ASOIAF/Game Of Thrones: Ruler of Batannia

Jon did not rush the Night King’s heart or throat. He threw himself sideways, low to the ground, sliding across the snow with Longclaw dragging behind him. His intent was not to strike like a knight, nor to stand before the enemy like some gallant fool carved for a song. He aimed his wounded body at the Night King’s leg.

Arya moved as he did.

For an instant they were children again only in that old, impossible understanding siblings sometimes share before words ruin it. They had not rehearsed this, not truly. They had seen the same opening, the same wound, the same death coming for Daenerys, and answered together. Jon became weight and obstruction. Arya became speed.

The Night King sensed her. He sensed the dragonglass and obsidian, small and ugly as the weapons were, and the old distaste their substance stirred in him. His left hand began to move. Cold gathered to swat her aside, freeze her, crush the life from her bones before she could come near.

Then Jon struck his leg.

He hit the Night King’s left calf with all the strength left in him. It should have done nothing. Against that tall pale body, Jon was little more than wounded flesh hurled at ice. The cold took him at once. Frost climbed his side, his arm, his throat. Blood burst from his mouth and froze against his lips. But before sight left him, he drove Longclaw upward with the last obedience of his hand.

The Valyrian steel point found the back of the Night King’s left knee.

It pierced only a little. An inch, perhaps less. Not enough to wound a man fatally, much less the thing before him. But Longclaw was not common steel, and the place was thinly armored. The blade bit. Cold surged down the metal and into Jon’s hand. He lost all feeling in his fingers, then his arm, then half his body. Yet the Night King’s stride broke.

He stumbled.

Only for the blink of an eye. Only enough to shift the weight of him, to open his right side, to turn perfection into movement and movement into flaw. In battle, perfection dies of such discourtesies.

Arya came in under the right arm.

She moved like something boneless, sliding through the gap Jon had made. She did not leap for the throat. She did not try for the head. A head made for legends, certainly, but legends were rarely practical. Her eyes had never left the wound in the Night King’s right arm, the old wound Jon had opened, the wound Stannis’s holy fire had worsened, where cracked ice armor exposed a chaos of deep blue and dark red power beneath.

Her left hand drove the dragonglass dagger into the deepest part of that fracture.

There was no ring of metal. No bright heroic clash. The blade sank with a sickening sound, like a hot knife pushed into frozen fat. The power within the wound reacted at once. Blue and red light boiled together, recoiling from the black glass. A blast of cold and foul energy erupted over Arya, freezing one side of her body and splashing her skin with strange blue-red crystals. She made a sound low in her throat, more animal than human, but her hand did not loosen. She twisted the dagger deeper.

At the same time, the obsidian sickle in her right hand cut upward across the inside of the Night King’s right elbow. The edge was not as deadly as dragonglass, but it disrupted the cold magic flowing through the joint. The crack it made was shallow. It was enough.

The Night King screamed.

It was the first scream of true pain he had given them. The sound tore through the battlefield like thousands of frozen souls breaking apart. The dead faltered. Men on the Wall froze where they stood, this time not from sorcery but from the shock of hearing agony in a thing they had begun to believe beyond it.

His right arm convulsed. The wound spread outward from the dragonglass dagger, cracks racing beneath the ice armor. Plates shattered and fell away. Beneath them, the body was like black ice veined with violent light, splitting from shoulder to wrist. Blue, red, and a dark greenish gleam writhed together in the fracture, struggling not to come apart.

The great ice sword flew from his grasp and spun into the snow some distance away. Cracks ran across its blade the moment it struck, and it gave a thin sound, almost like a lament.

The Night King staggered back half a step.

Half a step. It was the first ground he had given all night.

Arya was flung away by the eruption from the wound. She flew like a rag doll, blood and ice spraying from her mouth, and struck the snow hard enough to vanish into it for a moment. Before the blast took her fully, she screamed Jon’s name.

Jon did not answer.

He lay near the Night King’s leg, frozen into a half-kneeling shape, hand still locked around Longclaw’s hilt. Frost had sealed his cloak, hair, and skin. His eyes were shut. The blade remained lodged behind the Night King’s knee like a final insult from a man too stubborn to die politely.

Across the battlefield, every gaze turned. The fighting upon the Wall faltered. Wights stood leaderless for a heartbeat. White Walkers halted, their pale faces angled toward their wounded king. Drogon and Rhaegal roared from the snowfield, shock and fury mingled in their voices.

Daenerys opened her eyes.

The red glow had not left her. It still clung to her hand, to the marks upon her wrist, to the bond she had pushed into Viserion’s ruined skull. But now she saw Jon frozen where he had fallen, Arya crumpled in the snow, the five Sworn Men lying dead in frost, and the Night King reeling with his right arm collapsing around the dagger buried in it.

Then she saw the opening.

The pain in his arm had drawn his body wide. His chest armor, fractured by dragonfire, holy light, and the chaos of his own wound, had split in fine lines. Beneath it, deep in the ice of him, something pulsed. Not a heart. Not as men had hearts. A core. A center. The place all his cold returned to, and perhaps the place from which it ruled.

Daenerys’s grief sharpened into a thought so clear it felt like a blade quenched in snow.

This is the moment.

She did not look again at Jon or Arya. Perhaps she could not. To look would be to feel, and to feel too much would shatter the thin, terrible resolve that had come to her. She tore her hand from Viserion’s head and ran toward the fallen ice sword.

She had never been a swordswoman. No one had trained her for this. Her weapons had been dragons, names, mercy, fire, fear, beauty, and the old madness men heard when a Targaryen spoke too softly. But the blood of Aegon the Conqueror moved in her, and in that blood lived fire, pride, and destruction.

Her hands closed around the sword’s hilt.

Cold bit her at once. Flesh blackened with frost where she touched it. The pain was clean and immense. She pulled anyway. The sword came free from the snow with a sound like breaking glass.

It was heavy, cracked, and colder than death. She did not care.

“Drogon. Rhaegal.”

Her voice rose across the field, high and raw, carrying all the grief she had not allowed herself to spend. “Fire. All of it. Give it to me.”

The dragons answered.
