from blood and exhaustion. His chest rose and fell. Wounds had opened again beneath the leather and mail, but his eyes had found their fire.

“Ha!”

The sound was rough, torn from the bottom of him. Another answered. Then a third. The Battanian Oathkeepers straightened one by one, gripping cracked shields and broken axes, and the dying sparks in their eyes flared anew. They did not sing as they had before. There was no time for full songs, no breath for all the old verses. They beat hafts and fists against shields, against breastplates, against the Wall itself, and their voices rose in deep, harsh pulses.

“By blood. By root. By oath. Until death.”

The Night’s Watch followed. Black brothers struck gloved fists against their chests and took up the cry in their own rough northern voices. “For the Watch. Until death.” Northmen joined next, Umbers, Mormonts, Glovers, mountain men, and all the rest who understood nothing of Battania’s old oath but understood enough of life, dawn, and refusing to be meat for winter. “For the North. For the Starks. For the living.”

The Free Folk answered with howls. Their bone clubs and stone axes rose above their heads. They had hated the Wall, hated kneelers, hated crows, hated being told where the world ended. Yet death had come for them too, and even old hatreds had the sense to look embarrassed before extinction.

The silence upon the Wall broke. Roars filled the night, growing, joining, becoming something thicker than sound. It rolled over the battlements and down the ice, a ragged human defiance hurled at dead things that had forgotten how to answer. For the first time since Viserion rose, the living sounded alive.

Daenerys heard it.

At first the roar reached her like something from far away. She had been sinking into grief, into the blue fire in Viserion’s eyes, into the impossible cruelty of what had been done. Then the voices below struck her like heat. She looked down and saw the defenders on the Wall roaring as though each throat meant to tear a path through winter. She saw Arthur Greyoak standing with his sword raised, small against the storm and the dead dragon, yet somehow terrible in his stillness.

It was not hunger for power she saw on those faces. Not the shining madness of men chasing glory. Not even the simple wish to survive, though that was there too. It was something older and more naked. The willingness to stand before destruction for a meaning larger than one’s own skin. She had seen a shadow of it in Slaver’s Bay, when chains broke and men remembered they were men. She had crossed the Narrow Sea for a throne, but had she crossed only for cold iron? Had she wanted a chair, or a world where her children, the children she had never had except in wing and flame, might be free?

The thing below was the answer to every dream she hated. A world without choice. Without color. Without warmth. Without song. A realm of obedient dead.

Drogon felt the roar too. He raised his head, and this time his cry was not only pain. Rhaegal circled nearer, fire beginning to grow once more in his throat. Their strength was nearly spent, their bodies wounded, but the sound from the Wall stirred something that even the Night King had not yet stolen.

“Your Grace!” Arthur’s voice reached her again from below. It was not quite command this time. More invitation. More challenge. “Do you hear them? This is the spark. Small. Fragile. Absurdly stubborn. The Night King can kill us. He can foul dragons. But he has not killed this.”

He pointed his blade toward the dead white dragon. “Your child has been desecrated. Yet look into him. Beneath that blue fire. Beneath the cold. Is there nothing left of Viserion? No pride? No pain? No echo of the blood that answered you?”

Daenerys turned sharply toward Viserion.

The blue fire in his eyes burned with the Night King’s will. His wings were crusted in ice. His throat glowed with dead cold. Yet beneath all of it, faint as a candle seen through snow and tears, she felt something. A thread. Pain. Confusion. A bond almost drowned, but not gone.

Viserion.

Her child was dead. Yet perhaps not wholly lost. Or perhaps that was madness. Daenerys had never lacked for madness in her blood. For once, she was grateful.

“Join us,” Arthur called. “Not for conquest. Not for vengeance alone. For cleansing. For release. Let dragonfire answer not as ruin, but as mercy. Tell the Night King that love and life cannot be made his without a fight.”

Daenerys drew a breath. The cold burned in her lungs and cleared her head. She looked at Arthur, at the roaring Wall, at Drogon beneath her, at Rhaegal beside her, and then at the dead thing that had been Viserion. Fire returned to her eyes, but it was not the same fire as before. Grief burned there. So did rage. So did love, pride, and a purpose wider than the Iron Throne.

She straightened upon Drogon’s back.

“Drogon. Rhaegal,” she whispered through the bond. “Do you hear them? They call to us. Viserion calls to us.” Her hand pressed against Drogon’s neck. “This time we do not fight for a throne. Not for House Targaryen. Not even for vengeance. We fight for the living. We fight to free our child.”

Drogon roared.

Rhaegal answered.

Their flames gathered again, brighter and hotter than exhaustion should have allowed. Below, Arthur lowered his blade toward the field and shouted with all the force left in him.

“Battania! For the oath. Everyone, for the dawn. Kill!”

The Wall answered as one.
