ASOIAF/Game Of Thrones: Ruler of Batannia

Drogon and Rhaegal opened their jaws together. Neither had much strength left, which meant only that dragons, like men, are most dangerous when they have nothing sensible left to conserve. Their fire came in two great streams, red-gold and green-gold, poured not upon the Night King, but upon the cracked ice sword in Daenerys’s hands.

The flames swallowed her.

Men on the Wall cried out, then remembered, too late and uselessly, that Daenerys Targaryen had once walked from a funeral pyre with dragons upon her shoulders. Fire had never treated her as it treated other men. It wrapped around her now, fierce and living, whipping her hair back, turning the snow beneath her to steam. Her skin did not burn. The frost on her hands cracked and ran in rivulets that vanished before they touched the ground.

The sword changed.

Dragonfire sank into every fracture of the blade. Red and green light ran through the cracks like blood through veins. The ice did not simply melt. It held, impossible and unstable, cold and fire forced together by the blood of the dragon and the will of the Mother of Dragons. The blade began to hum. It was not a sound any sane smith would want to hear from a weapon. It sounded as if the sword meant to shatter, but intended to take the world’s patience with it.

Daenerys gripped it in both hands. The skin between her thumbs split. Her blood froze, then smoked away. Through the fire, through the dragons, through the blade, she felt a strange joining: herself, Drogon, Rhaegal, and the weapon stolen from winter. It was no neat magic, no maester’s diagram. It was raw, violent, temporary, and entirely unwilling to explain itself, which made it more honest than most powers men worshipped.

The Night King saw her.

The chaos in his blue eyes stilled. Pain had bent him, Arya had wounded him, Jon had broken his stride, and the five Sworn Men had bought the first crack in the moment. Now Daenerys came carrying his own sword remade by dragonfire, and for the faintest instant something passed through his face that was not rage.

It might have been fear.

It might only have been recognition.

Either was enough.

He tried to move. The ruined right arm dragged at him. The wound tore wider, black ice splintering along shoulder and ribs. He raised his left hand, summoning cold. It gathered, but too slowly. The field about him shuddered, unstable from the ruin in his arm and the dragonglass still buried there.

Daenerys ran.

No, not ran. The sword pulled her as much as she carried it. Dragonfire streamed behind her, and the blade’s light dragged red, green, and blue across the snow. Her silver hair flew wild around her face. In her violet eyes there was no throne, no crown, no city, no lord kneeling. There was only Viserion falling, Viserion rising, Jon frozen in the snow, Arya bleeding, the dead at the Wall, and the pale king who would make all living things his servants if no one ended him now.

“Night King!”

The cry tore from her throat.

He lifted his left hand to strike.

She reached him first.

The blade entered his chest with a dull sound, not loud, yet every living soul on the field seemed to feel it. It passed through the cracked armor and into the pulsing core beneath. There was no hard resistance, only a terrible yielding, as if she had thrust into ice that was melting and freezing and burning all at once.

Then the world came apart.

It was not fire exploding. It was not ice breaking. It was the two refusing to exist together inside the heart of the thing that had made itself king of winter. Dragonfire, death-ice, Valyrian blood, dragonglass-wounded cold, holy fire’s ruin, and the old stubborn will of the living all collapsed into one another at the point of the wound.

Light burst outward.

The Night King stiffened. His tall pale body became clear from within, every crack filling with red, green, blue, and black light. The cold fire in his eyes froze, flickered, and went out. He opened his mouth, perhaps to scream, perhaps to curse, perhaps to command the dead one final time. No sound came. Only breath, if it could be called breath, poured from the fractures in him: cold, ember, ash, and something vast and sorrowful, like a thousand trapped spirits released and erased in the same instant.

The clouds above split.

A blade of daylight pierced the night.

Under it, the Night King began to come apart.

The cracks spread from his chest across his throat, face, arms, and legs. Armor, flesh, magic, and whatever old will had held him together turned translucent, then brittle, then dust. He did not fall. He dissolved. Points of light lifted from him, mingled with ice crystals and dying sparks, and drifted into the winter air.

The sword in Daenerys’s hands shattered as he vanished. The blade broke into shining fragments. The hilt remained a moment longer, blackened, scorched, and rimed with frost, then split in her grip and fell away.

The Night King was gone.

No body. No crown. No blue eyes burning from the snow. Only a deep crater at Daenerys’s feet, its edges half glass, half frozen earth, and the cold daylight falling over it as if the world were not quite sure what it had witnessed.

For a long moment, the battlefield was silent.

Then the wights collapsed.

It began nearest the crater. Blue fire went out in their eyes, one after another, as if a wind had blown through unseen candles. Corpses fell in heaps, strings cut. Those climbing the Wall dropped away from the ice and struck the ground below. Others simply folded where they stood. White Walkers screamed once, not in command but bewilderment and pain, and then their pale bodies fractured, turning to dust and shards that scattered in the wind.

The tide of death withdrew without moving. It ceased.

The Wall stood.

Men stared. Some still held weapons raised toward enemies that no longer moved. Others looked down at their own hands, as if surprised to find them attached. A black brother began laughing and sobbing at once, a sound so unpleasantly human that several men nearby joined him. One of the Free Folk sat down in the snow and did not rise. A Northman made the sign of the old gods, realized that had no gesture, and settled for touching the ice.

Arthur Greyoak leaned against a merlon, sword lowered. His arms shook. The green light in the Wall faded beneath his boots, leaving only old ice and blood. Kator stood nearby, half-frozen, bleeding, and alive. Smith was laughing without humor. Denys Mallister looked toward Jon’s frozen shape in the distance and said nothing.

Daenerys stood at the edge of the crater with the broken hilt in her hand.

She had won.

The words meant nothing at first. Victory should have had a taste. Sweetness, perhaps, or triumph, or at least relief sharp enough to cut. Instead she felt hollow. Viserion was dead. Jon and Arya lay somewhere behind her, and she did not know whether they breathed. Stannis Baratheon had burned the last of himself away. Thousands lay scattered across the Wall and the field beneath it. Her hands were bloodied and frostbitten. Her dragons were wounded. The dawn had come, and it was grey.

She looked up at the thin strip of daylight. It looked cold. Real, but cold.

So this was victory.

The singers had lied.
